Tronic Trafo
Electronic transformers
Insta offer a range of electronic transformers in
many sizes to suit the needs of a spectrum of
applications like architecture illumination, medical
technology, furniture industry and illuminated
advertising.
Insta Tronic transformers stand out due to their
high quality workmanship, wide load range of
50 - 200 watt, electronic short circuit protection,
temperature protection with automatic power
reduction.
Fields of use
Luminaires with low-voltage halogen lamps are
designed for a power consumption of 5 W to 100
W and an operation voltage of 12 V. Thus a transformer
must convert the mains voltage of 230 V
into an alternating voltage of 12 V. Here Insta
offers a wide range of electronic transformers
(also called converter or switched-mode power
supply) under the name Tronic Trafo.
To compensate mains voltage fluctuations, electronic
transformers are designed for a secondary
nominal voltage of 11.7 V. Thus, even in case of
mains voltage and load fluctuations a lamp voltage
of 12 V is not exceeded.
www.insta.de
x
Electronic short circuit protection
If the current which is taken from the transformer
exceeds a limit value, a protection switch
blocks the function much faster than a fuse and
thus prevents further current output of the transformer.
When the fault in the system has been
removed, the transformer automatically restarts
its normal operation.
Electronic over-temperature protection
A Tronic transformer is capable of protecting the
circuit if the temperature or loading is exceeded.
This protects the system integrity and avoids
defects.
If the Tronic transformer is over-loaded, it cannot
dissipate the generated heat because of unfavourable
fitting conditions or it is heated up by the
connected lamps, the temperature in the transformer
rises too high. Such a high temperature
would shorten the service life of the transformer.
Therefore a protection circuit measures the temperature
of the transformer. If the limit temperature
is exceeded, it automatically dims down the
connected lamps. Thus overhea ting and defects
to the devices can be avoided. If an automatic
dimming of the lamps is no ticed, cooler operating
conditions for the transformer should be provided
in the long run. By measuring the temperature
of the tc-point marked in black on the labelling
of the trans former, the faultless operation of
the Tronic transformer with regard to overheating
can be checked. If, after operation over several
hours, the temperature stays below the admissible
printed value, the device is fitted perfectly.
If after some hours of operation the temperature
remains below the admissible value printed
on the transformer, the transformer is perfectly
installed.
Tested quality
Insta Tronic transformers bear the test and safety
marks of many European countries. This guarantees
the user a widely acknowledged quality of
the product.
Fitting conditions
Since the Tronic transformers of Insta bear the
MM mark, it is admissible to install them into furniture
without knowing the grade of fire resistance
of the furniture material. A minimum
space, however, depending on the type of the
device and indicated in the fitting instructions,
must be provided around the transformer.
x
y

Operating conditions for Tronic transformers
The following installation rules should be observed by users of Tronic transformers in order to
guarantee technically faultless operation.
Length of the secondary lead must not exceed 2 m
The secondary lead must not be laid parallel to mains leads in order to prevent radio interferences
For installation in lights please check the temperature at the tc-point
Provide for sufficient space between lamp and transformer so that the connected lamps cannot heat
up the transformer
Do not switch Tronic transformers together with inductive loads (e.g. fluorescent lamps
with conventional ballasts), as otherwise spikes could damage the transformers
If the 230 V mains is troubled with spikes, over-voltage protection modules have to be installed
If Tronic transformers are fitted in lights of protection class I, an exceeding of the radio interference
limit values can be compensated by installation of an EMC-module
For dimming of Tronic transformers only use Tronic dimmers or universal dimmers
of the companies Insta, Berker, GIRA or Jung
Additional product-specific installation rules that are attached to the transformers must strictly
be observed
Controls
The brightness of modern light sources can be
controlled by different technical processes and
the pertaining products. Insta offer components
for all three processes. They are used depending
on the application. To help the development engineer
make sure that in his constructions the dimmer
matches the lamp load, Insta offer support in
the choice of the suitable process and the corresponding
products.
Control light
by means of dimmers or dimming systems
All components of this product family reduce the
supply voltage of the connected lamps and, if
necessary, of their ballasts. Dimming is effected
by reducing the mains current. The dimmers can
either be operated manually, e.g. by rotary or
push-button elements or by digital commands
sent on the dimmer via KNX or instafunk communication.
This dimming solution is very often used with
low-voltage and high-voltage halogen lamps or
ordinary tungsten filament lamps. Even motors,
e.g. of fans, can be »dimmed«, i.e. their power
consumption can be reduced.
The technical features of the dimmers vary according
to the relevant application.
www.insta.de
Possible applications
Creation of defined brightness levels for different kinds of work
Energy saving by adapting the lighting to the natural brightness conditions
Energy saving by time or event-dependent lighting control
Avoiding of disturbing effects of glare at the place of work
For lighting control different working principles
are available. Which one of them is
used depends on the requirements and the
relevant application.
Control light by means of
analog 1-10 V control technology
It allows control of larger lighting systems and
only low control currents have to be processed.
Dimming is effected through control of electronic
ballasts (EVG) for fluorescent lamps or lowvoltage
halogen lamps, each with 1-10 V control
input. All connected lamps are set to one common
brightness level by a 1-10 V control unit.
Operation of the control unit can also be effected
manually by rotary or push-button elements or by
digital commands of the KNX or instafunk system.
In addition to different 1-10 V control units Insta
also offers electronic ballasts with 1-10 V control
input for low-voltage halogen lamps.
>>> LEDOTRON
Control light by means of
digital control technology DALI
DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface)
brings modern digital interface technology into
the light operating device. Switching and dimming
commands are transmitted via two free
strands in the feed cable of the light and are carried
out immediately in the operating device.
DALI stands for single-room intelligent light
management. Different controllers make different
functions possible. In broadcast operation
several operating points with the same function
are available, with standardized dimming behaviour.
The connection to the KNX system allows to
realise complex light control economically and to
open up saving potentials.

Dimmer types
L
R,L,C
Basically, dimmers can be assigned to one of four
product groups: The dimmer C for standard incan-
descent lamps works in leading edge. It is suita-
ble for resistive loads, i.e. L,C for standard and high-
voltage halogen lamps.
R,L
The operation principle of the low-voltage dimmer
corresponds to that of the standard incande-
scent lamps dimmer for R,Cincandescent
lamps. An
additional electronic function makes it furthermore
suitable for inductive loads, e.g. for conven-
R,L,C
tional transformers in order to manage the shift
between current and voltage caused by inductive
loads.
Tronic dimmers are the third product group. They
have been developed for dimming of the highquality
Insta Tronic transformers, for Tronic transformers
are capacitive loads which, in combination
with leading-edge dimmers, would cause
problematic spikes in each mains semi wave. By
means of the Tronic dimmer, a trailing-edge dimmer,
Tronic transformers, resistive loads or mixtures
of both can be dimmed without problems.
Should a Tronic dimmer be not available, the Tronic
Trafo SNTI can be used. Due to its special switching
technique it can be operated with both
trailing-edge and low-voltage leading edge
dimmers.
Universal dimmers are the most intelligent product
group. They contain micro controllers which
control the dimmers depending on the software.
They are able to measure the characteristics of
the connected load after switch-on and adapt to
the suitable dimming principle, leading or trailing-edge.
Thus they can be used universally. It
must be observed, however, that inductive and
capacitive loads must not be connected simultaneously
as they require opposing dimming processes
and the universal dimmer can only select
one dimming process.
In case you do not find the desired product in our
product range, Insta also develops customer-specific
solutions.
Today’s situation
Various incandescent lamps have already been banned or will be banned
from the market by 2016 acc. to the Ecodesign directive 2005/32/EG (EuP).
Today, replacements offered on the market in combination with existing
dimmers often leads to various problems: device combinations often do not
function correctly or do not comply with the limit values required by the
standard.
The solution
The companies Insta and Osram cooperate in the development of a new
dimming technology to solve this problem.
By means of the new LEDOTRON technology, suitable compact fluorescent
lamps and monochrome LED lamps can be controlled (dimmed) safely and
comfortably; in future it will also be possible to control colour temperature
and colour of suitable lamps.
Dimming of the future with the new LEDOTRON process
Basic idea of the new technology is to replace former dimmers and lamps
by new components one to one. The new control devices send information
to the connected lamps via the existing mains cable. The new process
LEDOTRON is open for future supplements like radio interfaces, bus connections
or new operating concepts, which underlines the sustainability of
the new technology.
Advantages at one glance
Sustainable technology
Use of existing cables
Easy installation, no commissioning, immediately ready for operation
Comfortable operation conforming to standards
Light colour and brightness of suitable lamps can be controlled
Safety of the user granted also in case of unsuitable device combinations

Technology in detail
In hitherto common dimming processes the dimmer dimensions the capacity
given to the lamp by the phase angle either in leading or trailing edge
of the mains sinus of each half-wave. Thus in dimmed state the lamp and
the integrated ballast in the lamp base receive only a fraction of the rated
voltage.
LEDITRON control units operate according to a completely different
method: they conduct the mains sinus in operation – independent of the
desired brightness value of the lamp – nearly fully to the lamp. Only a small
constant leading edge provides that the control unit can also supply itself
with energy.
The control unit contains an encoder which impresses information on the
desired brightness and/or colour information as digital telegram on the
mains sinus. A decoder in the ballast of the lamp evaluates the telegram on
the mains sinus and transmits the information to the capacity electronics of
the lamp which then operates the lamp with the desired values.
Since the control unit is designed in 2-wire-technique it does not have a
neutral conductor port and therefore must supply itself by a low current via
the lamp load. To this effect it generates a low constant leading edge. The
digital telegram is coupled to the falling slope of the mains sinus and stretches
over several half-waves.
The change – make new from old
Comparing switchings and signal profiles it becomes clear that simply both
control unit and lamp have to be exchanged to retrofit existing systems to
the new process.
If, by mistake, a non-LEDITRON-lamp is installed in a LEDITRON-controlled
luminaire, you will be able to switch it on and off without a problem, for
the control unit passes on nearly full mains voltage. Dimming, however, is
not possible, for the lamp cannot evaluate the telegrams.
The market
Focus of application of LEDITRON is on private buildings and small trade, on
shop lighting and practices. Here, dimmers are normally installed flush and
control retrofit lamps with lampholder types E27, E14, GU10 etc. Technical
alternatives to LEDITRON, which would also bring the advantage of standardisation,
cannot be found there.
First devices for control of white light, sold by the companies Gira, Jung
This module in minimized shape for automatic constant light control is suitable
e.g. for installation in ceilings for working place illumination. It is connected
directly to the 1-10 V control input of the luminaire. It reduces the
brightness of the luminaire if the working place is sufficiently illuminated by
daylight. Thus beneath the luminaire there is a constant light level whose
basic brightness can be preset at the module. This brings the desired lighting
In large modern lighting systems more and more lamps are operated by EVGs
(electronic ballasts) that are equipped with a 1-10 V control input. Thus also
high loads can centrally be switched and dimmed. This control principle has
also been realised for the SNT 105 / 1-10 V, so that it can be integrated in
1-10 V systems.

instafunk
instafunk is a wireless light management system.
Its advantage is easy retrofitting. The comfort of
an existing system can clearly be enhanced without
additional control leads.
Wireless function
instafunk allows wireless switching and control of
individual or group lights or light scenes, through
to broadcast commands.
In contrast to the well-known remote control systems
based on infrared radiation, the instafunk
system uses electro-magnetic waves for the transmission
of control telegrams. The electro-magnetic
rays propagate radially and permeate walls and
furniture .
www.insta.de
Easy commissioning
Programming of an installation within the instafunk
system is effected by easy learning processes
between transmitter and receiver – a PC-supported
member definition is not required.
Theoretically, each transmitter can address an
infinite number of receivers, the receivers can be
programmed to 30 transmitters each, without
demanding programming knowledge from the
user.
Quality assurance
For instafunk applications the communication
transmission on a frequency of 433 MHz has proven
itself in practice. Compared to low-cost systems
the instafunk system is considerably more
narrow-banded. It works more selectively and
thus is less sensitive to interferences from outside.
The instafunk system components have an individual
serial number excluding mutual influence
of parallel systems. Active influence from outside,
e.g. by radio amateurs (interferers) is also excluded,
so that the products offer a high operation
reliability.
Ranges
The typical transmission range of a RF transmitter
is 100 m and depends on the construction characteristics
of the object.
• Timber, gypsum, gypsum plaster boards
approx. 1...3 dB damping corresponds to
approx. 90...70 % range
• Brickwork, particle boards approx. 10 dB damping
corresponds to approx. 30 % range
• Reinforced concrete approx. 20 dB damping
corresponds to approx. 10 % range
• Metal, metal grating, aluminium overlay
approx. 30...40 dB damping corresponds to
approx. 3...1 % range
Construction materials, particularly metal or
metal coatings, might dampen the radio signal.
In this case the Insta repeater can be used. The
repeater is installed centrally and ensures transmission
of the signals by receiving and passing on
of the signals.
Europe-wide use
Since April 2001 admission processes for radio
products have been controlled by a common
European guideline. The guideline R&TTE 1999/5/
EG (Radio equipment and Telecommunications
Terminal Equipment) in general is based on a
device check by independent authorities. If the
devices meet all requirements, they may be used
in all EU and EFTA states. The Insta products have
passed all relevant tests before they are placed
onto the market.

Health-friendliness
The radiation reaching the human being
when using the instafunk system is by factor
100,000 lesser than e.g. the radiation of a mobile
phone. There is radiation only during operation
so that instalight ® RF can particularly be recommended
for mains isolation.
Compatibility
instafunk system components can also be used as
linked subsystem within KNX and LEDTRIX.
Fields of use
With the instafunk-components Insta offers light
manufacturers versatile products whose functions
and advantages are normally known from
wired bus systems only.
The instafunk-components can be installed
directly into the lights. Insta offers integrable
components for all standard light systems.
Possible applications
Multi-room lighting control, e.g. for shops or presentation rooms
KNX can be supplemented by comfortable, user-friendly operation possibilities like instafunk hand and
wall transmitters
Managable light management solution for private homes
Advantages
Wireless signal transmission, no additional wiring necessary for the control
Easy device allocation by pressing of a button (push button mode)
Easy integration of any kind of sensorics via instafunk multi-function transmitter
Flexible retrofitting
Terms and Conditions of Sale, Delivery and Payment with effect from 01.08.2011
§ 1 Validity
These terms and conditions are valid in so far as no agreement to the contrary has been made in writing.
Any conflicting or deviating terms and conditions on the part of the customer are not binding for
us even if we have not explicitly opposed them or if we have executed the delivery without objection.
§ 2 Conclusion of contract – written form
(1) Our offers are without obligation unless otherwise stated in writing. An order is not deemed to have
been accepted until it has been acknowledged by us in writing.
(2) All agreements, declarations and other data are invalid unless made in writing; telephone calls must
be confirmed in writing. Confirmation by telecommunication is sufficient to meet the requirement of
the written form.
§ 3 Scope of deliveries and services
(1) The documents, drawings, weight specifications, samples etc. attached to our offer are only approximately
decisive in so far as nothing to the contrary is derived from the offer.
(2) The right is explicitly reserved to modify the design, the layout, the material selected and the production
process even after acknowledgement of the order has been dispatched, as long as the price and/
or the essential performance data or the delivery time are not changed as a result and the customer
can reasonably be expected to accept this.
§ 4 Delivery times
(1) The delivery time specified by us in the acknowledgement of the order is without obligation unless
otherwise agreed in writing. Deliveries are explicitly subject to our obtaining delivery correctly and on
time ourselves. The delivery time starts with the date on which our acknowledgement of the order is
dispatched, but not before complete clarification of all issues relating to technical details.
(2) The delivery time is extended if unforeseeable and/or unavoidable and/or exceptional events occur,
in particular strikes of any kind and failure on the part of our suppliers to deliver to us on time, even
if these events do not occur until a delay has already set in. The customer must be notified of this in
writing without delay.
(3) If shipment is delayed at the request of the customer or for other reasons beyond our control, the
customer bears the resulting additional costs as well as the risk of accidental loss or of accidental
deterioration of the goods to be delivered from the time when he is advised that the goods are ready
for shipment.
(4) If the goods are stored at our factory (or on the premises of a person authorized by us), we are entitled
to charge at least 0.5% of the price of the consignment for each month or part therefore during which
the goods are stored. We reserve the right to further claims.
(5) The right to make deliveries in instalments or prematurely is reserved on principle.
(6) In the event of a delay in delivery for which we are responsible, we are liable according to the statutory
regulations if the delay is due to a wilful or grossly negligent violation of the contract for which we are
liable. We assume responsibility for a fault attributable to our representatives or our vicarious agents.
If the delay in delivery is due to a grossly negligent violation of the contract for which we are liable,
our liability for damages is limited to typical foreseeable-occurring damages. In the event of slight
negligence we do not assume liability.
(7) The adherence by us to the delivery time is subject to the punctual and correct fulfilment of the
customer’s contractual duties, in particular of his financial obligations.
§ 5 Passing of the risk, shipment, packaging
(1) Our prices are calculated ex works or ex respective distribution depot (in accordance with Inco-terms
2010).
(2) The goods are shipped at the customer’s risk and expense. If no shipping instructions are given by the
customer, we select the least expensive means of transport and the least expensive route.
(3) Packaging is charged at cost price unless otherwise agreed.
(4) We reserve the right to take out a transport insurance policy. In the event of damage in transit, settlement
shall be made in accordance with the terms of our insurance policy against submission of the
following documents:
a) ascertainment of the facts by the transport company (e.g. forwarder’s receipt),
b) original consignment note,
c) transfer of the claims arising from the damage incurred.
5) The customer is under obligation to notify us in writing within 8 days of receipt of the consignment
of any damage occurring in transit. The damaged parts are to be returned carriage paid to our Lüdenscheid
factory or carriage paid to our respective distribution depot.
§ 6 Prices, terms of payment, securities
(1) Our prices are calculated ex works or ex respective distribution depot (in accordance with
Incoterms 2010).
(2) Our prices are based on the cost factors relevant at the time of the offer being submitted (acknowledgement
of the order). If they change between the time of the contract being concluded and shipment
of the goods, we reserve the right to modify the price in reasonable proportion to the increased
costs.
(3) All payments by the customer must be made with no deduction whatsoever onto our bank account
in Lüdenscheid by the specified dates. Netting options are due to the customer only when claims are
undisputed or have been established with legal force. In these cases the customer also has a right of
retention. He furthermore has a right of retention if the right of retention is based on a defective delivery
for which we are liable. In these cases the right of retention may be exercised only in proportion
to the defect.
(4) If the customer’s economic circumstances undergo changes capable of casting doubt on the fulfilment
of the financial obligations after the date of dispatch of our acknowledgement of the order, we are
entitled to withhold delivery of the goods or to demand security. If the customer fails to meet our
request for the furnishing of security within a reasonable time, we are entitled to withdraw from the
contract.
(5) Our agents and sales representatives are not authorized to accept payments or means of payment
unless they have collection authority.
(6) Bills of exchange and cheques are accepted only in payment; all bank, discount and collection charges
are charged to the customer. Payments made by bill of exchange or by cheque are deemed to have
been made only when the respective sum has been credited to our account.
(7) If the customer defaults in payment, we are entitled to charge default interest at a rate of 8 % above
the respective base lending rate.
www.insta.de
Appendix
§ 7 Liability for material defects and product liability
(1) In the event of defects, we are liable to the extent of rectifying faults in design, production, colour,
quality or other aspects of workmanship at our discretion free of charge within a reasonable period,
either by eliminating the defect free of charge or by supplying a non-defective item. Any replaced parts
are to be returned to us on request; to this extent the rules governing withdrawal from the contract
are applicable.
(2) We accept liability for defects that have occurred and have been reported in due time in goods and
parts delivered on the basis of reference samples and acceptance samples only if the delivered parts
deviate from the reference samples and acceptance samples submitted to and approved by the customer.
Failure on the part of the customer to carry out an adequate performance test of such a sample
places the onus on the customer and releases us from liability for defects as well as from any other
liability.
(3) Our liability for defects is subject to the customer having given detailed written notice of any patent
defects according to § 377 German Commercial Code (HGB) within 6 days of having received the
goods. Latent defects must be reported in detail in writing within the same period, calculated from
the time of their becoming patent.
(4) Our liability for defects is moreover subject to the goods having been faultlessly installed, commissioned
and utilized under strict observance of our operating instructions.
(5) In the event of subsequent fulfilment being a failure, the customer is entitled to assert his right to
terminate the contract or to reduce the purchase price in case of substantial defects.
(6) If the damage has been caused with intent or through gross negligence, the statutory regulations shall
apply. In so far as we have culpably infringed an essential contractual obligation, we are liable to pay
compensation for the damage, including compensation instead of fulfilment; our liability is then limited
to foreseeable damage. The same applies if the customer asserts claims for compensation rather
than fulfilment. In the event of slight negligence we do not assume liability.
(7) The liability to pay compensation under the terms of the German Product Liability Act remains unaffected,
as does the liability to pay compensation for personal injury, be it physical injury or impairment
of health, including the death of a person.
(8) In the production of electronic modules in which components manufactured by third parties are processed,
our liability for defects is limited to our assigning our claims against the respective components
supplier to the customer if requested in writing to do so. Any liability on our part is precluded, however,
if the customer is capable of recovering his losses from the respective components supplier.
(9) The limitation period is 24 months, calculated from the date of delivery.
§ 8 Provision of material by the customer
(1) All materials provided by the customer are supplied free of charge. Our inspection of incoming goods
covers quantity and damage in transit. The components are not controlled for quality. Unless detailed
documentation with respect to handling is provided by the customer, the components are handled
in the same way as our own material. To this extent, the customer renounces the requirement for an
inspection of incoming goods according to § 377 German Commercial Code (HGB). We take it for
granted that a corresponding inspection of outgoing goods is carried out by the customer. At the same
time the customer ensures that his liability insurer or product liability insurer respectively eliminates to
this extent the exclusion of cover by agreement in accordance with clause 7.3 of the General Liability
Conditions (AHB).
(2) We are not liable for damage caused directly or indirectly by the material provided by the customer;
the ruling set out in § 7, point (6) remains unaffected.
(3) Any detailed technical documentation provided by the customer with respect to the material provided
will be taken into account in our materials management.
§ 9 Retention of title
(1) We retain the title to the goods until receipt of all payments deriving from this supply contract, including
any other contracts concluded between the customer and ourselves up to the time of conclusion
of the present contract. The customer is entitled to resell the reserved goods in the ordinary course
of business. Howe-ver, he assigns to us even now all claims against the buyer or against third parties
accruing to him from the resale at the level of the respective invoice value. The customer is authorized
to collect these claims even after their assignment. Our right to collect the claim ourselves remains unaffected
by this. In particular we are entitled to demand that the customer notifies us of the assigned
claim, its level and its liable party, provides all data necessary for the collection and surrenders the
relevant documents to us without delay, and notifies the liable party in writing of the assignment.
(2) The customer is not entitled to pledge the reserved goods nor to assign them by way of security to
third parties.
(3) In the event of the customer’s conduct being contrary to the terms of the contract, in particular in the
event of default in payment, we are entitled to take possession of the goods again. Neither the repossession
nor the pledging of the goods by us implies any declaration of withdrawal from the contract.
The fact is rather that withdrawal is applicable only when explicitly declared by us in writing.
(4) The customer must notify us without delay of any seizures or other interventions by third parties.
(5) If the goods are resold together with other goods not belonging to us, the claim by the customer
against the buyer is deemed to be assigned at the level of the delivery price agreed between ourselves
and the customer.
(6) In the event of our title being lost due to incorporation, the customer assigns the claim for compensation
due to him.
(7) The treatment and processing of the reserved goods by the customer are always done on our behalf.
(8) At the customer’s request, we are obliged to release securities at our discretion if the realizable value
of the claims to be secured exceeds our claim by more than 10%.
§ 10 Place of performance – place of jurisdiction – applicable law – scope of validity
(1) The place of performance for all obligations arising from this contract, including any claim for termination,
is Lüdenscheid.
(2) The place of jurisdiction is Lüdenscheid. This also applies to any actions on bills of exchange or cheques,
in particular to claims arising from default proceedings. As long as judicial proceedings against us are
not yet pending, however, we are entitled also to sue the customer at the court responsible for his
domicile.
(3) Applicable law is the law of the Federal Republic of Germany (including UN Sales Convention)
(4) These Terms and Conditions of Sale, Delivery and Payment are valid only with respect to entrepreneurs
as defined by § 14 German Civil Code (BGB).
