After many years, Walter Ludlow's son, Arthur Ludlow discovered the shell inthe family shed and brought it into his home. Mr. Ludlow was about thirteenyears <strong>of</strong> age when the Astra was docked in Joe Batt's Arm. Like most youngboys, he loved to explore the ships and meet the people on board. He clearlyremembers the friendly Portuguese cook on the Astra and recalls the richsmell <strong>of</strong> c<strong>of</strong>fee grounds that came from the ship's galley. To this day, the smell<strong>of</strong> fresh c<strong>of</strong>fee reminds him <strong>of</strong> the 'Astra'.Mr. Ludlow kept the shell as a reminder <strong>of</strong> the Astra and the people he metduring the salt fish trade.
