Guru Amar Das Ji heard the sound of the persianwheel
working. (The old method of drawing water from the
well with the help of the persian-wheel having earthen or
metallic pots.) He felt even the persian-wheel uttering – ‘thou!
thou!’ meaning thereby that due to total harmony between
the mind and the holy Word, the sound of Divine Name
meditation is heard even from insentient objects.
When the birds twitter, particularly the sparrow-hawk,
great joy is felt, if you start hearing the sound of ‘Waheguru’,
‘Waheguru’ from their speech. Hearing the holy Word in this
manner is not something impossible or rare. It is only a matter
of absorption in the Name Divine that is required :
Jo bolat hai marig meen pankhayroo
so bin Har jaapat hai nahee hor.
‘Whatever the deer, the fish and the birds utter; without
God they speak not of another.’ (S.G.G.S. P. 1265)
If you are travelling in a bus, attune your mind with
its hissing and whirling sounds and practise Divine Name
meditation. If you are travelling in a train, you will hear God’s
Name in its rumbling sound. If you are riding a bicycle, attune
your mind with the pedal. This means that you have to try to
hear God’s Name in every physical action your body is engaged
in. If you are going on foot, harmonize your Name meditation
with the movement of your steps. The objective of all these
efforts is to practise Divine Name meditation, to recite the
Name with every breath and with every particle of the body.
Divine Name meditation, practised in the ambrosial
early hours of the morning stands you in good stead
throughout the day. Divine Name meditation should be
practised in the early morning daily without breaking the
routine. It should be done not off and on but every day. If you
miss on occasions, concentration is broken and no spiritual
gain will accrue to you. Divine Name meditation practised
regularly at an appointed time and place bears fruit soon.
The mind gains poise spontaneously. At no time of the day
other than early morning hours can you get real solitude. At
this time, there is perfect peace in the environment. Initially,
it is absolutely necessary to practise Divine Name meditation
in a peaceful environment. Divine Name meditation
practitioners all over the world are busy practising meditation
at this hour. Divine Name vibrations from all of them spread
in the entire cosmos; they are reaching that place too where
you are engaged in Name meditation. Due to this, the mind
spontaneously gets absorbed in the holy Word.
Solitude of a level lower than that of the early morning
can be enjoyed outside habitations, on the bank of a lake or a
river, in some garden or wild forest, on sand dunes or
mountain tops and caves. Our religion is house holderoriented.
Therefore, we can enjoy this kind of solitude for
some time all right, but we cannot leave our homes and
hearths for good and repair to these places for practising
Divine Name meditation. Many times, even in solitude, the
diffusion of mind is very painful. The thing which is dearest
to you in worldly terms, or which has influenced or captured
your mind most, occurs to your mind again and again, but
owing to our love and attachment for God, in solitude it will
soon become absorbed in Divine Name contemplation.
Meditation will start in the mind spontaneously. Seeing the
scenes and sights of nature around us, the mind automatically
gets absorbed in remembering the Lord Creator. In this
manner, Divine Name meditation is done with concentration
of mind and is full of joy and relish. The devotee attains a
state of bliss, when :
Bhinnee rainrhee-ai chaamkan taaray.
Jaageh sant janaa mayray Raam pi-aaray.(S.G.G.S. P.459)
‘In the dew-drenched night shine the stars.
The holy, those beloved of God, at this hour are awake.’
At night, while going to sleep and in the early
ambrosial morning, if we cast a glance at the star-studded
sky, the coolness of the gently and sweetly shining moon
touches our eyes and the beautiful, charming and vast aspect
of God comes to be seen. We have a manifest glimpse of the
