FOREWORD
In the 13 years that we have been producing guides
to cities in Poland the UEFA Euro2012 Football
Championships which take place during the lifetime of this
guide is without question the most important and largest
event we have ever anticipated. Since the tournament
was awarded to Poland and Ukraine back in 2007, the
country’s attention has been fixed on June 2012 and the
work that has gone into preparations for the expected
influx of hundreds of thousands of extra visitors has been
huge. It would be fair to say that the decision to award
Poland the right to host the tournament has changed the
country forever and despite some failures to complete
projects in time, the country is ready to host a successful
tournament. The challenges Poland set itself were
ambitious and the focus ought to be on what has been
achieved rather than what hasn’t yet been completed.
What the award of the tournament achieved was to
increase the speed that Poland was developing from
fast to breakneck with infrastructure programs and
investment being created or brought forward to meet the
new deadline. There are now new roads, a new terminal
at the airport and of course a brand new stadium along
with modernised public transport services and countless
new hotels, bars, restaurants and services for visitors. In
the Tri-city the market for incoming visitors was already
developing at a healthy rate, but the tournament has
spurred people on to invest where they might not have
otherwise done so. As Michel Platini, the head of European
football’s governing body UEFA commented on one visit to
the Legnica district where the stadium has been built ‘the
tournament lasts only three weeks, but the infrastructure
will serve for 40-50 years.’
Whether you are here for the football, on holiday or for
business, you will reap the benefits of this and it has to
be hoped that rather than Euro2012 being viewed as
the final step in this process, the city continues to invest
and develop for the long-term benefit of its residents
and for you the visitor. In the meantime, if you are here
for the football, do try to explore the three cities that
make up the Tri-city conurbation with the help of this
guide and have a great time in what we think is one
of Europe’s most fascinating cities. We appreciate all
