Tourist sites
The Baltata Natural Reservation enriches
Albena’s natural scenery. Having a
surface of 198 hectares it could be
considered a real delta, on the Batov
River. The reservation is host to over 250
different plant species, out of which 28
are protected by law, and 100 of them
are medicinal plants. Here you can find
over 300 species of unvertebrates, some
of them being indigenous to this area.
Here there are 183 different types of
birds, out of which 167 are protected by
law. and animals. Here you can admire
the rare osprey and the heron, just to
name a few of the magnificent birds
found in the reservation. The ’Calm
Nest’Castle in Balcic, found at 9 km
fromAlbena is famous for the its historical
importance and for the beautiful botanical
garden around it, containing an
impressive collection of cactus plants,
making it unique in all of Central and
Eastern Europe. The castle was the
favored residence of Queen Mary of
Romania. Know as the ’White City’,
Balcic was built on the site of the ancient
Greek city of Dionissopolis. The first
records mentioning the city are 2600
years old, Balcic is one of the main
attractions on the Black Sea coast, along
with Cape Caliacra and the city of
Nessebar
Cape Caliacra, found at 45 km from
Albena, pierces 2 km into the Black Sea,
having an altitude of 60 m. It is formed by
limestone cliffs and is an important part of
the ’Silver Coast’. In antiquity, Cape
Caliacra was named Tirisis and was the
second largest fortress after Tomis.
Nowadays you can find a museum which
contains a model of the old fortress.You
can still see the ruins of the old gate,
churches, fountains or communal baths.
From here you can belucky enough to
spot 3 species of dolphins from the Black
Sea and birds like the sea gull. 11
