Mr. William Donahue and his family were the last permanent residents toleave the islands. Their final winter on the island was in 1937. Like othersettlers, they wintered in Joe Batt's Arm and returned to the island during thehunting and fishing seasons. Most of the other settlers were from Fogo Island,Change Islands, Carmanville, Boyd's Cove and surrounding areas. Indian IslandsIndian Islands was probably named when settlers found Beothuck Indiansliving there. There are two main islands, Eastern Indian Islands and WesternIndian Islands. There were three communities on the Eastern Island. Thesewere Eastern Cove, Indian Island Tickle and Chaulkies Cove. The WesternIsland was also known as Perry's Island. There were three churches and threeschools on Indian Islands.The people of Indian Islands fished for a living. However, there were nosheltered harbours on the island and this caused many problems, especiallywhen there was a gale of wind and high tides. In fact, many people left theislands in 1921 when a vicious storm destroyed their premises and gear. Thiswas known as the 'Great Wash Out'.
