Volume 4 PIUS CONNECTIONS Spring 2007The Superintendent’s SpotlightDear Pius X Alumni & Friends,For a school administrator, there are times when it feels like trial and tribulation are the only elements thatmake up the school day. We certainly have our challenges in fulfilling the mission of the school. High schoollife can be tough, especially in our world today. Because the administrator regularly faces these challenges,it tends to feel like this is all the news there is. The administrator’s perception may therefore become a littleskewed. That is why, in this particular article, I would like to highlight a few of the good things happeninghere at Pius X this year. Let’s hear some good news!As mentioned in the last issue of “Connections,” Pius X was named one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the country in 2006.This honor, placing us in the top 4 percent of all Catholic schools, is something that bears repeating. We have not changed the way wedo things here as a result of the honor, yet we are happy someone outside our institution recognized our efforts. We’re nearing the end of our capital campaign and have received almost $16 million in pledges exceeding our $13 million goal. Thiscampaign has been wonderful for so many reasons, most particularly because I’ve had the opportunity to see the kind of commitmentto Catholic education there really is here in Lincoln. I never imagined we would raise more in pledges in this single campaign than inall previous campaigns combined. This kind of commitment clearly comes from a common desire to see our children reared as disciplesof Jesus.Construction for our new Commons, six additional classrooms and renovated art and library areas continues to move along at asteady pace. This expansion also includes an additional 600 square feet, which is being added to allow for a new catering kitchen so thathealthy lunches will begin to be served in August. The construction project is scheduled to be finished by the time school begins in thefall. The added space will provide much needed room, particularly since next year’s enrollment will see a dramatic increase. So far ourlargest graduating class had 258 students. At this time, we have 285 registered for next year’s freshman class. As we near the completion of the second year of our new Excellence Program, we continue to see a noticeably improved learningenvironment in our classrooms. In addition to experience and level of education, our teachers are now recognized and compensated fortheir abilities. All signs indicate this kind of accountability, which is not typically found in an educational setting, is clearly having apositive impact on our students’ success, and empowers our teachers by giving them a clear sense of accomplishment. This year’s students taking the ACT have reflected our high academic standards as 13 percent scored 30 or higher on the test. Thesignificance of this percentage is most noticeable when compared to the national average, in which only 3 percent of all students whotake this test score 30 or higher.Keeping tuition low with a new matching grant program for the 2007-08 school year is one of the latest indicators of the kind ofschool Pius X is. Compare our $1,250 freshman tuition rate to other Catholic high schools in the country or Nebraska alone. Pius X isnot headed in the direction of becoming just another private school available only to the affluent. How important this is in accomplishingour mission! Fortunately, a generous donor has presented us with the opportunity to receive $100,000 in matching grant money for a2007-2008 teacher incentive pay program. More information about this matching grant program can be found on page four. All of the items I’ve listed above are important and very much a part of what a high school should be about. But the final point bears adirect reflection on our unique mission. Of all these points made about the good things happening at Pius X, what is closest to my heart isthat we currently have 10 Pius X graduates studying for the priesthood and five Pius X graduates in religious formation. In fact, Sr. KarenWilson, class of 1998, made her final profession as a Marian Sister on April 29. I am very happy to be able to give you this news!We have received so many blessings directly from the loving hands of God! Of course these blessings come to us by way of the greatmany who selflessly give of themselves, especially our teachers. How could we accomplish our mission to “Restore All Things in Christ”if not for each individual person willing to give him or herself over as an expression of love for Christ? It’s easy to speak this way, butto live day-to-day according to the standards of Jesus is really what makes Pius X different. It’s only to the level this happens that PiusX accomplishes its mission. We have been abundantly blessed, and it is our privilege to be thankful for all of these gifts!Sincerely in Christ,Rev. Michael J. Morin (1978)1“Restore All Things in Christ”

Volume 4 PIUS CONNECTIONS Spring 2007Development NewsMarysue Burke Wendt (’71) and Richard Burke, Jr. (’66) Establish Scholarshipsto Benefit Pius X StudentsIn 2006, MarysueWendt called the DevelopmentOffice to inquireabout establishingendowed scholarships inmemory of her parents,Richard and DorothyBurke, Sr., and uncle,Robert Roach. Marysueand her brother, RichardBurke, Jr. liked the ideaof remembering lovedones while actively supportingPius X’s Catho-Richard & Dorothy Burke, Sr.lic education. “We wanted to remember our parents anduncle in such a way as to reflect their generosity and thevalue that was placed on Catholic education,” stated Marysue.“They are all a part of the history of Cathedral HighSchool and now their hard work will continue to impactcurrent and future students at Pius X High School.”The first scholarship they established was in memory oftheir parents, Richard and Dorothy Burke, Sr. It was theirintent to set up this fund to help students from St. Teresa’sparish who might not have the opportunity attend Pius Xbecause of tuition costs.Richard, Sr. & Dorothy were lifelong residents ofLincoln and graduates of Cathedral High School (1936 and1935). In 1942, they married in California, where he wasstationed with the U.S. Army before being sent to Europeduring World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star duringthat time.Upon returning home at the end of the war, Richard,Sr. and Dorothy settled into married life and raised theirfamily. As their parents before them sacrificed to provide aCatholic education, so too, did they. Their children, Richard,Jr. and Marysue, attended a Catholic elementary schooland both graduated from Pius X in 1966 and 1971.Richard, Sr. was a man who was sensitive to the plightof others. As the director of the Lincoln Housing Authority,he would often give grocery money out of his own pocketto help a client in need. He was especially proud of theHousing Authority facilities that provided safe, affordable, quality apartments for low-income elderly. He was alwaysespecially touched by the needs of children.Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother who spentmany hours volunteering at St. Teresa’s church and school. She enjoyed her work at Bryan Hospital and the opportunityto help those with loved ones who were hospitalized. The second scholarship Marysue and Richard, Jr. establishedwas the Robert T. Roach Scholarship in memory oftheir uncle. Robert was a lifelong resident of Lincoln andmember of St. Mary’s parish and Cathedral High Schoolclass of 1932. Great sacrifices were also made to send Robertand his three siblings to the Cathedral school becauseof the impact of the Great Depression, and their father hadpassed away, leaving their mother with four children.Upon graduating from Cathedral High, Robert attendedthe University of Nebraska where he received a bachelor’sdegree. He served in the U.S. Army during World War IIand was stationed in Adak in the Aleutian Islands, servingunder some of the harshest conditions of the war. He returnedto Lincoln afterward and went to work for the U.S.Postal Service. He retired after 30 years of service.“Bob was a quiet, gentle man always willing to lend ahand to others,” Marysue said. His wish was to be able tolive out his days in his family’s home. When he died at theage of 90 in January 2006, he had lived in the same housefor almost all of those 90 years.Pius X High School is grateful for the generosityand foresight of Marysue Wendt and her brother RichardBurke, Jr.Robert T. Volume 4 PIUS CONNECTIONS Spring 2007Development NewsAn Opportunity to Give BackAs Father Morin stated in his letter, there is a lot ofexcitement in the air as some of the capital improvementsstart to take place. New smartboards have been installed inevery classroom, six additional classrooms are being builtand the new Commons area is expected to be complete byAugust! While we can all agree that these new improvementsare a very good thing, it is the educators standing in frontour students each day who are truly defining the qualityCatholic education that Pius X offers. We are often faced with the question of how to retainour wonderful teachers without offering them highercompensation. We do our best to ensure that our facultyreceives competitive salaries, but our means to do so arelimited, especially since we strive to keep tuition low andparish assessments stable.Fortunately, a generous donor has recognized this needof ours and has presented us with the opportunity to receive$100,000 in matching grant money for a 2007-2008 teacherincentive pay program. This matching gift for teaching excellenceis an opportunity to make a difference in a BIGway. We urge everyone to please consider contributing towardthis matching gift fund. This is an opportunity to dosomething for the wonderful teachers we have at Pius XHigh School. Please contact Father Morin at 402-488-0931or the Development Office at 402-488-1046 if you wouldlike to help us meet our $100,000 goal. Volume 4 PIUS CONNECTIONS Spring 2007Development NewsNew IRA Law Accelerates Pledge Payments to the A Tradition of Faith CampaignMany individuals are taking advantage of the new Pension Protection Act when paying their pledges for Pius X’sA Tradition of Faith campaign. In order to help non-profit organizations like Pius X further our good work, Congressrecently changed the rules for charitable gifts from individual retirement accounts (IRAs).If you are age 70½ and older, the federal government now permits you to donate money from your IRA to a charitywithout claiming any increased income or paying additional taxes. These tax-free gifts could be $1,000, $10,000 or anyamount up to $100,000 in one year. However, this law will expire in 2008, so there is a short window of opportunity to takeadvantage of this giving opportunity! Here are three scenarios if you are age 70½ and olderto make an IRA gift directly to Pius X:1. You want to make a simple giftMost individuals have an IRA that has increased in value overthe years. The IRA rollover gift is an easy way to make a giftto Pius X while not increasing your taxable income. Simplycontact your IRA administrator and request that an amount betransferred.2. You would like to give morePerhaps you already have all of your charitable giving plannedout for the year. You itemize and have reached the federal limitfor tax deductions of 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. With an IRA rollover, you can transfer excess funds from yourIRA to Pius X and still make your regular gifts up to the 50percent level.3. You want to make a major giftYou want to make a major gift to Pius X High School or ourA Tradition of Faith campaign. Maybe you want to start ascholarship in your family’s name with the Pius X Foundation.Your IRA may be the largest asset you own. You can make amajor gift between $50,000 and $100,000 directly from yourIRA and not have to report any of it as income. For donors younger than 70½, you can still makefuture gifts from your IRA to Pius X High School! Here’s how:1. BequestDesignate Pius X as the eventual beneficiary of all or a portionof your IRA. For example, if you have three children, simplymake Pius X your “fourth child” and divide your IRA fourways.2. Testamentary IRA Charitable TrustYou can establish a charitable remainder trust as the beneficiaryof your IRA upon your death. Your trust can provide incometo children or grandchildren for a period of years. Thenit can distribute to Pius X.For more information contact our plannedgiving officer, Michael Henkenius, at402-488-2142 ext. 113 or emailmichael-henkenius@cdolinc.netor call the Pius X Development Office at402-488-1046.St. Pius X Legacy Society:Leaving a Legacy to Pius X High School Through Planned GivingOur St. Pius X Legacy Society is a group of individuals andcouples who have come forward and shared the wonderful news thatthey plan to remember Pius X with a planned gift and promote theidea of planned giving toward our school. Volume 4 PIUS CONNECTIONS Spring 2007Development NewsA Tradition of Faith Campaign UpdateThanks to the outstanding generosity of Catholics throughoutLincoln, the 50th anniversary campaign for Pius X High School,A Tradition of Faith, has been a tremendous success! The entireLincoln community is commended for its generous support!Overall, $15.96 million was pledged during the fund-raisingportion of the campaign, which is approximately $2.9 million overour goal.“It is extremely gratifying to see that we raised almost $16 million,”said Angie Muhleisen, co-chair of the campaign along withher husband, Dan. “We are truly grateful to everyone who madethis campaign so tremendously successful.”The A Tradition of Faith campaign seeks to strengthen thefaith and academic excellence of Pius X, build financial stabilityand provide for future needs through a master facilities plan. Fundsraised in the campaign will be used in the following ways:Clark JearyLand Acquisition$2,000,000 (15%)Overall Campaign Goal: $13 millionSupport of Lincoln Parishes$2,000,000 (15%)Enhancing the Pius X Foundation$6,000,000 (46%)Improvements to Physical Plant$3,000,000 (24%)First, campaign monies will enhance the Pius X Foundation,a growing endowment fund for the school. Income from the PiusX endowment fund will help to maintain affordable tuition as wellas generate income that ensures long-term financial stability forthe school. For the 2006-2007 academic year, the Foundation provided6.2 percent of the school’s operating budget. Increasing theendowment fund’s capital will enable the Foundation to provide agreater share of the Pius X High School budget while stabilizingparish assessments in the future.Second, the campaign will help provide some physical improvementsto the school. Construction of a new Commons areaand entrance on the southeast corner of the current facility, remodelingthe existing Commons area to accommodate the library/mediacenter and the creation of a dedicated science wing with newscience laboratories are part of the project. The existing stage inthe original gymnasium has been removed, making way for fournew classrooms: two on the first level and two more on the secondlevel. Construction is on schedule and is expected to be completein August.A third goal is to repay the Diocese of Lincoln for the purchaseof the Clark Jeary Retirement Center and the land on which it islocated (3.888 acres), directly east of the Pius X campus. The $2million earmarked for this effort will enable Pius X to grow inphysical size and enrollment numbers without sacrificing currentspace. The fourth endeavor is to provide support for the 14 parishes inthe Lincoln Deanery that participated in the campaign. Through asharing formula that was developed by a campaign clergy committee, parishes retain 28 percent of the funds raised among their ownparishioners, beginning with the first dollar raised. Once parishesreached their goals, they retain 90 percent of the funds raised overthat figure. The Internal Phase of the campaign, conducted primarily lastsummer, raised $6,834,636 which amounted to 114 percent of thephase goal.“We would like to thank the 167 individuals and corporationswho donated significant gifts,” Muhleisen said. “Their dedicationprovided increased motivation for the parish phase.”In the parish phase of the campaign, 14 parishes within the LincolnDeanery set out to raise $7 million. Pastors, along with theirindividual leadership teams, led the way as over 500 volunteersvisited more than 6,000 families. Over $5 million for Pius X HighSchool and another $4 million was raised for the parishes, exceedingthe Parish Phase goal by $2.1 million. The clergy committee is pleased with the outcome of the campaign.Father Liam Barr, Dean of the Lincoln Deanery and pastorof Saint Joseph parish said, “As clergy coordinator, I was mostimpressed by the leadership of the pastors and their lay leadership. This overwhelming support for our Catholic high school is a tributeto the parishes that they are truly stewardship parishes.”We would like to extend our utmost appreciation to the 3,873alumni, family, friends, parishioners and corporations of the PiusX community that made contributions toward the campaign. It is their support and dedication that allowed us to achieve thisextraordinary success. If you would like to contribute to the A Tradition of Faithcampaign, please contact the Pius X Development Office at402-488-1046.We’ve Exceeded Our Goal!$15,000,000--------------------$14,000,000--------------------$13,000,000--------------------$12,000,000--------------------$11,000,000--------------------$10,000,000--------------------$ 9,000,000---------------------$ 8,000,000---------------------$ 7,000,000---------------------$ 6,000,000---------------------$ 5,000,000---------------------$ 4,000,000---------------------$ 3,000,000---------------------$ 2,000,000---------------------$ 1,000,000---------------------We have surpassed our goalof $13 million with over$15.9 million in pledges andcash gifts!$15,000,000--------------------$14,000,000--------------------$13,000,000--------------------$12,000,000--------------------$11,000,000--------------------$10,000,000--------------------$ 9,000,000---------------------$ 8,000,000---------------------$ 7,000,000---------------------$ 6,000,000---------------------$ 5,000,000---------------------$ 4,000,000---------------------$ 3,000,000---------------------$ 2,000,000---------------------$ 1,000,000---------------------As of April 20, $4,507,202has been raised! Volume 4 PIUS CONNECTIONS Spring 2007SOADA Club Welcomes Dr. Tom OsbornePius X welcomed guest speaker, Dr. Tom Osborne, to anall-student assembly on Feb. 12, sponsored by the StudentsOrganized Against Drugs & Alcohol (SOADA) organization.SOADA’s goal is to make teens aware of the consequencesof drug and alcohol usage. Its members strive to be positive,drug-free role models for their peers. To help spread its message,SOADA invited Osborne to speak to the student body aboutthe effects of alcohol and substance abuse on today’s youth.Osborne was welcomed as not only an influential Universityof Nebraska football coach, but as a former U.S. House ofRepresentatives Congressman as well. In his congressionalterm, Osborne was instrumental in getting the STOP ActCommunity Excellence(Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking) passed, whichwas the first of its kind to address underage drinking. He andhis wife, Nancy, were also the founders of the TeamMatesMentoring Program in 1991 in an effort to provide support andencouragement to school-aged youth. Today, the program servesmore than 3,000 at-risk youth throughout Nebraska and Iowa, and has had a significant impact on student performance. In his presentation, Osborne spoke about the importanceof character and how one’s character is shaped by everydaychoices. He said that drug and alcohol use has been provento have negative effects on short-term memory and cognitiveabilities, thus having a lasting impact on character. He told students that there are two types of people – thosewho look at situations and ask what they can contribute, andthose who look at situations and ask what they can receive, and asked them which type they wanted to be. Osborne alsotold them that a truly educated person is someone who has abalance between intellectual, physical and spiritual dimensionsof life, and everything given to them is a gift.Osborne informed students that during his coaching years, his best players and teams in general, were the ones whomade the decision to abstain from drugs and alcohol. He alsoreminded them that making good choices and having goodcharacter takes discipline and determination and is not alwayseasy. We Want YOU to Join the Pius X Booster Club!Don’t miss out on supporting activities at Pius X for the 2007-2008 school year - join Pius X Booster Club!
