Selfishness prevails instead of love. <strong>The</strong> world,the flesh, <strong>and</strong> the devil are too strong for men, howeverdl-intentioned they may be, unless God is on their side.Bven the Communism of the saints in the time of theApostles, failed from this very cause (Acts IV, 3437; VI,I) ;-<strong>and</strong> if such men <strong>and</strong> women failed, how certainly willthe world at large fail! Sin <strong>and</strong> selfishness must be eradicatedbefore men are capable of successfully rulingthemselves or others.. This reason may be named theimpcrfct moral nature of man, due mainly to heredity <strong>and</strong>environment. His heart is not right.(2) A second important reason is, that no one, ruler orsubject, is perfectly sound in mind. We confine a certainsection of mankind in asylums <strong>and</strong> label them "insane."As a matter of fact, however, there is no one perfectlysane or sound of mind. What is insanity? Insanitysimply means lack af judgment; <strong>and</strong> I do not think anyonewill claim that he is perfectly sound (sane) in judgment.However wisely a man or a body of men may, rule,occasional errors in judgment are sure to occur. <strong>The</strong>principal reason for this is the inability to read motives.Men can judge only by the hearing of the ear, <strong>and</strong> theseeing of the eye; they cannot read the heart. Thus "toerr is human" has become a proverb. This reason ofman's failure to govern successfully may be c.ailed theimperfect mental nature of man, due mainly to heredity.His head is not right.(3) A third reason, no less important than the others, isthat everyone is more or less physically imperfect. Someare a little stronger than their fellows, but all are more orless weak <strong>and</strong> prone to disease <strong>and</strong> accidents, <strong>and</strong> sooneror later everyone goes down into death. So long as deathreigns, there can mer be everlasting peace <strong>and</strong> contentment.Though every other cause of sorrow were removed, theloss by death of our nearest <strong>and</strong> dearest, <strong>and</strong> the knowledgethat sooner or later we also will require to die, mustnecessarily mar happiness.
