Inhalation TreatmentThere are several courses of action for medical treatment ofpersons who have inhaled high levels of contamination.Refer to the section on “Lung Deposition” for clarification ofinhaled particle size related to where in the lung thoseparticles may be deposited.Anti-oxidantsAnti-oxidants may be used to counteract the influence of freeradicals formed as the result of radiation exposure. Freeradicals react with (and change) body cells. Vitamins C andE are common treatments for reducing the effects of freeradicals. How well this course of treatment may work in thecase of external radiation exposure has not been fullyevaluated.AntibioticsThe use of antibiotics to prevent infection which may occurdue to the exposed person’s depressed immune systemneeds to be evaluated carefully before pursuing thistreatment. Perhaps minimizing the sources of infection wouldbe a better treatment process.DilutionPerhaps the most common application of dilution is when anindividual has been exposed to tritium, either thru inhalation, ingestion, or absorption. Drinking a lot of water will act as adiuretic and the tritium, which has combined with oxygen toform tritiated water, will be flushed out of the individual’sbody.Inhalation TreatmentThere are several courses of action for medical treatment ofpersons who have inhaled high levels of contamination.Refer to the section on “Lung Deposition” for clarification ofinhaled particle size related to where in the lung thoseparticles may be deposited.Anti-oxidantsAnti-oxidants may be used to counteract the influence of freeradicals formed as the result of radiation exposure.
