U7e must look to God himself, and expect to getour answer not through visions or peculiar mani;festations, but through the Bible, the Word of .God," the faith once for all delivered to the saints "-Jude 3, R.V.- a,.. What is the'~oul?. .To get a proper understanding of our subjects we-"must begin .with the 'question : " What is thesoul?" For the answer we naturallv turn to therlescription of the creation of thei first humansoal, Adam, which we h d in the 7th verse of the2nd chapter of Genesis : " The Lord God formedma= ~f the dust of the gronnd and breathed intohis nostrils the breath of life, and man became aliviqg soul."bet us study this a little: ye should not readthe Bible without thinking over. what God has totell us. " God formed man -of the dust of thegronnd." Adam's body was formed of the elementsof the earth. He had eyes, ears, and a mouth, butso far no ability to see, hear 'or speak. Then Godbreathed into his noarils the breath of life.Notice, the Bible does not say that God breathedinto his nostrils a soul. What the Word says isthat God " breathed into his nostrils the breath oflife," the spirit or power of life. ~ n what d was.the result? Do we find the intimation that Adam ,-had now a soul in him ? No, we find that the resultof the breath of life having been breathed intoAdam was that he " became a living soul.':. Inother words, the soul is not the body, nor 1s itthe spirit of .life, but in order to be a living soul itmust possess both a body and the spirit of life.8'
