Sketchbook Cover—Front and Back—10 pts. Total• You will be given a sketchbook covered in canvas. Your first assignment is topersonalize your sketchbook on the front and back covers. Make it your own.You may choose the subject matter, composition, and media. Please do not useany material that may rub off, however, such as chalk or oil pastels.(NOTE: You are fully responsible for this sketchbook, much like a textbook. Ifyou lose it or drop the class, you will be responsible for the full cost of the book.You will have several assignments in this throughout the year, so please bring toclass daily.)2. Sketchbook <strong>Assignment</strong>s—Concentration Work—60 pts. Total• Consider your area of concentration for the upcoming year. A ConcentrationPortfolio focuses on one visual idea/concept and generally uses a consistent set ofmaterials. This must be determined very early in the year, particularly for seniors,as this portfolio requires a great deal of focus and direction to complete.• You must complete 3 works focusing on a possible concentration in yoursketchbook. You may use any medium that you so desire, but you should choosea medium that is most suitable to the subject matter. Please see me for anynecessary materials.• Each drawing should take up one to two pages and should be a well-conceivedpiece. Look at Michael Bell’s 31 Nights Project on YouTube to see the quality ofsketchbook pages for inspiration. Text is also permissible in a completed piece.• In addition, your first concentration piece will be due early in the first quarter, sobe prepared to have an idea in mind for this project. This will be completedentirely outside of class and will be worth an additional 100 points.


3. Sketchbook <strong>Assignment</strong>—One Observation Work—15 pts. Total• You must complete one drawing (based upon the list below) fromOBSERVATION in your sketchbook. This sketch must be as highly rendered aspossible. Once again, you may use any drawing medium that you so desire, butyou should choose a medium that is most suitable to the subject matter. (I wouldsuggest using traditional graphite pencils—2H to 6B—and a kneaded eraser orcolored pencils.) Please see me for any necessary materials.• This drawing should take up the majority of one page. Although I am not tooconcerned about the composition and background, these items should still beconsidered. The object should not be floating in space. A single light source ishighly recommended. Do not forget about highlights and shadows.• I will use my discretion as to what is a “complete” drawing. Take your time andreally look at each object.‣ A crumpled pair of jeans.‣ A bracelet, necklace, earring, or watch.‣ A flower (real or artificial).‣ A crumpled piece of paper.‣ An object made of glass (such as a jar or bottle of cologne).4. <strong>AP</strong> <strong>Studio</strong> <strong>Art</strong>/<strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Art</strong>s T-Shirt Design—Front and Back—15 pts. Total• Create an original, cool design for the <strong>AP</strong> <strong>Art</strong> class of <strong>2012</strong>/20<strong>13</strong>. You may usethe computer to aid in the design process. The class will vote on the best designand present to the administrators for approval.5. Museum, <strong>Art</strong> Show, or Gallery Visit—15 pts. Total• Go to an art museum, art show, or art gallery/store (i.e., CMA, Akron <strong>Art</strong>Museum, Summit <strong>Art</strong> Space, Spaces Gallery, Gallery <strong>13</strong>8, Dead Horse Gallery,Hazel Tree Interiors, etc.). Online museums and galleries are NOT acceptable.• Take a picture of yourself at the location and text or e-mail to me. Be creative aspossible with your photo. My phone number is 216-870-6023. My e-mail isfortmanj@hoban.org.• Get a receipt, card, or brochure from the place that you visited.• Find your favorite piece or artist. Write down the name of the artist, title (ifapplicable), year, medium, etc. Use your sketchbook. Feel free to take a pictureof you in front of the art work or artist if possible and send to me as well.• In your sketchbook, write down a few notes on why the work or person is yourfavorite.• I will post your pictures on the new <strong>AP</strong> blog, which is currently underconstruction. The address is http://hobanapart.blogspot.com.6. Junk—10 pts. Total• Go to a thrift store. Search your basement, garage, attic, or shed. Go dumpsterdiving. Search for cool junk. Look for a variety of materials based upon size,contours, negative space, texture, etc. Bring in at least 5 objects. Do NOT bringin anything that needs to be returned. (These will be primed in gesso.)
