As weenter2010 it’s a good thing to look back at thechallenges of 2009, a year of economic turmoil,uncertainty, and tough business conditions whichMauiSails managed to navigate with some excitingsuccesses. From the beginning of the year wewere happy to get top results in Formula, Slalom,Waves, and Freestyle in National and Internationalcompetitions, and the user response to thequality, handling, and performance of the entirerange of products is positive and complimentary.Despite the global problems we have plenty to beoptimistic about for the future.Although competition results are only onemeasure of our success, we can look to theChampionship performances as a gauge of thespeed, control, and maneuverability found in allour products. Marta Hlavaty (FW World Champion),Josh Angulo (PWA World Champion for Waves),Taty Frans (winner 2009 Sylt Freestyle) and Stevenvan Broekhoven (winner 2009 EFPT tour and fifthplace overall for 2009 PWA Freestyle) are amongthe many who have top finishes. The drive todeliver contest winning performance matches ourdesire to develop products that will make sailingthe easiest, most enjoyable time you can spend.Designer Artur Szpunar has a free hand to createbold and recognizable graphic looks that areintegrated with durable structure and functionon the water. His passion for the sport anddeveloping understanding of the hidden elementsof performance make his efforts personallyrewarding, especially since he is testing almostdaily in our tough Maui conditions. Working withme and MauiSails’ master sail-tester, Phil McGain,keeps the standard at the highest level.Our goal is an efficient rig that is not only fast withgood power, but also feels light and balanced inthe wind. The rig package should be reactive,‘breathing’ and responding to gusts whilemaintaining good stability. Full powered race sailsblasting over chop at maximum speed, absorbingthe gusts and transforming them into useableenergy regardless of surface conditions, or wavesails used for charging down the line and poweringthrough hard bottom turns and instantly releasingand feeling neutral off the top benefit from thisshaping technique.Our goal for 2010 is to havemore people experience thekind of performance that powersChampions to win, and makes itpossible for everyone else to beable to enjoy the sport more easilyand with more excitement.AlohaBarry SpanierWelcome in 2010
