And,MHCC participates in a powerfulway to both recognize and leverageacademic achievement into aninvestment in the next levels ofhigher education: Rho Theta.Rho Theta is the MHCC chapterof Phi Theta Kappa, the internationalhonor society of two-yearcolleges, and the largest honorsociety in America. Membership inRho Theta is by invitation only, forstudents who meet several requirementsincluding a 3.5 or highergrade point average.“Membership hasopened so manydoors for me.”At MHCC, 280 students joined theorganization in 2010. The entireCollege is proud of Rho Theta’saccomplishments: They wererecently name first runner-up asthe Most Distinguished Chapter– internationally. And if you thinkhonor society membership is justa pat on the back for these highachievingstudents, keep in mindthat more than 700 four-yearcolleges and universities offer someNation’s Largest Honor SocietyRho Theta Leaders Onjalai Flake and Beth Sammons$37 million in transfer scholarshipsto Phi Theta Kappa members, andthe honor society itself awards$130,000 in student support.“Rho Theta is much more thanpeople realize,” says Onjalai Flake,an MHCC student and a Phi ThetaKappa International vice president.“This is an investment in yourfuture. Membership has openedso many doors for me. It’s been anamazing opportunity for growth, leadership and service.”Flake, whose plans aftergraduation from MHCC involvecommunications studies at GeorgeFox University, serves as a studentambassador for the honor societyand also worked on Phi ThetaKappa’s national initiative toincrease college completion rates.“I would have never pictured myselfin this role,” she says. “I’m sure themany benefits of Rho Theta come asa surprise to most MHCC students, from the generous scholarships tosimply being part of a culture that’sbased on wanting to know andunderstand new things. This year, weare learning about where our clothescome from, and what that means forthe countries and the workers whomake them. We don’t do it for credit—becausethere isn’t any—we do itbecause it’s important.”Beth Sammons, MHCC instructorand Rho Theta’s adviser, agrees:“These students aren’t just highachieversin their courses,” she says,“they are developing as the leaderswho will help us address the nationaland global challenges we face and theopportunities that go with them.”Sammons has done some highachieving of her own recently, becoming one of only 25 Phi ThetaKappa faculty scholars selected frommore than 1,250 chapters nationwideto serve as discussion leaders atthe International Honors Institute.“If you’re accomplished enough tobe invited to join Rho Theta—do it,”Flake urges the MHCC student community.“You will have access to somany educational and career resources, from scholarships to networking.3Mt. Hood Community College

Moving the College ForwardDr. Ski and Larry Collins-Morgan with MHCC Student Government Leadersnumbers of people of all ages andbackgrounds. I see the Collegebecoming a real leader in servingour growing diverse communitiesby expanding “distance learning”opportunities and implementingother new education deliverymethods. I also see an expandingnumber of “green” partnershipswith business, putting MHCC in therole of an environmental leader.Q]What advice would you giveto current MHCC students?Dr. Ski: Never give up on yourdreams. MHCC has opportunityaround every corner, and whereveryou want to go, you can get therefrom here. And I would also saytake advantage of all the supportand services you’ll find on the campuses—caring, inspiring and dedicatedadvisers, counselors, facultyand tutors.Q]What do you think of thework student governmenthas done?Dr. Ski: I give great kudos to thestudent government leadershipand Larry Collins-Morgan,president, and his leadershipteam. I, and the collegecommunity in general, includingour College Board members, have been very impressedwith this student governmentleadership team. From theirefforts to engage the board, administration and staff invarious discussions, to increasingcommunications through socialmedia, to finding effective waysto keep students engaged withcampus developments and issues,to their very successful efforts toimprove campus safety, they haveshown that student governmentis a relevant force for change andimprovement.Q]If you could make one changeto MHCC, what would it be?Dr. Ski: Wow…how about abrand new campus and abillion-dollar endowment? Butseriously, if I could make onechange it would be to have ourentire community really understandand fully appreciate theincredible value of the educationand training this College providesto everyone in the community, and that we get only 23 percentof our funding from the state. Justabout everyone associated withMHCC changes lives and destinies. The value we provide has tobe powered by our generoussupporters, from money for scholarshipsand great teachers, to thefacilities that provide a learningenvironment. For MHCC to thriveand to accomplish its mission, everyone has to play a role andtake on part of the responsibility. What better way to recognize Dr. Ski for his many contributions to MHCC than to make a donation to a scholarship in his name? For information or to make a donation, please contact the MHCC Foundation at 503-491-7206 or mhcc.edu/foundation.22

PERIODICALSPOSTAL CUSTOMERECRWSSPhoto by Tanja OlsonHow One Couple Planned forthe Future – Theirs and MHCC’sWhen Larry and Mary Zoe Petersen decided toinvest their money, they weren’t just thinkingabout their own future – they were also thinkingabout the many students who attend MHCC andwork hard to build better lives for themselves. After 30 years as owner and operator of GreshamOptical, the Petersens decided a few years agothat it was time to sell their business and retire. However, selling their business would incur a largetax liability, so they set up a charitable gift annuitythrough the MHCC Foundation. The results are a resounding win-win. Thanksto their investment in an annuity, the Petersensreceive monthly income for life, a charitable taxdeduction and provide a lasting legacy that willhelp more students achieve their dreams.“I was concerned when I heard the number onereason students with children don’t complete theireducation is because of child care issues,” said MaryZoe, who is a longtime member of the MHCC FoundationBoard. “I believe education is the key to success, and I hope this money will make it possible formore people to finish school.”Larry & Mary Zoe PetersenCharitable gift annuities are a great way to planfor your future and, at the same time, benefitthe College. Here’s how they work: You agree todonate a particular asset or sum of money, andin exchange, the Foundation agrees to provide aguaranteed income stream, depending on your age,to you and/or your loved ones for life. For more information, or to learn how you can putdreams within reach for students in our community, please visit mhcc.edu/foundation, or email usat give@mhcc.edu or call us at 503-491-7204.Thank You to the Petersens – and to YOU – For Your Support of the MHCC Foundation! This schedule is published to provide information to the general public.
