internships
Hogeschool IVA
Students at college level
Realistic intern assignments
Less than half a year in-company
Intensive counselling from
Driebergen, The Netherlands

Students of IVA Driebergen
Hogeschool IVA offers students a unique combination of relevant subjects.
For three years they increase their knowledge of management, commerce and
technology. As theoretical subject matter alone is not sufficient, the Hogeschool
IVA student spends much time developing social skills and increasing his experience
in business practice. After the third year of studies the student completes
a six-month internship - for instance in your company.
A long name for a concise education
The full name for Hogeschool IVA is: Institute for management education for the
mobility branch. The first two years cover a broad array of subjects with the emphasis
on operational management, business administration, industrial and consumer sales,
technology and communications. The student also gains professional experience during
a sales job on Saturdays.
The third year of theory calls for specialisation. Important subjects are financial management,
quality management, marketing, operational management and corporate
communication.
This will lead to the last phase in gaining the bachelor’s degree. After three years of
theory the student completes his education with a six-month internship and by writing
a thesis. An internship is an excellent introduction for the student into corporate practise
and could even lead to a long-term relationship to the mutual benefit of both student
and company.
Worthwhile analysis within your company
The intern has an assignment that will benefit your company. The student will analyse
a real subject. Eventually, the analysis will lead to suggestions for improving those
matters that could be done more efficiently.
An intern has targets
An internship is a preparation for business practise, which means that the intern has
a number of targets. First, he will want to test if his theoretical knowledge meets daily
practice. Moreover, he will want to develop his advisory qualities. Next, he will want to
investigate the differences between theory and the subtle distinctions between complex
problems in business practise. The fourth target is to gain an insight in purpose,
structure and strategy of a company as well as its concomitant processes. Eventually,
he will want to learn to improve his social skills and communication within a corporate
culture.
A clear assignment
The wording of an internship assignment is an important step. The student will spend
time and effort and pay attention to describing his assignment and determining the
scope in which he will work. Hence, a lucid and realistic project comes into being that
is valuable to the company providing the post. The company can expect college-level
intellect. The inset shows examples of recent projects.
Coaching: intern and company benefit
By offering an internship you enable a student to learn to make the link
between school and business. Apart from that you are the first to contact
this pre-graduate - the knife cuts both ways. It speaks for itself that you
coach the student. This should not be underestimated, but should not be
needlessly time-consuming either. It is advisable to appoint a regular coach
within your business.
The coach is to:
• induct the student into the company
• provide a workstation as well as means of communication
• determine the intern’s duties
• allow access to sources of information
• take responsibility for direct coaching, management and (final) assessment
Facts
In principle, the student’s internship is an unbroken
period of six months. The starting date is between
July and October 1st at the latest. At the end of the
internship the company provides a statement certifying
that the student has completed a 120 days’
internship.
Arrangements pertaining to the internship are put
in writing in a letter of acknowledgement between
company and student. The most important aspects
of the internship are:
• Learning process
The internship is part of the learning process under
the responsibilities of Hogeschool IVA and is not a
labour contract.
• Expenses
Expenses including travel are compensated.
A compensation of ca. € 500 is considered reasonable.
• Probation
The probation period for the internship is two months.
• Confidentiality/embargo
The student is to consider confidential information
as such and not to divulge it to anyone.
The student’s project paper may be embargoed.
• Social security/internal revenue service
The company providing the internship is to register
the student for social security insurances as well as
the internal revenue service.
• Insurance
In principle the student is included in the thirdparty
insurance of IVA Driebergen for its students.
Coaching from Driebergen, The Netherlands
The college will not leave the student to his own
devices. Coaching from IVA Driebergen is intensive
with the Internships Co-ordinator being the person
the student reports to. He is responsible for coaching
the students in search of an internship. He will also
check if the wording of the assignment meets the
criteria of the education. Also a member of the IVA
faculty will be responsible for specialised coaching.
The faculty member is the contact during the internship
and monitors progress as well as ultimately
assess the project.
