Planned Giving CornerBy Ned Y. Sato, Attorney, Montgomery Purdue Blankinship & Austin PLLC, and Endowment Technical AdvisoryCommittee ChairANSWERS TO YOUR PLANNED GIVING QUESTIONSMy wife and I live on a limitedincome. How can we make aplanned gift when we can’t afforda large contribution?People often associate “plannedgiving” with large charitable gifts. It canbe, but a planned gift is just that: acharitable gift that requires muchthought on the part of the donor andhelps them achieve their philanthropicand financial objectives. The amountone gives is relative to each donor’ssituation. A planned gift can be a cashcontribution, or can be funded bysecurities, life insurance, real estate, retirement assets or tangible personalproperty. Depending upon the type ofplanned giving vehicle you choose, small gifts may, over time, result infinancial support that is greater thanyou thought possible. Is an attorney the only advisorwho can help me with a plannedgift?Planned gifts are often createdthrough estate planning. Dependingupon circumstances and the type ofplanned gift you choose, other advisorsmay also help you develop a gift thatsuits your needs. Some of these areaccountants, insurance professionals,Certified Financial Planners (CFP),trust officers, stockbrokers and realestate agents. What are the benefits ofplanned giving? There are as many reasons for givinga planned gift as there are people givingthem; certainly for many people, the taxbenefits top the list. But there are manyother reasons as well. Planned givingis a way to give creatively and receivefinancial benefits. It can also be assimple as honoring a loved one, leavingan enduring legacy or continuing tobuild upon past support to a cause thathas been important to you or yourfamily during your life. Planned giftscan be a way for people to make largergifts than would be possible otherwise, and for some, the only way to make amajor gift. Getting a tax break is just oneof the many benefits of planned giving.I’d like to give a planned gift.Where do I start?Consider if you have any specificobjectives for your planned gift and thendiscuss your plans with your family. Youmay then want to seek the guidance andcounsel of a qualified professional to putyour thoughtful intentions into action.Your careful planning and generositywill help continue the good work of yourfavorite organization for years to come.If you would like more informationon planned giving, please contact SaraOshikawa-Clay at (206) 726-6522, orsarao@nikkeiconcerns.org To donate your vehicle, call (206) 726-6550 or visitwww.nikkeiconcerns.orgLeroy and Janet HisayasuFumiko HoshideSally HurstMohammed HussenRobert IguchiJoe IkéWoodrow and Tei ItoGary KatoMerwin KatoArthur and Sally KawaguchiSayaka KawakamiShozo and Sara KosugiKikue KubotaAlan KurimuraThomas Lane and Susan Okamoto LaneKen Lee and Janet KwaiTennyson LeungStefanie and Wayne LindgrenWes LockeBecky MikamiDianne and Gary MikasaDave and Victoria MilesRichard MiyakeBob MizukamiGeorge MomodaAkira MoriguchiDenise MoriguchiToshi and Susie MoriguchiHisayo and John NakaharaJames NakasoneJerry and Yuka NakataTony NakataNichiren Buddhist ChurchJoe and Diana OhashiTatemasa and Ruth OkiTerry SaoSandy, Ned, and Christopher SatoHarry SatoFumio and Emily ShibataStan ShikumaMas and Shirley ShimadaSaki ShimizuTazu ShimoguchiLucho and Edna SinghCharles and Maria SterlingAdam KriefallAnn TerryDaisy TomitaBob and Jeanette TsukuiToshio UyejiJack WooJane YamagiwaJoji YokoyamaChristine Yorozu and Richard SmithHarry and Elaine YoshiharaMarge YoungTAYORI • Newsletter of Nikkei Concerns 7

ENDOWMENTCAMPAIGNHenry I. DatyA LIFE OF QUIET ALTRUISMby Darlene Suyematsu, Director of Development and CommunicationsThe Nikkei Concerns Generations ofCaring Endowment Campaign waslaunched in September 2000 on the25 th Anniversary of the organization. The generous seed contributions of fourcaring and visionary donorsestablished a firm foundation ofsupport for the Endowment and set thecampaign in motion. Mr. Henry I.Daty was one of these gracious seeddonors; his Endowment gift theculmination of more than two decadesof support. Mr. Daty passed away atthe age of 83 on January 3, 2004 inArdsley, New York.Henry Daty is described in hismemorial program as “A man of greatachievements and even greatergenerosity…” A simple statement, butso well describes the character of theman and his accomplishments, bothprofessionally and personally, whichdefined his life.Henry Daty’s parents immigrated toSeattle in the early 1900s where Henryand his three sisters were born andraised. The family lived in Seattle until1941 when WWII led to theirinternment at Camp Minidoka. It wasat Camp Minidoka that mutual friendsintroduced Henry to his future wife,Lillian, and romance bloomed. In 1943,Henry volunteered for the US Army,77 th Infantry Division’s Counter-Intelligence Corps. After an honorabledischarge from the Army, Henryworked in Japan for several years beforereturning to work in the U.S. in 1950.Beginning his business career in theNew York offices of C.T. Takahashi &Co., a Japanese paper-manufacturingcompany, Henry traveled betweenTokyo, Seattle and New York. Hecontributed to the economicdevelopment between Japan and theUnited States firsthand during his yearsthere and subsequently as President ofHenry Datyhis own company, H.I. Daty, Inc. He wasappointed an “Admiral of the GeorgiaNavy” in 1982 by the Governor ofGeorgia and awarded Third Class Orderof the Sacred Treasure by the Emperorof Japan in 1984. These honors reflectedhis contributions to the economiesdomestically and abroad. In 1987,Henry helped establish a memorial tohonor Japanese Americans who died inmilitary service. In November 2000 thededication of the Japanese AmericanMemorial Foundation was celebrated inWashington D.C. This accomplishmentproved to be Henry’s last major projectbut one which instilled in him a greatsense of pride.Described as a determined person, his love of family, particularly hisgrandson, Timothy, was indisputable.Henry’s son, Michael, (Timothy’sWe are grateful to the followingseed donors who have contributed$1.1 million to the Nikkei ConcernsEndowment Campaign:Ayame Kai GuildHenry DatyPerry Ko & FamilyC.T. Takahashifather) told of the special bond they had. When Henry was in the hospital someyears ago, he asked Michael howTimothy was. Michael told his fatherthat Tim was at home sick because heknew his grandfather was not feelingwell. At hearing this, Michael could seehis father’s eyes well up with tears. Aspeople came to know Henry, theyexperienced this kind and gentle nature.Proud of his Japanese-Americanheritage, Henry Daty quietly offered hisfinancial support to many cultural andeducational organizations on both Westand East coasts. He gave frequently andgenerously, often anonymously. As hisdaughter-in-law, Bembie, shared,Henry “measured his life by what he cando for others.”Domo arigato gozaimasu,Daty-san. We are honored to haveknown you. Your life and deeds are aninspiration to us; they touch and teachus. Creating Community at the ManorGROUP VISITORS KEEP RESIDENTS CONNECTEDBy Naoko Ulstein, Nikkei Manor Activities CoordinatorMany Nikkei Manor residents wereactive in the community through theirinvolvement with various groups, churches and organizations prior tomoving into Nikkei Manor. It ischallenging to keep your social life asactive as before when you have a limitedability to drive. One of the great thingsabout living in a place like Nikkei Manoris that people in the community cometo you instead of you going out to meetthem. I would like to introduce someof our regular group visitors to NikkeiManor. Two of the local churches holdregular services at Nikkei Manor.Seattle Buddhist Church members comehere on the first and third Thursdays ofHowa Kai at Nikkei Manor, with Reverend Castro. The Seattle Buddhist Church Choir singing at Nikkei Manor, includes resident Mitsu Kato, far left.the month. The church offers an Englishservice and a Japanese service called“Howa Kai” for our residents. There arequite a few residents who belonged to aBuddhist Church in Seattle, White Riveror other areas, and they enjoy being ableto attend the services right where theylive. Along with Reverend Fujii andReverend Castro, about five regularchurch members volunteer to help withthe services. Following the service, some residents gather with their churchfriends for the Thursday ice creamsocial.Every fourth Sunday, JapaneseBaptist Church members bring theirlively service to Nikkei Manor. Eversince Reverend Peter Koshi startedThe Rainbow Chorusthe service, it has included wonderfulmusic performed by volunteers.Currently Yuki Sakiyama, AssociateLay Minister, and several churchmembers visit our residents on Sundayafternoon. Some of the churchmembers have been faithfullyvolunteering for six years since theirfirst service here at Nikkei Manor. Someof the non-Christian residents alsoattend this service and enjoy thebeautiful music.Another great benefit of living inNikkei Manor is that manyentertainment groups visit. Kokoro KaiAdult DayProgramSpecial Touchesfrom SpecialVolunteersBy Naoko Ulstein, Kokoro Kai DirectorEvery April, there’s a special week tocelebrate and to appreciate volunteersnationwide. This year Nikkei Concernsheld our Volunteer Appreciation Weekat the end of April. Time goes by soquickly and it’s easy to get into a weeklyroutine of work. Sometimes we forgetto stop and take the time to thank eachvolunteer for what he or she does for ourparticipants and the Nikkei Manorresidents. For the Kokoro Kai program, our volunteers are essential in carryingout daily activities and creating a safeenvironment for our participants. Butour volunteers often do much more thanwhat they are expected to do, revealinga true dedication to serve our elderly inthe community.Kokoro Kai Tea Time is alwayssomething participants eagerlyanticipate. Many of our volunteers areexcellent gardeners and bring flowersfrom their gardens to decorate the tablesand to give to participants. Mondayvolunteer Ruth Yoshida can groweverything from flowers to vegetables. This spring Wednesday volunteer KiyoTakeshima brought peonies so hugewe couldn’t help comparing the size ofthese large flowers with our faces.Another Tea Time treat is ourvolunteers’ home baked snacks. Thanksto volunteers, our Tea Time is so special.Friday volunteer Saeko Aoyamadonated very nice aprons that she madefor participants to use duringlunchtime. Those aprons have prettyflower patterns on the towel material, but more importantly, they arethoughtfully designed and durable.Saeko considered what would work forparticipants, and one day she madethem without even being asked. I amso lucky to work for Kokoro Kai becausewe have many volunteers like Saeko. There are quite a few participantsand Nikkei Manor residents who usedto live in the Auburn area. Mondayvolunteer Hattie Sao brought a newbook called “Shirakawa,” whichintroduces the history of JapaneseAmerican families from that area toshare with everyone. Hattie is also goodat crocheting. She always donates manynylon scrubs to the Kokoro Kaivolunteer table at the Ayame KaiHoliday Fair. She says that she makesthose whenever she sits down in frontof the TV. Those Nisei volunteers reallyknow how to use time efficiently.Mary Yoshida, a Wednesdayvolunteer from Bainbridge Island, brought some newspaper articles onJapanese Americans from the islandpaper last year. Since many of ourvolunteers lived through the difficulttimes of Japanese-American history inthis area with many participants, thereis a strong connection between thosevolunteers and participants.Another group of volunteers whom Icannot thank enough are our volunteerdrivers who transport participantsVolunteers Sallie Yamada, Martha Taniguchi,Sumiko Inouye and Mitsuyo Oki bring flowers tobeautify the Kokoro Kai room.living outside of our pick up route. These volunteers use their own vehiclesto bring participants to Kokoro Kai inthe morning and take them home in theafternoon. We have three volunteerdrivers right now: Kenji Onishi,George Momoda and TomTamanaha. They are such goodfriends to our participants, and ofcourse have true volunteer spirits. It is impossible to write about all theextra things our volunteers do for theKokoro Kai, so these are just a fewexamples that I can share with you thistime. Kokoro Kai is blessed by all thededicated volunteers who make theprogram a heartwarming place whereeveryone looks forward to coming, notjust participants, but the staff, too -including myself. A Big “ARIGATO” toKokoro Kai volunteers from the bottomof my heart! If you are interested in learningmore about Kokoro Kai orvolunteering, please contact NaokoUlstein at (206) 726-6474 ornaokou@nikkeiconcerns.org.
