Rancho TemescalBreeding And Foaling, Stallion Suances Added To Long ListOf Services Offered By Ideally Located <strong>Thoroughbred</strong> FarmRancho Temescal,one of <strong>California</strong>’s premierfarms, has enteredthe full-service arenafor <strong>2008</strong>, adding breedingand foaling to itslist of services andbringing on board itsfirst major stallion,Suances (GB), the French champion, who also was a gradedstakes winner in the United States while racing for RanchoTemescal owner Jed Cohen’s Red Baron’s Barn LLC.Located in an area known as the “Hidden Jewel ofVentura County,” Rancho Temescal is tucked away in asecluded valley below Lake Piru and has been operating forsix years on its 6,000-acre spread. The original 100 acresdevoted to <strong>Thoroughbred</strong>s has now been expanded to 125acres, which still allows almost limitless opportunities for furthergrowth.Tim Cohen, who runs the business operations says,“The focus is to grow and care for racehorses. . .our customersenjoy the benefits of clean air, open space andluxurious, uncrowded, grass pastures. Our purpose is toraise happy and healthy equine athletes. We enjoy anexcellent client base, and are currently expanding toservice increasing demand.”The ranch is located in the town of Piru, about 12miles west of Valencia. That puts it about an hour’sdrive from Santa Anita Park, Hollywood Park and BarrettsEquine Ltd.As well as the additions completed in <strong>2008</strong>, the ranchalso caters to mares, weanlings, yearlings, sales preparationand lay-ups. Cohen says, “ Our current aim is tooperate an elite program combining the best in naturalsurroundings, with the highest level of care, training, andsales preparation.” Among the facility’s 90 stalls are amain barn with 23 stalls, two “mare motels” with 24 stalls,20 sand pens that are 20 feet by 40 feet, 17 individual pasturesranging from ahalf-acre to 12 acres, aEuro-Ciser and 70-footround pen.Listed among theranch’s strengths is thewidely respected FarmManager, Ted PearceSr., and a well integratedstaff with racetrack and farm experience.Suances has been standing at Rancho Temescal since2006. His 2007 crop were so impressive, his yearling averageat the Barretts October sale was $16,400. Suances is a statuesqueson of Most Welcome. A group I winner in Francehe was the highweighted three-year-old on the FrenchHandicap at seven to 9 1/2 furlongs. Hubert Guy, one ofthe most respected bloodstock agents, probably summed upSuances best when quoted as saying, “Over the years, Ibrought many fine horses to the United States. Twenty-oneof these horses have won grade I races, including four Breeders’Cup races. In my opinion, Suances was the best horse Iever brought to the United States.” In the U.S., trained byDarrell Vienna, Cohen’s long-time conditioner, he won thegrade II San Francisco Breeders’ Cup Mile Handicap easilydefeating the Tin Man, Decarchy and Sarafan. He literallystrolled to victory in the Dallas Turf Cup Handicap.He ran at ages five and six for Jed Cohen in NorthAmerica and was trained by Darrell Vienna, Cohen’slong-time conditioner.While the ranch is relatively new on the <strong>Thoroughbred</strong>landscape, it traces back to 1871, when it was deeded asone of the original Spanish Land Grants.
