It takestechnique, concentration, skill and speed.Swimming is an intense sport that doesn’tstop for anything. What some people don’t realize isthat we do more than just hop in a pooland swim around. Swimmers do dryland, conditioning both on land and in thewater, to reach maximum potential. Theschool found the swim team so impressivethat they built them an amazing newaquatic center. Runners, where’s yournew track? Nonexistent. While runners go in a pack, swimmerstend to go at all different timesduring meets. While some say this is adetriment to a team, it has brought manyof the members closer together, cheeringeachother on til the end.One of the best bonuses of beinga swimmer is the constant perfume ofchlorine. Runners get to smell like sweat.Sure, runners do cardio, but swimmersdo cardio while holding their breath.X & YY Side- RunningDallas ElmoreRunning: The most primal movementin the human condition. Humansoriginally became the dominant speciesnot because they were the strongest orthe fastest or could swim a chlorinatedpool, but because they could run theirprey into sheer exhaustion and then eat itover a prehistoric fire. I have never seena swimmer do more than splash. The freedom of movement thatrunning allows is our first great step ofindependence, when we first start to runaway from our parents. Swimmerswear goggles for eye protection.Runners support each other whenrunning, the bonds of a running groupspilling over into regular life. You cansee, push, and surpass your opponent inrain, snow, sleet or shine, knowing thatevery step you take in front of them isyour own doing, and not the work of ascientifically engineered suit.Don’t wake me if I’m dreamingIn an attempt to avoidseeming shallow whenit comes to dating, peopleoften claim that they arelooking for a partner withintelligence rather thangood looks. This may soundlike the “right thing to do,”however, to me it seems likeit is just trading one type ofsuperficiality for another.Sure, smarts havetheir benefits, but I do notbelieve that their valueoutweighs an attractiveappearance. Instead ofinitiating attraction basedon one of these factors, Ibelieve that an individual’spersonality should be themain component. In a school likeours, there is opportunityeverywhere. We have the opportunityto take differenttypes of challengingmath and sciencecourses. We also have the opportunity totake classes that appeal to our special interestssuch as a foreign language, programmingor marketing. Not only do we haveopportunity in our academic courses, butalso in the types of clubs offered to us andsports that we can try out for. With all of these ways to get involved, students have no excuse for not participatingin activities during their high schoolcareer.
