You are joining some <strong>of</strong>the most talented young musicians and finest faculty in the world! Your time here shouldbe filled with experiences that enhance your musical talents, while meeting musicianswho will become lifelong mentors, friends, and collaborators. The 2013 Orientation hasbeen planned to assist you with your transition to both <strong>Manhattan</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> andNew York City.Please read the entirety <strong>of</strong> this <strong>letter</strong>, as it contains important in<strong>for</strong>mation regardingmove-in day and beginning your studies at <strong>MSM</strong>.Check-in Schedule <strong>for</strong> Residents and CommutersAll <strong>new</strong> <strong>students</strong> will participate in a Welcome, Orientation, and Check-in Processstarting Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 8am.RESIDENTSStudents living in Andersen Hall, referred to as “residents” or “resident <strong>students</strong>,” checkin on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, from 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. at Ades per<strong>for</strong>manceSpace. Staff from <strong>of</strong>fices such as Student Life, Residence Life, Student Accounts,Financial Aid, Admissions, and the Registrar will be there to ensure you have completedall documentation required <strong>of</strong> each <strong>new</strong> student. Once you have met with the <strong>of</strong>fices inAdes Per<strong>for</strong>mance Space, you will proceed to check-in at the residence hall. TheAndersen Hall staff will be present to welcome you and <strong>of</strong>ficially check you in. It is inyour best interest to arrive as early as possible on the 28 th . Arriving earlier than the timelisted below <strong>for</strong> your assigned floor is okay, however arriving later than 12:00pm isstrongly discouraged. COMMUTERSStudents living <strong>of</strong>f campus are referred to as “commuters” or “commuter <strong>students</strong>.” NewUndergraduate and Graduate <strong>students</strong> who are commuters will also check in from 8:00a.m.-1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 28, 2013, in Ades Per<strong>for</strong>mance Space. It is veryimportant that commuter <strong>students</strong> make arrangements to participate in orientation events,even if the event is taking place in Andersen Hall. Commuters will complete the checkinprocess in Ades to receive an <strong>MSM</strong> ID and ensure that all paperwork is complete.There will be an opportunity <strong>for</strong> all commuter <strong>students</strong> to meet each other on the evening<strong>of</strong> August 28 th .Late ArrivalsIf you are arriving after August 28, 2013, you must receive approval from Elsa JeanDavidson, Dean <strong>of</strong> Students. She can be reached at ejdavidson@msmnyc.edu. Studentsarriving after August 28 th will check in at the front entrance <strong>of</strong> the school building locatedon 122 nd street near the corner <strong>of</strong> Broadway. In addition to checking in at the <strong>School</strong>, lateresidents will check in to the residence hall with the RA on duty. Students arriving lateare asked to be very patient with the check in process as staff will be participating inOrientation events.OrientationThe 2013 Orientation will take place from August 28–September 10, 2013, and willprovide you with numerous opportunities to feel welcomed into the <strong>Manhattan</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Music</strong> community. We have tried to design events and meetings specifically <strong>for</strong> both theundergraduate and graduate student. It is our hope that by participating in the 2013Orientation events, you will have many opportunities to become familiar with your peers,staff, faculty, the <strong>School</strong>, and the New York City area. As the Orientation scheduleshows, you will spend time getting to know people from the <strong>Manhattan</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong>community, as well as participating in placement exams, auditions, and criticalin<strong>for</strong>mation sessions. You will also have numerous social activities such as dinnersaround town, trips to Broadway shows, and a boat cruise around the island <strong>of</strong> <strong>Manhattan</strong>.All <strong>of</strong> these events are set up to make you feel more at home here.Friends and Family WeekendThe 2013 Friends and Family Weekend is a great opportunity to invite your friends andfamily to see <strong>MSM</strong> and to join you in the city <strong>for</strong> a pleasant and exciting weekend. Theevent takes place October 17–20, 2013. There will be opportunities <strong>for</strong> you, yourfamilies, and your friends to meet with faculty and staff, sit in on classes, and attenddifferent events in the city. Details and sign up in<strong>for</strong>mation will be available in late Julyhere: http://www.msmnyc.edu/Offices/Student-Life/Family-Friends-WeekendGuestsWe encourage all parents and guardians to return home after dinner on the first day o<strong>for</strong>ientation. This is so all the <strong>students</strong> can begin getting to know one another and startdeveloping friendships. Please note that guests are not allowed to stay overnight in
