The Chamber gets Social!
We know that it is something our members have likely all questioned: how
much stake to put in the importance of Social Media? For some, Twitter,
Facebook and other media outlets are old news and as much a part of our daily
lives as consumers of media as the morning paper (and if you are a member of
Generation Y, you may be asking, ―what the heck is a morning paper?‖). The
online landscape is ever-changing, to be sure, but there is no question that
social media is here to stay and has impacted the way we all do business, from
engaging with our patrons and sharing event information to generating and
sharing web content.
The East Kawartha Chamber is pleased to announce that we have established
accounts on both Facebook and Twitter, and we sincerely hope that you will
follow our news, events, photos and member news on these pages. We
encourage you to read, post comments and pass on feedback through these
mediums, which we intend to update frequently.
Have something to celebrate? Some news about your business that you would
like to share? Send it our way, and we’d be happy to share on Facebook and/
or Twitter. You can also link to our weekly Newsflashes from either page.

President’s Communiqué
Hello Chamber
Members:
After a slow start, winter
has finally arrived in the
Kawarthas! For some, this
time of year is when
business is in full swing
and for others, you are
now hibernating, getting
ready for another great
summer. However you
spend your winter, I hope
it is filled with fun and
each of you can find time
to do the things you hope
to.
At the chamber office,
work continues on—in
fact, it is extremely busy as
the staff prepare for the
launch of this year’s annual
business directory. The
directory is a huge
undertaking but is also a
great benefit to our
members. We can all look
forward to another great
design this year. We are
also preparing for our
upcoming Annual General
Britt Leeking is thrilled to
join the team at the
Chamber in the role of
Marketing and
Membership Coordinator.
Britt is a Peterborough
native and PCVS alum.
She has a BA in Theatre
and English from Acadia
University and completed
her MA Theatre Studies at
Meeting to be held on
Wednesday February 22,
2012 at 5:30pm at The
Village Inn in Lakefield.

about our future.
On Monday January 23rd,
we held our first Business
After Hours of 2012 which
was hosted by B.E.L.
Rotary Club at Chemong
Lodge in Bridgenorth. A
great turnout at the event
started the year out right
and many enjoyed the
fellowship and information
shared.
We encourage you to
participate in PolarFest (on
until Feb. 5th) and the
Apsley Winter Carnival,
which is held on the
weekend of February 25th.
These are great family
events with lots to do and
see throughout the area.
The Chamber is happy to
once again provide
the University of Leeds.
She worked as an Assistant
Head of House and
Outdoor Education
instructor at Lakefield
College School before
moving into the role of
Assistant Director of
Enrolment, which she
enjoyed for three years.
Most recently, she was
Recruitment Assistant and
sponsorship for PolarFest
ice carving and the skijoring
event in Apsley.
The Chamber has now
arrived on Facebook and
Twitter. Thanks go out to
our Marketing and
Membership Coordinator,
Britt Leeking, for creating
our pages. Follow us to
receive updates and
information about the
Chamber, member news
and events.
A big thank you to all of the
staff and volunteers of the
Chamber who continue to
work so hard to further our
goals. All of the members
benefit from the great work

Benefit Facts by Brian D. Bulger - Group Insurance Plan Representative
An Employer’s Obligation to their Employees
Once an employer has a
benefit plan in place for
their firm they are
obligated to inform their
insurer whenever their
employee's earnings
change. The purpose of
keeping employee's
earnings current is to
ensure that their disability
coverage stays current.
Failure to do so could be a
costly mistake for any
employer, because if an
employee becomes
disabled and they receive
less disability income than
what they are eligible for,
the employer could be held
responsible by the
employee for the shortfall.
In January of every year,
the Administrators of the
Chambers of Commerce
Group Insurance Plan mail
a form called the Annual
Firm Update to each and
every firm who is insured
on the Plan. The form
provides a list of all of the
employees who participate
in a firm's benefit plan as
well as each person's gross
monthly earnings. It also
shows the dates of birth of
each participant, asks if
there has been any changes
to anyone's earnings and
provides a place to show
everyone's current
earnings.
The reason this form is
sent out in January each
year is because many firms
use December 31st as their
year end. Therefore, for
many employees January is
a time for raises and other
income adjustments.
Most other group benefit
insurers use the annual
renewal date of their
client’s group plan to
remind clients to update
their employee's earnings.
As an increase in income
will provide a higher level
of disability coverage,
many employees will be
asked to provide medical
evidence for proof of their
good health. It's typical for
an insurance company to
request eligible employees
to complete and submit
health statements for
underwriting. Additional
questionnaires
and a visit by a
nurse for
further medical
information
may also be
required.
Employees
don't have to
apply for the
excess disability
coverage if for
some reason
they don't wish
to, as it's their
choice. Not
wanting to pay
the additional
premium cost
or having a preexisting
health
condition that
would cause
them to be

declined the excess coverage
are two reasons that come to
mind why an employee may
not want to apply.
A firm can and should notify
their insurer of changes to the
earnings of their employees
right when they take place.
And I further recommend to
my firm clients to retain
documents as proof of their
actions.

of networking,
catching up with peers,
meeting our newest
Chamber members, food
and drink!
Tony Davidson made an
excellent presentation on
behalf of B.E.L Rotary,
noting the extensive work
they do in this community,
across Canada and
internationally to promote
cultural exchange
and improve the lives of
others through health
care and community development
initiatives. In
addition to the fabulous
work that B.E.L Rotary
has done for over 30
a Registered Professional
Planner in the Province of
Ontario. Michael joined
EcoVue in November of
2010. He is a graduate of
the School of Urban
Planning at Ryerson
University and also holds a
Bachelor of Commerce
from the University of
Toronto.
EcoVue, which is based in
Lakefield, specializes in
years, they are the host of
the annual Polar Plunge,
which raised over $85,000
in 2011, boasting over 150
jumpers. With 40% of
funds raised going to the
Rotary Club, 60% of donations
go to the jumper’s
charity of choice, further
extending the reach of this
event.
We were so pleased that
