THE E - CLASS | 03Summing up Mercedes - Benz in one letterThe E - Class : epitomising what makes a MercedesThe letter E – a synonym for comfort, safety andelegance for over 60 years. The current E - Classcontinues this tradition. With a wide range ofengines, the driving experience is as dynamic asever – while fuel consumption and emissions areas low as never before. BlueTEC is a technologyspecially developed by Mercedes - Benz to reducediesel emissions, making the compression - ignitionengine one of the cleanest and most efficientpowerplants in the world. The E 350 CGI, with its direct - injection 6 - cylinderpetrol engine, boasts a reduced fuel consumptionand near - complete, lower - pollutantcombustion. These excellent ecological and economicalcredentials ease the burden both on theenvironment and on your wallet. The high standardof comfort in the E - Class enhances driving enjoymentand combines with attractive design featuresand colours to produce the typical feeling ofwellbeing you can expect of a Mercedes. And foreven more security the specification includesPRE - SAFE , the anticipatory safety system.Make headway more dynamically, more efficientlyand in greater comfort – the E - Classstands for everything that makes a Mercedes

The E - Class

SafetyWe’ve been developing the future of safety for 60 yearsMercedes - Benz milestonesBéla Barényi – seen here with a safety prototype – is the acknowledged fatherof passive safety engineering. His name appears on the Mercedes - Benzpatents for the passenger safety cell with crumple zones and the safetysteering column.Since then Mercedes - Benz has time and again proved a pioneer in thefield of safety. In 1978 it was a Mercedes - Benz that helped put ABS on themap, and just three years later airbags and belt tensioners made theirdebut in a standard - production vehicle. The list goes on – from the introductionof ESP to PRE - SAFE .Throughout, Mercedes - Benz has doggedly been pursuing one goal : thevision of accident - free driving. It will be a while before this vision becomesreality, but with the integrated safety concept of Mercedes - Benz the goalhas moved a step closer to fulfilment.Béla Barényi – seen herewith a safety prototype – isthe acknowledged father ofpassive safety engineering. His name appears on theMercedes - Benz patents forthe passenger safety cellwith crumple zones and thesafety steering column

14 | SAFETY | Integrated safety conceptA comprehensive approach to safetyThe safety philosophy of Mercedes - BenzRather than drawing a distinction between activeand passive safety, the integrated safety conceptcombines both types of safety system into aforward - looking integrated Mercedes - Benz safetyphilosophy. Our approach to safety at Mercedes -Benz doesn’t just extend from ABS to ESP – itextends from A to Z.The standard of comfort on board makesthe driver’s job easier, while assistance systemspermanently monitor the driving situation. If certain dangers arise, the driver can be warnedand assisted. As a precaution, reversible protective measurescan take effect, providing the required protectionfor the occupants in the event of an accident.Once an accident occurs, specific measures canhelp prevent anything worse from happening, reducing, for example, the likelihood of secondaryaccidents. As you can see, at Mercedes - Benz we takea comprehensive, joined - up approach to safety. And this approach forms the heart of the integratedsafety concept of Mercedes - Benz.Safe drivingOne of many safety systemswhose purpose is to anticipateand prevent dangeroussituations before theydevelop is DISTRONIC proximitycontrol, which helpsyou to keep the requireddistance from the vehiclein front in the 30 km / h to180 km / h speed range

In an accidentIn 1959 we developed the world’sfirst passenger safety cell.Today we are still building oneof the sturdiest passengercells around : the E - ClassAfter an accidentThe E - Class goes on providingpro tection even if an accidentcuts the journey short. Forexample with features whichhelp to speed and facilitateoccupant rescueIn the event of dangerSome hazards can appear without warning. But there are safetysystems that are even faster. Like the reversible belt tensioners

SAFETY | Integrated safety concept | 17Ready for the unexpectedDrive safely, and prevent accidents before they happenAdaptive brake lightsThe flashing brake lightis activated on emergencybraking from a speed of over50 km / h, warning followingtraffic and allowing otherdrivers to react earlierImproving road safety involves the use of activesafety features like the control and display conceptwhich minimises distractions from what is happeningon the road. Then there are systems whichprovide support in critical situations and alert thedriver to potential hazards – like the ADAPTIVEBRAKE system, which includes a HOLD functionthat prevents the vehicle rolling away whenstopped on a hill, a brake - drying function forwet - weather driving and adaptive brake lights. If the driver initiates emergency braking froma speed over 70 km / h, the adaptive brake lightsflash to alert following traffic and the hazardwarning lights are activated when the vehiclecomes to a standstill. The headlamps, too, offer innovative technology. The optional Intelligent Light System, based onthe bi - xenon headlamps with the active light functionand cornering light function, automaticallyadapts the low - beam lights to the given drivingsituation. The system provides broader illuminationof the road on extra - urban roads and improveslong - range visibility by up to 50 metres on motorways. This means obstacles can be spotted sooner, and driving style adapted accordingly. TheIntelligent Light System also includes enhancedfog lamps, which significantly improve illuminationof the driver’s side of the road and LED - enhanced, brighter side lights.PRE - SAFE includes systems which, dependingon the on - road situation and the on - board equipment, are able to anticipate hazards and takeprecautionary measures. They include reversiblebelt tensioners and automatic closure of theside windows and of the optional tilting / slidingsunroof.Motorway mode25m0-2525m0-250 50 100 150 200mCountry road modeIntelligent Light SystemFrom a road speed of90 km / h, the motorwaymode is switched on in twostages, allowing the driverto see up to 60 percentfurther than with conventionallow beams, while thenew country road mode providesextended illuminationof the edge of the road onthe driver’s sideLow beamLow beam0 50 100 150 200m

18 | SAFETY | Integrated safety conceptWe hope this is the only time you’ll ever see these safety featuresRestraint systems and a passenger safety cell designed to protect you and others if the worst should happenThe E - Class contains a wide range of safetysystems designed to prevent accidents. Should anaccident nevertheless be unavoidable, the occupantprotection systems can significantly reducethe risk of injury. These offer protection bothfor your own vehicle and for other road users.Protection for your own vehicle includes a high -strength safety cell and systems such as the two -stage adaptive front airbags, the sidebags andwindowbags, and the crash - responsive NECK - PROhead restraints for the driver and front passengerseats. In the event of a rear - end impact of a givenseverity, pretensioned springs push the headrestraints on the driver and front passenger seatsforward by around 40 mm and upward by around30 mm in a fraction of a second. This braces theheads of the front seat occupants sooner, thusreducing the risk of whiplash injury. The smoothbodywork and strategically yielding bumpersare among the features which help protect otherroad users.Depending on the type and severity of an accident, various measures may be triggered to helpto prevent the situation from deteriorating andto aid the rescue of the occupants : the engineand fuel supply are automatically switched off aftera serious collision, for example, and the fuel tankis situated in the protected area in front of therear axle. To make it easier to locate the vehicleconcerned, the hazard warning lights are activatedautomatically. Doors which unlock automaticallyand are easy to open mean that occupants can berescued more quickly after an accident.Another safety measure provided by Mercedes -Benz is the multi - language rescue manual whichis available on the internet to rescue servicesworldwide at :www.mercedes - benz.com / rescue - guidelinesFurther information about the Mercedes - Benz safety concept is availableonline at www.mercedes - benz.com / airbag - brochureNECK - PRO head restraintsThe NECK - PRO head restraintsare sensor - controlled. Afterdeployment, they can be returnedto their original position by hand

SAFETY | E - GUARD | 19E - Guard – a realistic alternative to guardian angels“Integrated Protection” for personal securityIt’s around 80 years now since we developedthe first Mercedes - Benz with special protection, based on the Nürburg model. It marked the beginningsof our “Integrated Protection” principle. The factory - fitted integrated protection system isa feature of every Mercedes - Benz Guard 1 model. The passenger cell is radically redesigned andstrengthened using highly effective protectivecomponents – particularly at those points whichare no longer properly accessible after this productionstage. Virtually inconspicuous from theoutside, this ingenious safety structure is integratedex factory and includes high - strengthsteel, aramid and special - purpose glass. It goes without saying that all of the electroniccontrol systems, the brakes and the suspension ofthe E - Guard models are adapted to the additionalweight. And like any other Mercedes, the E - Guardhas to pass all of the key quality and safety tests.Only then is it officially designated an E - Guardwith “High protection”, certified to the officialEuropean resistance level by independent authorities.Savour the familiar comfort of the E - Class andenjoy the highest safety standards, designed toprovide you and your fellow passengers with thebest possible protection.1Available for the E 320 CDI,E 350 and E 500

ComfortComfort made the E - Class what it is today.Or should that be the other way round ?Feel thoroughly spoiled in the E - ClassWelcome home – when it comes to making you feel secure and at ease, the E - Class has few rivals. That’s not about to change, but we have tweakeda few of the details which help produce that feeling. For example occupants can now select their preferred temperature usingthe very latest climate control systems. And sit in climatised front seats( shown here in sahara beige ) optionally equipped with heating, ventilationand luxury head restraints. Luxury which not so very long ago would havebeen unimaginable is also the keynote of options like the surround soundsystem and DVD navigation system.Driver - fitness safetyMercedes - Benz investigates the medical and psychologicalaspects of driving at its own research centre. This has ledto the development of assistance systems which have helpedto make driving not only significantly more enjoyable butalso safer. Such systems include DISTRONIC proximity controland LINGUATRONIC voice control, both of which make formore relaxed, more stress - free driving

COMFORT | Interior | 23To enjoy a perfect climate all year round,at one time you would have had to emigrateThe E - Class climate control systemsAn atmosphere of ease and comfort is standard inthe E - Class – thanks amongst other things to theeasy - to - operate THERMATIC automatic climatecontrol system with combination filter and air recirculation, which allows occupants to select temperaturelevels to suit their own individual requirements.Alternatively, the optional THERMOTRONICluxury automatic climate control system withcombination filter and air recirculation ( standardon the E 420 CDI, E 500, E 500 4MATIC andE 63 AMG ), allows separate temperature controlin four different zones. A four - quadrant solarsensor takes into account the angle of the sun’srays at each of the four seats when controllingboth the air volume and air temperature. Humid -ity and pollutant levels in the ambient air aremonitored by a multifunction sensor and if necessary,THERMOTRONIC automatically switchesto recirculation mode.An even more direct fresh air supply can beprovided if the optional electric tilting / sliding sunroofis fitted. The Saloon can also be supplied withthe panoramic sliding roof, whose large glassarea extends all the way from the front windscreento the rear windscreen.THERMATICThe controls for the automaticclimate system aresituated above the centreconsole

COMFORT | Ride comfort | 29You could go a long way to find peace and quiet. But you don’t have toYou’ll barely hear the engines. Or feel the road surfaceFine wood and sumptuous materials aren’t theonly factors which help create the exceptionalcomfort you’ll experience in the E - Class. Air playsa role too. AIRMATIC DC semi - active air suspensionkeeps uneven road surfaces at bay. It is controlledelectronically, using four different dampersettings. The Adaptive Damping System ADSautomatically controls the damping forces at eachwheel in line with current requirements androad surface conditions. The result is a smoothride even on poor roads – but not at the expenseof directional stability. On poor roads, it is alsopossible to raise the ride height manually byapproximately 25 millimetres. After driving forsome distance at a speed of about 80 km / h, orwhen the speed exceeds approximately 120 km / h,the body is automatically lowered again to itsnormal level. And at the touch of a button youcan choose between AIRMATIC DC’s three basicmodes : comfort, sports comfort and sports.AIRMATIC DC is standard on the E 420 CDI, theE 500, the E 500 4MATIC and the E 63 AMG andoptional on all other models. The silence of the E - Class is legendary. Creditfor the low noise levels inside the car goes,in part, to the measures taken to encapsulateengine noise. This and further extensive sound -absorbing measures mean that, while you’ll heara lot about the E - Class, you won’t hear a lot fromthe car itself.AIRMATIC DCThe load - adaptive all - roundself - levelling suspension keepsthe vehicle at a virtually constantride height – for consistentlyhigh comfort

30 | COMFORT | EstateThe E - Class – think bigThe Estate : the perfect packaging for your luggageA load capacity of up to 1950 litres doesn’t reallyneed further explanation. But size alone hasnever been enough for the E - Class Estate – whichis why it features such intelligent solutionsas the EASY - PACK system. A standard feature ofthis system is a retaining net to separate off theload compartment plus a load compartmentcover which moves upwards when the tailgate isopened, to make loading easier, and automaticallyreturns to its original position when the tailgateis closed. The cover is designed to protect yourluggage from the sun and from prying eyes. Also standard is the divided load - compartmentfloor whose hinged flaps open to reveal twostowage compartments, one of which is equippedwith a plastic tray. The optional electro - hydraulic EASY - PACKtailgate can be conveniently opened at the touchof a button either at the driving seat, the tail - gateitself or on the ignition key, and can be closedby pressing a button on the tailgate.EASY - PACK load - securing kitTo make sure that everything stayswhere you want it to stay, boththe Saloon and the Estate canbe supplied with an EASY - PACKload - securing kit, which holds yourcargo securely and tidily in place. It includes a telescopic bar whichattaches to cargo rails at the sidesand allows the load compartmentto be divided flexibly into differentzones. Round objects can besecured to the sides using theretractable load - restraining belt

Always a pleasureDynamism of the highest orderAgilityHow would you define driving enjoyment ? A powerful engine ? A sportysuspension ? More direct steering ? The E - Class offers all of this – but there ismore to its agility than first meets the eye. For example, the engines – boththe CDI diesel engines and the petrol engines – are not only more powerfulthan ever before, they also offer improved emissions. The DIRECT CONTROL package, with firmer suspension tuning, offers evensportier cornering due to reduced roll – but never at the expense of ridecomfort. The result is driving enjoyment of a kind which only the E - Class canoffer. The optional AIRMATIC DC air suspension takes this a stage further –by automatically adjusting the damper setting to comfortable or agile, accordingto your current driving style. To ensure that you derive lasting pleasure from your car, we regularlysubject the E - Class to gruelling endurance tests. For example we packed threestandard - production E 320 CDI models off to the Laredo high - speed testtrack in the Texan desert, where they all completed 100,000 miles of drivingat an average speed of 224 km / h, interrupted only by brief refuelling andmaintenance stops. This was not only a world record, it also proved that theE - Class offers top performance in every detail. The E - Class demonstrated its impressive fuel economy and enviable reliabilityduring the longest diesel marathon of all time. From October 21 toNovember 17, 2006, 33 E 320 CDI models and three E 300 BlueTEC modelstook part in the transcontinental Paris – Beijing rally – a journey spanningaround 14,000 kilometres and including unfinished road surfaces, steppes, deserts, snow and ice. Given the full load and winter tyres, the average consumptionof 8.32 l / 100 km was astonishingly low. The best figure for a dailystage was just 5.5 litres. And to round off the impressive performance, thetechnical team had “no special incidents” to report – despite the fact that thecars had covered a combined distance of 640,000 kilometres.

34 | AGILITY | Diesel enginesStaying aheadThe CDI diesel enginesThe range of CDI engines starts with powerful, smooth and fuel - efficient 4 - cylinder in - lineengines in the E 200 CDI and E 220 CDI.Offering 100 kW ( 136 hp ) and 340 Nm and125 kW ( 170 hp ) and 400 Nm, respectively, theymake economical driving particularly enjoyable. To ensure a high degree of refinement, bothengines are fitted with a Lanchester balancer plusan array of damping elements. You find a particularly low - emission versionin the list of 6 - cylinder diesels available for theE - Class : BlueTEC. This intelligent diesel technologyturns these engines into some of thecleanest and most efficient powerplants in theworld. The E 300 BlueTEC models are characterisedby a high torque of 540 Nm while still retainingtheir high fuel economy and at the same timealready complying with tomorrow’s Europeanemissions standards. The smoothness providedby the common - rail injection technology is alsoshared by the other 6 - cylinder diesel enginesin the E - Class, while piezo injectors contributea noticeable amount of extra dynamism. Finecrystals which contract when subjected to anelectrical current make it possible to meter thefuel with the utmost precision. This makes foreven better throttle response. The V - enginedE 280 CDI and E 320 CDI, which have outputs of140 kW ( 190 hp ) and 165 kW ( 224 hp ), respectively, are also available as 4MATIC versions with all -wheel drive. The top - of - the - line diesel model is the E 420CDI*, which features one of the highest - torqueV8 car diesel engines in the world. The 231 kW( 314 hp ) powerplant delivers a maximum torqueof 730 Nm at a mere 2200 rpm and accelerates theE 420 CDI from 0 to 100 km / h in just 6.1 seconds.A particulate filter is standard for all dieselmodels, helping to minimise particulate emissions.*The E 420 CDI is not available as an Estate850E 320 CDI320750280650550450540 Nm165 kW2402001603502501000 3000 5000 7000Engine speed ( rpm )120Torque ( Nm ) Output ( kW )80E 320 CDIThe performance curve ofthe E 320 CDI – an exampleof cutting - edge diesel technology

More power, less fuelPowerful statistics – the E - Class petrol enginesWe go to extraordinary lengths to produce thespecial driving experience offered by the E - Class. The 4 - cylinder in - line supercharged engine inthe E 200 K gets off to a strong start – with an outputof 135 kW ( 184 hp ).A sophisticated technology package is also thesecret behind the 6 - cylinder V - engines in theE 230, E 280, E 350 and E 350 CGI. All four camshafts, for example, feature variable adjustmentacross the entire engine speed range – ensuringthat high torque is available from low revs on up.Optimised fuel combustion also results in lowerconsumption, while a balancer shaft ensuressmooth operation. The 6 - cylinder direct - injection petrol engineunder the bonnet of the E 350 CGI uses piezo injectorswhich spray the fuel directly into thecombustion chamber. This improves mixture formation, resulting in virtually complete combustionwith low pollutant emissions. The engine buildsup to its maximum output of 215 kW ( 292 hp ) ina smooth progression, with torque peaking at365 Nm.For an even more assured ride, especially whenroad conditions are unfavourable, the E 280 andE 350 are both available as 4MATIC versions withall - wheel drive. The E 500 comes with a superior V8 engine. Thekey data : 5.5 - litre displacement, 285 kW ( 388 hp )output and a maximum torque of 530 Nm. Theresult : a sublime driving experience, whateverthe situation. Thanks to a longer final drive ratio,we were able to lower the engine speed level – andwith it the noise level. The E 500 too is avail -ab le with 4MATIC all - wheel drive. The top - of - the - line E - Class engine is the newAMG high - performance powerplant in theE 63 AMG – with an output of 378 kW ( 514 hp ).Find out more about this model from page 46.1050950850750650550E 63 AMG630 Nm378 kW4003603202802402004501602000 4000 6000 8000Engine speed ( rpm )Torque ( Nm ) Output ( kW )E 63 AMGWorthy of a sports car – it’snot often you can savourengine performance like thisin such comfortable surroundings
