The Centers for Medicaid 

and Medicare Services (CMS) 

announced that it will cut 

Medicare reimbursement rates 

for hospice, forcing many 

hospice providers across the 

country to either significantly 

scale back the care they provide 

to terminally ill patients or to 

shut their doors altogether. 

The final rule, published in 

The Federal Register, became 

effective October 1, 2008. 

“Let’s be clear, the 

Administration’s cuts will 

seriously hurt the most vulnerable 

– the terminally ill,” 

said J. Donald Schumacher, 

president and CEO of the 

National Hospice and 

Palliative Care Organization 

(NHPCO), which represents 

4,000 hospices nationwide. 

“By issuing this rule, CMS is 

taking an end run around 

Congress and its longstanding 

role protecting hospice.”

Palliative Care Program Begins 

New from Independent Health 

and Caring Hearts Home Care 

A new program, created by Independent 

Health and Caring Hearts Home Care, is 

making a positive impact on individuals 

with serious or chronic illness. The Home 

Connections Palliative Care Program, 

an affiliate of The Center for Hospice & 

Palliative Care, provides services to help 

patients and their families with independence 

and comfort in the home. 

Patient services include: 

• Pain and symptom management to 

improve quality of life 

• Education about their disease 

• Living with chronic illness and 

developing goals of care 

• Strategies for coping with side effects 

of their disease 

• Assistance with Advance Care 

Planning and decision making 

Home Connections works in partnership with the patient’s physician and 

other health care team members to provide coordinated care across settings that 

is tailored to patient and family needs. The program also offers assistance with 

Hospice Buffalo Recognizes 

Veterans for Their Service

In honor of Veterans Day, Hospice Buffalo teams distributed more than 120 

veterans pins and certificates to area veterans being cared for by Hospice Buffalo. 

“We wanted to honor our veterans for serving our country,” said Bill Finn, 

president and CEO of Hospice Buffalo. “This is our second year of recognizing 

our veterans with a special pin and award certificate. We have been working at 

the state and local level to help ensure that veterans and their families receive 

high quality services through the end of life.”

Graceful Passages – The Hospice 

Journals, a feature documentary 

film produced with Hospice Buffalo, 

will air on Thinkbright Television, 

on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 at 

9:00 p.m. Thinkbright airs locally 

on Time Warner Channel 21 and 

on digital channel 17.3 for those 

that have digital television. 

Graceful Passages offers an inside 

look into the poignant world of 

Hospice care as seen through the 

eyes of caregivers, patients and staff. 

The feature film was created by Jon 

R. Hand of Buffalo, an independent 

filmmaker who spent nearly 2 years 

with Hospice patients and staff. 

The remarkable film follows several 

patients and families into hospitals, 

homes, assisted living centers and 

Hospice inpatient settings. 

Thinkbright is operated by public 

television station WNED in Buffalo, 

New York and focuses on educators, 

students, families and members of the 

community. The channel operates 

“24/7” and features an innovative 

prime-time line-up devoted to 

themes. For example, Sunday 

evenings on Thinkbright are devoted 

to Family & Education.

Raising the Bar 

For the past 30 years, Hospice Buffalo has 

provided exceptional care and support to more 

than 40,000 patients and families. Hospice 

Buffalo has touched our friends, neighbors and 

our own families when serious illness becomes 

life threatening, and cure is no longer realistic. 

Hospice became a movement to change the way 

people live with illness, and to bring comfort and 

understanding to those touched by loss. The pioneering spirit that propelled 

Hospice Buffalo as one of the first hospices in the United States now exists 

in a world class program seeking new and innovative approaches to care for 

persons with advanced disease. 

Today, Hospice Buffalo is one of the most unique programs in the country. 

Our passion remains strong and we are committed that no-one need live 

in pain, that all have the right to control their care, and that healthy and 

honest communication is a right, not an option. Patients have many choices 

today when considering the prospect of living with advanced disease. And 

often, hospice presents a remarkable option for living fully, comfortably, 

and at home. Indeed, a recent journal article highlighted the fact that 

patients enrolled in hospice care live 30 days longer than similar patients 

without hospice care. Hospice truly is about hope. 

In 2008, we opened the St. John Baptist/Hospice Buffalo House, the only 

hospice-faith based partnership of this type in the country. Our Caring 

Hearts Perinatal Program has received national attention as a critical support 

for mothers whose pregnancy will not result in a healthy child. Hospice 

Buffalo employs 10 physicians with more hospice and palliative care certified 

physicians than any hospice in the North East. Our program has the largest 

free-standing inpatient unit in the North East, and has routinely surpassed 

state and national standards for quality care at end of life. 

Hospice Buffalo is raising the bar as we continue to set new standards 

of care for Western New York and the nation. We are actively partnering 

with the University at Buffalo and our hospital partners to integrate 

palliative care training and service into acute care. Our partnerships with 

insurance providers are forging new venues for palliative care at home and 

pre-hospice care for persons with chronic disease, avoiding hospitalization 

and focusing on quality and comfort as disease advances. 

We believe that hospice can care for persons during the last year of life, 

not the last week. We believe hospice embraces hope and comfort, creating 

meaning and hope in a difficult time. We believe hospice is the way we 

would want to live; especially when we know it can add tremendous quality

Bethany Miller leads a Life Rhythms music therapy program offered by Hospice Buffalo 

at assisted living residences and nursing homes. 

QUALITY OF LIFE 

Hospice Music Therapy Program 

On any given day, each of Hospice’s five music therapists can be found 

doing what they do best – improving our patients’ quality of life. 

Our board-certified music therapists are members of Hospice’s 

interdisciplinary team and are involved in assessing the strengths and 

needs of each client, developing a treatment plan, and implementing 

customized music interventions. Music therapists use both instrumental 

and vocal music techniques. 

Within our partner skilled nursing facilities, Alanna Ardito, LCAT, 

MT-BC; Bethany Miller, MT-BC; and Theresa Hoffman, MT-BC facilitate 

Life Rhythms music-making sessions for patients with various dementias. 

Each patient, rhythm instrument in hand, contributes to the creation of 

an interactive ensemble through song and improvisation. A number of 

families have noted that this is often the only hour of the day during 

which their loved one is alert and engaged. “In this setting, music therapy 

provides much needed sensory and cognitive stimulation, which increases 

or maintains a patient’s level of physical, mental, and social/emotional 

functioning,” states Abigail Unger LCAT, MT-BC. 

Abigail can be found facilitating individual, family, and group sessions 

with Hospice patients who reside in assisted living facilities or group 

homes for individuals with developmental disabilities. “Therapeutic 

interventions are implemented that address psychosocial issues, pain and 

symptom management, anxiety and relaxation, well-being, and expression. 

Through active engagement in music therapy, our patients experience 

maximized mental stimulation, increased interpersonal connections and a 

sense of belonging, decreased distress, as well as supported activity functioning 

and overall community building,” explains Abigail. 

As part of our Essential Care for Children team, Julie Palmer, MT-BC 

works with our pediatric patients and families. Music, one of the many joys 

of childhood, is a much needed distraction for these sick children, helping 

to dispel anxiety and instill a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic 

and stressful time. Abigail notes that, “Through their active participation 

in music therapy, Hospice’s pediatric patients are given the opportunity to 

express themselves through an accessible and appropriate medium.”

Hospice’s music therapists also 

provide services to our Home Care 

patients. Whether sessions are held 

within facilities or homes, music 

therapists design individualized care 

to address specific patient needs 

within their overall care plan. As 

part of our team approach, music 

therapists play an essential role in 

Hospice’s mission to provide optimal 

care when it is needed the most. 

Music therapists are valuable 

members of Hospice’s interdisciplinary 

team approach to patient care. 

Last year our music therapists 

conducted approximately 1,500 

music therapy sessions. Unfortunately, 

music therapy is not covered by 

Medicare or third party insurance 

and must be covered through 

fundraising efforts. 

The music therapists have a 

long wish list of items they would 

like for the program. Needs range 

from instruments such as maracas, 

bells and hand drums, to equipment 

for transporting and storing 

instruments, sheet music, and a 

portable sound system. If you would

WHAT HOSPICE HAS DONE FOR MY FAMILY 

My dad has a chronic lung and heart condition. We were in the hospital 

at least once a week for either seizures or shortness of breath. He no 

longer drives and it was taking its toll on me and my sister, and mostly 

my mom and dad. She didn't know what to do or where to turn. 

They were not getting any answers. 

I recently started a new position at UB Family Medicine and came in 

to tour the Hospice campus with my 3rd year students. I saw the 

brochure on the above disease and gave it to my mom in the hospital. 

She called the next day and hospice came out. 

It has only been 2 weeks and already the quality of both my dad’s and 

my mom’s life has changed dramatically due to hospice. They are kind, 

knowledgeable and are giving them answers and options and most of all 

helping them at a time when they need it most. The advertisements are 

right – it’s never too early too call. Now we know someone really cares 

about what happens to my dad and is trying to make whatever time he 

has left the best it can possibly be!! I cannot thank you enough for all 

you do. I now feel peace knowing that someone cares about my dad and 

will do everything they can to make sure he is comfortable. Thank you 

from the bottom of my heart!!!!!

Hospice Buffalo Recognizes Veterans for their Service, Continued from page 1. 

“Many Americans are unaware that more than 50,000 veterans die 

each month; that’s roughly 28 percent of all deaths in the United States,” 

commented Don Schumacher, president and CEO of the National 

Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). “Ensuring that all 

veterans receive compassionate care of the highest quality at the end of 

their lives is a responsibility we owe those who have served their country.” 

During this period of historically high deaths of veterans, there continues 

to be variability in the care delivered at the end of life. Nearly 40 percent 

of enrolled veterans live in areas that are considered rural, where community 

hospices and VA palliative care programs are often not readily available. 

On any given night, more than 200,000 veterans are without shelter and 

lack basic healthcare. Ensuring that all veterans receive compassionate, 

quality care at the end-of-life is a priority of NHPCO and the Department 

of Veterans Affairs Hospice and Palliative Care Program. 

Hospice care is part of the basic medical benefits package for veterans 

enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Hospice services 

are also covered by Medicare, Medicaid, most managed care organizations, 

private insurance plans, and HMOs. However, as is true with a majority of 

the American public, most veterans don’t know that these options exist. 

“It’s vital that we work closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs 

(VA) Medical Center, veteran service groups and community organizations to 

raise awareness of the unique needs of veterans at the end of life and improve 

access to hospice and palliative care at all sites and in all settings,” said Finn.

With Fond Memories 

Former BMW Master Technician and Hospice Buffalo patient, David 

Williams of Kenmore, lived life to the fullest. Although he was diagnosed 

with stage IV colon cancer in April 2006, he was determined to live and 

was able to remain at home under Hospice Buffalo’s care for more than 

two years. 

David drove himself to the Boulevard Mall each week and enjoyed 

walking the mall for exercise. Last winter, he converted his bike to a 

street-legal pedal assisted vehicle. “It gets 150 miles a gallon,” Dave smiled 

as he told Hospice staff about his latest project. “It took me five to six 

hours to put it together. The first time I took it out, I rode it for three 

hours because I had fun riding it.” 

Dave accomplished his life’s objective when he was able to celebrate 

his son’s wedding on September 20, 2008. “It was his BIG goal to make 

it to my wedding and much beyond,” said newlywed Brian Williams. 

“Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after on October 9, but was able 

to reflect to many how much of a wonderful time he had at the wedding.” 

Dave died peacefully in the Hospice Inpatient Unit on Oct. 9, 2008. He 

is survived by his three children, Amanda, Brian, and Meghan.

The Society’s annual letter-writing evening, the kickoff of the Annual 

Appeal, takes place at the Hospice Mitchell Campus in late October. 

“This event gives our enthusiastic volunteers the opportunity to come 

together, be updated on the latest happenings in our organization, and 

write notes to more than 2,000 past donors. The continuing financial 

support of our mission is critically important to those patients and families 

in our care,” added Doug. Beth continued, “Last year, was a very successful 

and fortunate year for the Signature Society. The annual event raised 

over $275,000, the most in its 14 year history. Since the Signature 

Society’s inception in 1994, more than $2,611,000 has been raised by 

this dedicated group of volunteers.” 

Currently, more than 600 patients a day depend on the various 

programs and services of The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care. 

Hospice Buffalo, Life Transitions Center, the Hospice Buffalo Houses 

at the Mitchell Campus and at St. John Baptist, and Essential Care for 

Children all benefit from the unrestricted funds raised during the annual 

appeal. Doug & Beth summarized their feelings by saying, “We want to 

ensure the positive impact that Hospice has made in our community for 

another 30 years.”

gathered for this year’s Walk to Remember. 

We couldn’t have asked for a more 

beautiful day to memorialize our babies 

lost to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, 

stillbirth, or early infant death. Some 

would say our sunny warm weather 

was a result of “Mother Nature” but we 

know better: it was all of our angels 

making sure the day was perfect. Over 

600 family members and friends walked 

to pay tribute to our babies.

The following is a letter we received from a parent of one of 

Caring Hearts Perinatal patients. The Caring Hearts Perinatal 

Program is offered to expectant parents whose baby is diagnosed 

with a life-threatening condition before birth. The unique service is a 

program of The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care and is supported 

through a grant from The Children’s Guild. 

Grief can be a heavy burden that leadens every movement, every thought and 

every decision. However, grief is also a lens. It clarifies what is most important in 

life, magnifies the beauty of someone now lost and sharpens our sense of what has 

been found. 

When people ask about my daughter my responses most often confuse them. 

They are horrified by the story but perplexed by how calmly I tell the details, how I 

could cherish such moments. On May 18th of this year at 11:07 pm my first child 

was born, a daughter named Isabel. I held her, kissed her, dressed her and told her 

I loved her. At 1:05 am she died in the cradle of my arms. I was 34 weeks into my 

pregnancy but I knew that my baby was going to die at my 17-week appointment 

when she was diagnosed with a congenital kidney condition that was “incompatible 

with life.” 

Some said that I wasn’t given a choice. However, I did make a choice. I made it 

over and over for fifteen weeks. There was never a doubt that I would carry Isabel 

for as long as I could. She was safe within me; life outside was dangerous. She was 

still our dream come true for we had struggled to conceive her. The choice I could 

make was how I was going to carry her. Supported by the counselors of the Caring 

Hearts Perinatal Hospice program, we made the choice to carry her without dread 

in our hearts. We chose to open ourselves to loving her completely and cherishing 

every squirm, not knowing which one would be her last. We chose to live as fully as 

we could and leave most of the hard work of grief for later. There was a kernel of 

hope that the doctors were wrong but we prepared ourselves for losing her at the 

same time. 

We created a birth plan detailing our wishes for the day of her delivery and the 

hospital was notified in advance. Plans were made with the funeral director. 

Decisions were made regarding further testing. At the same time, we continued to 

work, meet with friends, pay the bills, grocery shop….all the ordinary tasks of life 

during an extraordinary time. We were keenly aware that this was the only time we 

would have with our daughter. We counted each moment, not as winding down to 

a terrible ending, but counting each moment as a memory to hold onto forever. 

The night of her birth was the most joyful moment of our lives for we finally had 

a chance to hold our daughter and share her with our families. Two hours seemed 

an eternity, a luxury of time we did not dare hope for. The curtain of grief was 

drawn when we were told she had passed. At the same time we clearly saw how

To talk about Isabel is to tell a story of seeming paradoxes. Our experience 

strengthened and humbled us. Our lives were shattered and yet made whole. There 

is a peaceful center in the eye of grief. It’s only by going through the most turbulent 

part of the storm that one can find that place though. 

On October 12th I will join others in A Walk to Remember in honor of 

the 850,000 babies who die each year from miscarriage, stillbirth or early infant 

death. We walk in grief but we are not broken by it. We walk, transformed by 

our losses, but all is not lost.

The 14th Annual ARTVOICE Mardi Gras, February 24, 2009 

The ARTVOICE Mardi Gras turns Buffalo’s Allentown, Elmwood and 

Chippewa district into its own French Quarter. The celebration includes 

more than 45 clubs and bars with various bands playing at the different 

venues. All proceeds will benefit the Hospice Foundation. The event 

kicks off at 5:00 p.m. with a motorcade parade traveling down Elmwood, into

White House and CMS want to 

cut one of the most cost effective 

programs, and a program with 

some of the highest quality outcomes 

under Medicare?” 

According to an independent 

2007 Duke University study, 

hospice saves Medicare an average 

of $2,300 per patient, amounting 

to a total savings of about $2 

billion a year. 

Considered to be the model 

for high-quality care for terminally 

ill patients, hospice focuses on 

caring, not curing. And, in most 

cases, is provided in the patient’s 

home. Hospice professionals are 

experts in providing pain and 

symptom management to the 

dying. Additional services include 

emotional and spiritual support 

to patients and their family caregivers 

as well as caregiver training. 

More than 1.3 million dying 

Americans received care from the 

nation’s hospice providers last year, 

a number that continues to rise. 

A Gallup poll found that nine 

out of 10 Americans, if faced with 

a terminal illness, would want to 

remain in their homes and receive 

the services that hospice provides. 

In fact, more than 80 percent of 

hospice care in the U.S. is provided 

in the home. And patient satisfaction 

with hospice approaches 100 

percent as shown by data collected 

from family caregivers.

Camp Blue Skies Provides Fun 

While Helping Children Cope 

“From the moment your child arrives at Camp Blue Skies they are made 

to feel welcome,” said Jim Grande, LCSW, coordinator of Children’s 

Programs at Life Transitions Center, Inc. “They meet dedicated staff and 

other children who know exactly what it is like to experience the death 

of a loved one.” 

Camp Blue Skies is an annual camp for children between the ages 

of 7 and 16 which is run under the auspices of Hospice Buffalo. It is held 

each year at picturesque Cradle Beach Camp in Angola, New York. Camp 

Blue Skies is staffed by a team of professional grief counselors and trained 

volunteers. The children’s caregivers get a restful overnight break during 

which they can relax; knowing their child is having fun and is being well 

taken care of. If you are interested in Cradle Beach for your child or would 

like to volunteer for our 2009 overnight camp, please call Jim Grande at

more than 90 members of Congress 

has sent a letter to Health and

Leavitt, in opposition to the

Thank You Ethan Allen! 

A family room at the Mary and Ralph Wilson, Jr. Hospice Inpatient Unit 

in Cheektowaga received a beautiful makeover courtesy of Ethan Allen Interior Design Center. 

The makeover was the top prize in the 2nd Annual Ethan Allen Community Challenge 

held last May. 

Ethan Allen interior designers, Lori Brennan (left) and Robin Trzaska, 

re-designed the Hospice Inpatient Unit family room making it more welcoming 

and comfortable for Hospice families and visitors.

Many contributors help Hospice provide its excellent and essential services to patients and their families in our community 

through tribute gifts. Memorial gifts offer a meaningful expression of one’s sympathy, love and respect when remembering family 

members and friends. We are particularly grateful to those who designate the Hospice Foundation of W.N.Y. as beneficiary of 

memorials encouraging donations be made in memory of their loved one. Appropriate notification and acknowledgment of all 

memorial gifts is sent to both the family and the donor. Unrestricted gifts of this kind help Hospice continue to provide special 

care and support to patients with advanced illness and their families.

Mission Statement: 

The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care serves individuals 

with serious illness, and their families and caregivers through 

a continuum of care spanning the course of illness and 

bereavement. The Center’s specially-trained professionals, 

support staff and volunteers assist individuals to make choices 

about their care, support those who are grieving and educate 

the professional and lay communities about end-of-life issues. 

How To Access Our Services 

Affiliates of The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care are governed 

by the State of New York and most services are covered by a majority 

of insurance companies, including Medicare/Medicaid. 

Referring to the The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care is 

simple and convenient. Just call (716) 686-8000. An intake specialist 

will work with the patient, the family, and attending physician 

to initiate services and establish an individual plan of care. 

The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care consists of the
