GorgenMy Brothers,I am going to tell you a story about a former beauty queen. Shewas Miss Wichita. Years had passed since she held this covetedcrown and had long retired from the notoriety that came with thetitle. In a conversation with her neighbor, she announced to him thathe was living next to a former, real live beautyqueen, and that after she was crowned MissWichita, she declared, “I will devote my entirereign as Miss Wichita to bringing an end toworld hunger, and to the creation of a peacefulearth for every man, woman and child.” Herneighbor asked, “How long were you MissWichita?” She responded, “One year, and bythe time I got through opening new supermarkets,I only had a few weeks left to work onhunger and world peace.” If you are a moviebuff, you might recognize this quote. It comesfrom the movie Erin Brockovich.I hope this little story brought a smile to yourface. I think all of us can relate to the beautyKenneth C. GorgenGrand Lecturerqueen in our story. We all have plans and goals for ourselves, butas time passes and interruptions appear, these plans seemed to fallby wayside. I can assure you that I speak from experience.Evidence of procrastination or just being too busy with othertasks can also interrupt some of the important work that should behappening in our lodges. During the months of December andJanuary the reins of leadership are being passed. A new Master istaking over or maybe the same Master is continuing with a newterm. In any case, the lodge is starting with new programming andhopefully some new ideas to bring excitement to the lodge.Installation night or afternoon takes on an atmosphere of gaietyand promise. Plans are spelled out in the program for the evening, and the hopes of an exciting year are at hand. I have been fortunateto be able to take part in a few of the installations, and enjoyseeing the new officers take over the leadership of the lodge. However, I also see very little variation in programming from lodgeto lodge; stated meetings on the second and fourth or first andthird are assumed. An active lodge will be sure to include severalevents which might consist of a Friend’s Night, Table Lodge,Ladies at the Table, pancake breakfast, spaghetti supper, etc.The new Masonic year begins, and as it progresses, time flies asstated meetings pass, events take place, new members are broughtin, and possibly a few, maybe even several, degrees have takenplace, but has the lodge improved in its ritual and floor work?Remember our beauty queen. Let’s paraphrase her confession,“By the time our lodge got through with stated meetings andevents, there wasn’t any time left to practice and work on the ritual.”.If you want something to happen, it must be in the plan. Asyour Grand Lecturer, I notice that something is usually missing inlodge programming. There appears to be no time for the ritual. As I have stated in the past, the ritual is what makes us a uniqueorganization, and yet, it is not planned for in our lodge programming. It is assumed, if not forgotten, until we are confronted witha degree. It would be great to see practice degree nights scheduled.Maybe plan to have a skilled brother demonstrate good rodwork for lodge education. Include your date for the School ofInstruction in the lodge calendar. What about planning to learn anew part? It would be prudent and a great asset for a lodge to haveseveral brothers, new officers, or repeat officers skilled in the ritual. This would put an end to those fire drill scrambles to fill out adegree team for a degree night. The lodges that have many candidatesgoing through could schedule degree nights in the installationprogram and work with the candidates to be ready to meetthat schedule. To sum it up, the ritual needs to be part of lodge programming. We do not assume that the events will just happen, so let’s notassume that proficiency in the ritual work will magically cometogether. Include ritual and degree work in your lodge planning. Infact, I would encourage it to be one of the top priorities on yourlist of things to get done during the year. Plan for it and make ithappen. My best wishes to all the new Masters and their corps of officersfor 2011, much success in learning and exercising your ritualprowess. And don’t forget to register for the 2011 DegreeCompetition to show off the fruits of your hard work. Then we willall see more Light.Feedback and questions are always welcome. Contact Grand Lecturer KenGorgen at jkgorgen@att.net or 262-691-0859Grand Master Joseph B. Each degree is followedby a celebration that is called a“White Table” similar to our tablelodges. The lodges have very fewEntered Apprentices that do notfinish their degrees to become aMaster Mason. The EnteredApprentices and Fellowcraftsattend lodge regularly and areeager to learn more and advanceto the next degree.During open lodge EnteredApprentices must always sit inthe North, Fellowcrafts in theSouth and Master Masons maysit on either side. The Hungarian Lodges do nothave Deacons. In the East theyhave the Master and Secretary aswe have but at the right of theMaster is the Speaker. It is theSpeaker’s duty to supervise andsee that the Lodge follows thecode. They have a Major Wardenin the North and a Minor Wardensitting in the South. The candlesare placed one each on the east, north and south sides of the altar. When entering you greet first theMajor Warden, then the MinorWarden, and, after the ritualsteps pertaining to the degree thelodge will be opened in, yougreet the Master. The lodge has one steward thattakes care of the table. Holding the righthand horizontally under the chin.If you are doing a lengthy presentation,or for some reason youneed both hands, you ask permissionfrom the Master to makethe presentation “not in sign”.During a presentation discussioneach Mason may speak onlyonce and often for a limitedamount of time.In Hungary some lodges meetweekly, some twice a month andsome monthly. In Germany theymeet once per week with onemeeting a month being a “ritualmeeting” or regular meeting andthe others are more of a socialgathering which includesMasonic related presentationsand friends are often invited. When you become a Mason inHungary you receive a pair ofgloves and one extra glove. Theextra glove is given to your wife,if something happens to you andyour widow needs help shebrings the glove back to the lodgefor assistance. During the yearswhen Masonry was forbidden inHungary the Brothers fromAustria and Germany found waysto send money to help the widows.Scottish Rite and York Rite existbut there are no other Masonicappendant bodies in Hungary. There are special meetings of thelodges that include the wives andchildren. There is no posting and ritualwork is presented with the bookopen. The lodge dues would be equalto $200 per year in U.S. dollars.Members that are active butunable to pay dues are carried bythe lodge. Members that are notactive and do not pay are suspended.Donations do not exist.People that come from aCommunist background do notpay anything extra, they only paywhat is required. It is their way oflife. In 1989 when Freemasonrywas allowed the lodges had noaprons. The Masons that hadaprons, kept them as they werepresented to them and theseaprons belong to the individual. The Masons of Sweden,Germany and England donatedmoney to help the lodges purchaseaprons.Aprons are presented to theindividual and are worn throughouttheir life. The aprons havenothing to do with a degree oroffice held. Entered Apprenticeshowever, do wear white aprons.Jewels designate membership ina lodge and the office held.Sometimes if a new Mason’sfather is deceased he may be presentedwith his father’s apron.Gloves are always worn in lodge, the only time they are removed isto handle money. In some lodgesin Germany everyone wears atop hat, not just the Master. The knocks at the door andraps with the gavel are differentdepending on which degree thelodge is working in.In Austria and Hungary thelodges have a carpet called aTapis with Masonic symbols onit. The carpet is put down withthe three candles in the corners. The Brethren are not allowed tostep on the carpet and can onlymove around the carpet in aclockwise motion. The GrandMaster is allowed to walk on thecarpet when he comes to visit alodge. When the Master entershe comes in under an arch ofsteel formed by the Brethren withswords the lodge has for suchpurposes. The Bible is placed inthe East in front of the Master. The Master opens and closes theBible. The candles are lit by thetwo Wardens and the Master. The tiler has a sword, but thereare no rods. The Brethren have passports, which contain their degree datesand the name of their lodge. Thispassport is used to gain admissionwhen visiting another lodge. The Masons of Hungary arevery proud of their Masonic heritageand work very hard to keepFreemasonry alive for future generations.Photos submittedby Bro. He waspresented with his Master’s hat, which Graham noted was abowler. He said the selection wasnot done casually, saying thebowler was invented in earlyEngland for hunters who werealways getting their hats knockedoff while hunting. The huntersasked a hat maker to come upwith a hat that would not easilybe dislodged while in the countryside and would also provide someprotection. The bowler, said Graham, waswhat the hat maker came upBro. John Howard, the Tiler of the River Falls Lodge, isshown with a rather unique gift from his friend PriscillaShoeneck. She presented him with a handmade fishing tipup that is attached to a glass. Whenever he needs a refill allhe has to do is push a switch and a little red flag pops up,just like the big winter fishing gear. Bro. Howard is an avidfishing enthusiast.with. Head wear in early Englandwas a sign of ones station in life, but the bowler soon became preferredattire for the commonman. With this in mind, Bro.Graham selected the bowler forhis year in the East. Bro. Grahamsaid the bowler represents theequality of the brotherhood sayingwe are all on one level inFreemasonry. After a fine dinner, the membersparticipated in a traditionalgift exchange. The 2011 River Falls Lodge No.109 officer photo will be publishedin the February issue.Bro.
