Sports Page 6A&M secession creates conundrumDallas ElmoreReporter<strong>The</strong> conference that seemed to have stablilized after the Nebraskacrisis of 2010 now stands on the verge of collapse after oneof its biggest members seceded to the SEC.On Sept. 31, Texas A&M announced it was leaving the Big12 conference in a release from its website. <strong>The</strong> schools stirringsof secession began when its biggest rival, Texas, created its ownTV station, the Longhorn network. Other members of the conferencegrumbled, but no major actions were expected until the Aggiesleft in a short huff.Now, the remaining member schools have to sift through thewreckage to figure out what the future of their conference will be.<strong>The</strong> University of Oklahoma and Texas are rumored to be headedto the Pac-12, while Missourri and Kansas could be headed to theBig Ten. Whatever the case may be, a nine member Big 12 is nota feasible option for the major schools in the conference.However, there is hope for the foundering athletic group.Navy or Air Force, which had been flirting with leaving theirconferences, may join and become the tenth man, or perhapsBrigham Young University. Both schools provide major sportsheritage with major football prowess. But the question ultimatelycomes down to wether or not the current member conference wantto keep together the sinking ship of the Big 12. <strong>The</strong> Big Ten andPac-12, or even the SEC, are rumored to be willing to accept theBig 12 schools that break away from their current conference.Ultimately, the schools will decide to leave or stay basedupon their own well-being instead of the conference’s.MLB brings excitement to OctoberCam ThomasCopy Editor<strong>The</strong> baseball season is finally drawing to a close. With springtraining beginning in April, the final regular season game willtake place on Sep. 28. All 30 teams, 16 National League and 14American League, have played 162 games. Many consider thisschedule to be the most gruelling in sports.Autumn represents an exciting time for Major League Baseball,it signifies the beginning of the playoffs. <strong>The</strong> winners ofeach division will head into the postseason along with one wildcard team from the American League and one wild card teamfrom the National League. Only the eight best teams qualify forthe playoffs.<strong>The</strong> playoffs open with the Division Series. This best-of-fiveseries usually pits the wild card team against the team with thebest overall record. Two teams advance from each Division Seriesto the League Championship Series. <strong>The</strong> League Championshipseries is a best-of-seven series. <strong>The</strong> winner of the ALCS isawarded the American League pennant, while the winner of theNLCS is crowned with the National League pennant. <strong>The</strong> twowinners advance to the World Series.<strong>The</strong> World Series is also a best-of-seven series. <strong>The</strong> winnerof the All-Star game earns their league homefield advantagethroughout the World Series. <strong>The</strong> 2011 All-Star Game took placeat Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in Phoenix,Arizona. <strong>The</strong> National League took the game five to one. <strong>The</strong>refore,the National League Champion will host games one, two,Volleyball has just begunCam ThomasCopy Editor<strong>The</strong> volleyball season is now in full swing. <strong>The</strong> varsity team,junior varsity, and 9th grade teams have all begun their seasons.<strong>The</strong> varsity girls have a win-loss record of 7-16. <strong>The</strong> teamfeatures seniors Natalie Colclausre, Olivia Bersin, Kate Guest,Rachel Leonard, and Marquishia Washington. <strong>The</strong> team openedthe season with a win against rival Broken Arrow, even startingthe season 3-1. However, some tough losses against their rivals hashampered the team’s record. However, their record is not indicativeof the team’s spirit.<strong>The</strong> team played tough against Norman North in their latestgame on Sept. 16, but came up just short, losing 3-0. <strong>The</strong> matchwas tough on the team, but a few different shots could havechanged the score drastically.All home volleyball games are played at the Frank HeraldGym. <strong>The</strong> varsity volleyball team has three home games remaining:Sand Springs on Sept. 29, Edmond Memorial on Sept. 30, andrival Union on Oct. 4. All of the team’s remaining home gameswill be played at 6:30 p.m.Edmond North is in first place in the varsity volleyball standingswith a record of 19-2. <strong>The</strong> Trojans have faced Edmond Northonce this year and lost the match 3-0.Once the regular season is complete, the regional tournamentwill take place on Oct. 6, with time and location to be announcedat a later date. <strong>The</strong> state tournament will take place after regionalsfrom Oct. 14-15, also with date and location to be announced.Although the varsity volleyball season has not been goingwell so far, hopefully they can bounce back in their final games.six, and seven. <strong>The</strong> All-Star Game has only decided home fieldadvantage in the World Series since 2003, prior to that home fieldadvantage was alternated between the American League and theNational League.<strong>The</strong> favorites to represent the American League in the WorldSeries looks to be the New York Yankees, while the early NationalLeague favorite looks to be the Philadelphia Phillies.<strong>The</strong> Phillies field the best pitching staff in the majors. WithCliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, Roy Oswalt, and rookieVance Worley, their pitching is unstoppable.<strong>The</strong> Bronx Bombers bring a highpowered offense to the table.With Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter the Yankeeslook to put runs on the board.No matter who plays, fans will find the World Series exciting.
X & YX Side- SwimmingAnnie RoachAnyone can run. Seriously, anyone.But swimming is not so simple. It takestechnique, concentration, skill and speed.Swimming is an intense sport that doesn’tstop for anything.What some people don’t realize isthat we do more than just hop in a pooland swim around. Swimmers do dryland, conditioning both on land and in thewater, to reach maximum potential. <strong>The</strong>school found the swim team so impressivethat they built them an amazing newaquatic center. Runners, where’s yournew track? Nonexistent.While runners go in a pack, swimmerstend to go at all different timesduring meets. While some say this is adetriment to a team, it has brought manyof the members closer together, cheeringeachother on til the end.One of the best bonuses of beinga swimmer is the constant perfume ofchlorine. Runners get to smell like sweat.Sure, runners do cardio, but swimmersdo cardio while holding their breath.X & YY Side- RunningDallas ElmoreRunning: <strong>The</strong> most primal movementin the human condition. Humansoriginally became the dominant speciesnot because they were the strongest orthe fastest or could swim a chlorinatedpool, but because they could run theirprey into sheer exhaustion and then eat itover a prehistoric fire. I have never seena swimmer do more than splash.<strong>The</strong> freedom of movement thatrunning allows is our first great step ofindependence, when we first start to runaway from our parents. Soon we can runfaster, harder, stronger, than our parents,reminding them who is boss. Swimmerswear goggles for eye protection.Runners support each other whenrunning, the bonds of a running groupspilling over into regular life. You cansee, push, and surpass your opponent inrain, snow, sleet or shine, knowing thatevery step you take in front of them isyour own doing, and not the work of ascientifically engineered suit.Don’t wake me if I’m dreamingIn an attempt to avoidseeming shallow whenit comes to dating, peopleoften claim that they arelooking for a partner withintelligence rather thangood looks. This may soundlike the “right thing to do,”however, to me it seems likeit is just trading one type ofsuperficiality for another.Sure, smarts havetheir benefits, but I do notbelieve that their valueoutweighs an attractiveappearance. Instead ofinitiating attraction basedon one of these factors, Ibelieve that an individual’spersonality should be themain component.In a school likeours, there is opportunityeverywhere.We have the opportunityto take differenttypes of challengingmath and sciencecourses. We also have the opportunity totake classes that appeal to our special interestssuch as a foreign language, programmingor marketing. Not only do we haveopportunity in our academic courses, butalso in the types of clubs offered to us andsports that we can try out for.With all of these ways to get involved,students have no excuse for not participatingin activities during their high schoolcareer.
