Indian <strong>Island</strong>sIndian <strong>Island</strong>s was probably named when settlers found Beothuck Indiansliving there. There are two main islands, Eastern Indian <strong>Island</strong>s and WesternIndian <strong>Island</strong>s. There were three communities on the Eastern <strong>Island</strong>. Thesewere Eastern Cove, Indian <strong>Island</strong> Tickle and Chaulkies Cove. The Western<strong>Island</strong> was also known as Perry's <strong>Island</strong>. There were three churches and threeschools on Indian <strong>Island</strong>s.The people <strong>of</strong> Indian <strong>Island</strong>s fished for a living. However, there were nosheltered harbours on the island and this caused many problems, especiallywhen there was a gale <strong>of</strong> wind and high tides. In fact, many people left theislands in 1921 when a vicious storm destroyed their premises and gear. Thiswas known as the 'Great Wash Out'. The remaining families left the <strong>Island</strong>when the Resettlement Program was <strong>of</strong>fered.Three little girls on Indian <strong>Island</strong>s.Houses in background were movedto Seldom and Stag Harbour.
