CarboQCLab and At-lineBeverage Carbonation Meter::: Unique Density & Concentration Meters

CarboQCBeverage Carbonation MeterThe CO 2 content strongly influences the taste ofalcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. For thisreason, as well as for product safety, the precisemeasurement of the CO 2 content is an importanttask in the production and quality control ofbeverages. A new measuring method that avoidsthe shortcomings of conventional methods of CO 2measurement has been developed by Anton Paar. This measuring method, incorporated into the novelCarboQC, is not influenced by other dissolved gasessuch as oxygen and nitrogen, requires no sampleflow during the measurement, is rapid, and needsonly minimum sample volume.Features and benefitsAccurate and traceable CO 2 measurement4 One instrument suitable for lab and at-line applications4 No influence of dissolved air (oxygen and nitrogen)using the Multiple Volume Expansion Method patentedby Anton Paar (AT 409673, GB 237 3584,US 6,874,351)4 Highly accurate absolute pressure sensor, no weatherand sea level influence4 No adjustment with CO 2 standards necessary4 Suitable for pressures of up to 10 bar (145 psi)Display and keypadHigh-quality features4 Simple and easy operation4 Data memory for 100 measurements4 Battery stack quickly rechargeable for flexible operation4 Two RS 232 interfaces for the transfer of measuringresults to a printer or PC4 Filling, rinsing and measuring by pressing only onebutton4 Splash-proof, lightweight plastic housing4 Minimum bench space requiredSplash-proofinterface connectorand on/off switchCapable.Reliable.Portable.Optionalprinter/PCconnection

Measuring SystemThe measurement is started by pressing a buttonand is controlled by the instrument. Replacementof the sample is carried out automatically. Themagnetic stirrer which is built into the measuringchamber allows bubble-free filling of the chamberwith new sample.CarboQC is supplied factory-adjusted and can beused right from the start. Periodical checks andany necessary readjustment of the zero point arecarried out with purified water.Fast and easy handling4 Pressing one button selects the method for the typeof beverage. Customer-specific CO 2 calculationalgorithms can be stored. All settings are passwordprotected.4 The LCD display is large, bright, easy to read andholds 4 lines of displayed data. Different units suchas “g/l”, “Vol.”, “bar” or “psi” can be selected. Methodsettings for regular and diet soft drinks, beer, sparklingwine and mineral water are pre-programmed.PFD Filling Device,detail4 CarboQC is not dependent on sample flow or sampletemperature.CombinationsCombination of a CarboQC and PFD Filling Device withan Anton Paar density meter DMA 4100, DMA 4500 orDMA 5000 allows simultaneous determination ofdensity, °Brix and carbon dioxide content. For additionaldetermination of alcohol content, an Anton Paar AlcolyzerPlus Beer can be connected. Measurements can beperformed directly out of bottles or cans without the needof any sample degassing.PFD accommodatesdifferent bottles/cansApplications4 Soft drink production4 Brewing industry4 Mineral water production4 Wine and sparkling wine productionAt-line spotmeasurements

Measuring MethodHow does the Multiple Volume ExpansionMethod work? The measuring chamber is completely filled withsample and sealed. The volume of the measuring chamber is expanded.Equilibrium is generated and pressure andtemperature are measured. The measuring chamber volume is furtherexpanded, equilibrium is generated and pressureand temperature are measured again. The two pressures and temperatures are used forCO 2 determination and dissolved air compensation. Why does the Multiple Expansion Method work? The patented Multiple Expansion Method makes use ofthe fact that the solubility of air in beverages is muchlower than that of CO 2 . Therefore, when expanding thevolume of the measuring chamber, the partial pressureof air decreases much more than that of CO 2 .Measuring the equilibrium pressures and temperaturesat two different volume expansions of the measuringchamber allows a CO 2 result to be detected where theeffect of other dissolved gases, such as air or nitrogen,is completely compensated. The graph explains how two volume expansions eliminatethis influence. If CO 2 as well as some air are dissolved in thebeverage, the second measurement gives a lower readingthan the first measurement which can be seen from thered curve. The difference between the first and secondmeasurement is used to quantify the amount of dissolvedair and mathematically calculate and compensate for theamount of dissolved air.The result is the genuine CO 2 concentration in the beverage.

A Close-Knit TeamFor measurements of samples out of bottles orcans CarboQC can be connected to the PFDFilling Device. The PFD Filling Device piercesthe bottle closure or the base of the can andforces the beverage into the CarboQC measuringchamber using compressed air. The integratedsafety shield protects the operator in the unlikelyevent of a pressurized beverage container bursting.For measurements from tanks or from theproduction line, the instrument is connected to thetank or production line by a hose and filled by thegiven system pressure (up to max. 10 bar/145 psi).Pressing one button fills the measuring chamberwith sample and starts the measurement.SpecificationsCarboQCMeasuring rangeCO 2TemperaturePressure0 to 12 g/L (0 to 6 Vol.) at 30 °C (86 °F)0 to 20 g/L (0 to 10 Vol.) < 15 °C (59 °F)-3 to 30 °C (27 to 86 °F)0 to 10 bar absolute (0 to 145 psi)Repeatability s. d. 0.01 g/L (0.005 Vol.) CO 2Reproducibility s. d. 0.05 g/L (0.025 Vol.) CO 2ResolutionSample volumeTypical measuring time per sampleDimensions (L x W x H)WeightPowerInterfaces0.01/0.001 g/L selectableapprox. 100 mLapprox. 90 seconds190 x 120 x 305 mm (7.5 x 4.7 x 12 inches)2.6 kg (5.7 lbs)Power supply: Input 100 to 240 V, 50 to 60 HzBattery operation: for approx. 500 measurements2 x RS 232 for PC and printerPFD Filling DeviceCompressed airDimensions (L x W x H)Weight6 bar (87 psi)220 x 220 x 650 mm (8.7 x 8.7 x 25.6 inches)6.5 kg (14.3 lbs)
