A SSIC is a four or five digit number that stands for the <strong>subject</strong> of adocument. SSICs are required on all Navy and Marine Corps letters, messages, directives, formsand reports regardless of medium. The use of SSICs provides a tested method for filingdocuments consistently and retrieving them quickly. SSIC is the system the DON uses to meetthe requirements of 36 C.F.R. § 1222.50.2. SSICs. The Navy SSIC system is divided into 13 major <strong>subject</strong> groups.1000-1999 Military PersonnelIncludes <strong>subject</strong>s relating solely to the administration of military personnel. Civilian personnel<strong>subject</strong>s are included in the 12000 series. General personnel <strong>subject</strong>s relating to both civilian andmilitary personnel are included in the 5000 series.2000-2999 TelecommunicationsIncludes <strong>subject</strong>s relating to general communication matters and to communication systems andequipment.3000-3999 Operations and Readiness4000-4999 LogisticsIncludes <strong>subject</strong>s related to such matters as operational plans, fleet operations, operational trainingand readiness, warfare techniques, operational intelligence, research and development, andgeophysical and hydrographic support.Includes <strong>subject</strong>s relating to the logistical support of the Navy and Marine Corps, includingprocurement, supply control, property redistribution and disposal, travel and transportation,maintenance, construction and conversion, production and mobilization planning, and foreignmilitary assistance.5000-5999 General Administration and ManagementIncludes <strong>subject</strong>s relating to the administration, organization, and management of the Departmentof the Navy, including general personnel matters (concerning both civilian and militarypersonnel), records management programs, security, external and internal relations, audiovisualmanagement, law and legal matters, office services, office automation, and publication andprinting matters.6000-6999 Medicine and DentistryIncluding <strong>subject</strong> relating to medical matters such as physical fitness, general medicine, special orpreventive medicine, dentistry, and medical equipment and supplies.7000-7999 Financial Management8UNCLASSIFIED
