www.carrickfergus.orgTREES LOVE CAREThousands of young trees, planted with care and expense, die each year from the lack of just a few minutes of TLC.That’s why Carrickfergus Borough Council in conjunction with conservation charity the Tree Council is urging everyonewho has planted trees in the last five years to revisit them at least once a year and give them the tender loving carethey so desperately need. Here are a few simple tips for TLC — Tending, such as checking guards and carrying out essential pruning, Loosening ofties and checking stakes, and Clearing grass and weeds from around the tree’s base and applying mulches.Stephen Daye, Environmental Services Officer said "Trees matter, so cherish them by giving them a few minutes of annualcare to help them survive those crucial early years and grow to maturity. That’s the message we want to get across in2004. Research suggests that at least one in three of all young trees die from lack of care within their first five years. Insome planting projects, the loss is over 90 per cent. That means a lot of time, money and effort are wasted. Yetthis worrying situation could be changed simply by giving all young trees a little TLC"."There are many reasons why trees matter and why we are encouraging everybody to not only plant trees, but also maintainthe ones we have. Trees provide an aesthetically pleasant environment, urban forests can cheaply and easily improve airquality and biodiversity, lessen soil erosion and flood damage and improve community spirit, health and fitness. Trees filterout levels of ambient pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide by up to 45%. The cool and shade that theRECYCLING PILOTGETS UNDER WAYResidents within the Borough will soon be recycling in arevolutionary scheme being implemented by CarrickfergusBorough Council and in partnership with the local charityBryson House, in order to save tonnes of waste beingneedlessly dumped in Northern Ireland’s landfill sites.Householders are being offered the best possible recyclingservice, enabling eight different materials to be recycled;newspapers and magazines, glass bottles and jars, food anddrinks cans, old clothes, plastic bottles, aerosols, aluminiumfoil and old hand tools. Each household will be issued witha special box – made from recycled plastic bottles – inwhich to put the materials. Weekly collections will be madefrom households using four specially designed vehicles,The key to the success of the programme in Carrickferguswill be the way people respond to the service.Carrickfergus Borough Council and Bryson House are keento stress that everything being collected will be recycled, and that recycling uses about half the energy to reprocessitems, compared to making them from new material. It alsocuts down on wasteful landfill sites and provides theopportunity for sustainable jobs.6
