Nevertheless, in all portfolios,only the “life-style” products offered by HSBC haveless than 0.5 percent of their total portfolio in bondsor stocks of Lehman Brothers, and none in mini-bonds.Regarding the gain or loss recorded by individualportfolios, colleagues are advised to check with theirinvestment managers. You can also visit the FinanceOffice website (http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/~fohome/internal/supn2.htm) to check the portfolios’ performance.Mr. Andy Lee李 兆 銓 先 生Q: Is the Mandatory Provident Fund(MPF) scheme affected?The extent that the MPF is affected varies amongindividual investment portfolios. Nevertheless, noproduct in the MPF schemes is related to four of themain financial institutions in crisis, namely AIG, MerrillLynch, Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual.Q: I will be retiring in a few months.Am I required to liquidate myinvestment holdings in the Fund?Colleagues can choose to continue their investmentafter retirement. What they have to do is to open apersonal account with their investment managers andtransfer the investment holdings to it. For details,please refer to the Finance Office website (http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/~fohome/internal/supn.htm) or theSuperannuation Fund Member’s Handbook - SupplementSheet 1/04.Retiring staff are always advised to startchanging their investment choices to profiles oflower risk a few years ahead of their retirementso as to minimise any loss resulting from stockmarket volatility.Q: Will the salary adjustment nextyear be affected?Given the global impact of the financial crisis, it isunavoidable that the University will be affected.However, since our financial management strategyis always prudent, holistic and with a long-termorientation, our financial strength will not besignificantly affected in the long run.In determining any “generaladjustment” to salary, the Council willtake into consideration factorsincluding the market pay levels,the pay adjustment for civil servants,adjustments in the cost of living,the financial viability of theUniversity and staff morale.In addition, according tothe New Pay and Reward Structure,Faculties/Schools/Offices willdecide on any salary adjustmentbased on staff performance, the fundingsituation, external comparability andinternal relativity. It was the first overseas trip for both ofthem. We visited the Chicago Children’s Museum, theWisconsin Dells, the Science and Industry Museum, theNavy Pier and many other places. The whole trip was wonderful except that my walletand mobile phone were stolen in France. It’s delightful towalk along the canal bank to enjoy its peace andelegance. When I visited there in day time, severalartists showed their works to me. I bought some ofthem. The canal also reminds me of scenes fromJapanese dramas. We served at the Beijing Games!服 務 京 奧 你 我 做 得 到 !Even after the Beijing Olympics and Paralympicscame to a glorious close, Olympics fever was stillvery much in evidence on the HKBU campus. On22 September staff and students who served atthe Games gathered together at a party to showappreciation for their effort and dedication.Altogether nearly 300 staff and studentsserved in a wide variety of capacities at theGames. Speaking at the party, Prof. Ng Chingfai,President and Vice-Chancellor, said: “TheHKBU community has played many differentroles at the Beijing Games. I am glad that we havemade such a significant contribution to theGames, which all Chinese were so proud of.”Proud indeed. Examining the kitchens of the three designated hotels,she and her team had the task of ensuring the hygiene and safety of thefood consumed by the Olympic athletes and working teams.Despite the hard work, Beth said she has gained a lot from herexperience. “I’ve acquired new knowledge and made new friends.“To give is better than to receive. Their exciting trip did notstart smoothly, as Typhoon Signal 8 was hoisted on the day of their departure.Yet nothing could dampen their enthusiasm and their determinism, especially as theywere the only student reporter team from a Hong Kong university. As the elected leader of the 29-strong Hong Kong volunteer teamat the Beijing Shooting Range Hall, she took good care of her team members,particularly as she was told that the services of every one of them wasneeded despite the tough conditions.“The Hong Kong team played an important role at the Hall due toour language ability.” When some members showed symptoms of heatstroke after standing for long hours in the sun, she bought up all the herbaltea at the nearby supermarket to refresh her team.Her devotion and hard work paid off. In May1966, the first Hong Kong Baptist College permanent campus at WaterlooRoad was completed, named the Ho Sin Hang Campus in 1996.Today, the University has three closely-knit campuses: the Ho SinHang Campus, the Shaw Campus and the Hong Kong Baptist UniversityRoad Campus; and also Shek Mun and Kai Tak campuses. But that unlikelyscenario became reality on 26 September with the opening ofthe Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC). Officiated byMr. Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, the excitingand innovative project is led by HKBU with Hong KongArts Development Council and Hong Kong Arts Centreas strategic partners.Blessed with a generous donation of HK$94.4 millionfrom The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust towardsthe renovation and part of the start-up costs, the Centrehas the full support of the Home Affairs Bureau of the HKSARGovernment.The JCCAC is a Hong Kong first: an arts centre converted from adecommissioned factory building. This vibrant hub of creativity and culturalinteraction is open throughout the year to the public.
