Such exposure can result <strong>in</strong> an<strong>in</strong>creased absorption of lead <strong>in</strong> the body.Lead enters the body by absorption through thelungs and stomach and is transported around thebody <strong>in</strong> the blood stream. In a healthy adult muchof this lead is excreted, however some may bedeposited <strong>in</strong> body tissue and bones.An <strong>in</strong>creased absorption of lead can affect yourblood mak<strong>in</strong>g, renal and nervous systems.Prolonged excessive absorption of lead mayresult <strong>in</strong> adverse health effects such as headaches,tiredness, constipation and weight loss.Know your Blood Lead LevelA blood lead test is a simple f<strong>in</strong>ger prick and will tellyou your blood lead level.Workers should have a blood lead test> Before start<strong>in</strong>g the contract> Dur<strong>in</strong>g the contract (depend<strong>in</strong>g on lengthof contract)> At the end of the contract.Keep your Blood Lead Levelto a m<strong>in</strong>imum> Wash & dry your hands before eat<strong>in</strong>g & dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g> Don’t smoke whilst work<strong>in</strong>g> No eat<strong>in</strong>g or dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g on site> Use protective cloth<strong>in</strong>g & equipment <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gmasks & respirators (P2 dust & fume rated)> Eat regular meals and a healthy diet high<strong>in</strong> calcium & iron (empty stomachs aidlead absorption).Use Lead Safe PracticesUse work practices that m<strong>in</strong>imise the spreadof airborne dust.This <strong>in</strong>cludes:> Us<strong>in</strong>g water to suppress dust contam<strong>in</strong>ationby dampen<strong>in</strong>g down areas and surfaces> Seal work area off us<strong>in</strong>g plastic & tape. Coverfloors, doors, w<strong>in</strong>dows & open<strong>in</strong>gs to conta<strong>in</strong>dust <strong>in</strong> work area> Wear protective cloth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g overalls,gloves and work boots> Wear protective equipment, face masksor respirators (P2 dust & fume)> Trucks should have good seals& air-conditioned cab<strong>in</strong>s> Loads should always be covered> All w<strong>in</strong>dows on vehicles should be closedat all times> Use a clean area for eat<strong>in</strong>g & dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g awayfrom the worksite> Discourage family visits to work sites.Remember time taken to prepare the work areawill prevent other parts of the build<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>gcontam<strong>in</strong>ated & make clean-up easier.PLANBE AWAREPROTECTCLEAN-UP
