CIMMYT to describe selection history is: Each pedigree name begins with analphabetic designation ofthe cross origin, followed by cross number. After thecross number there is either a letter or number-letter combination. For top anddouble crosses,a letter is assigned to each plant selected in the F 1 generation. In number-letter combinations, the number identifies the individual plant andthe letter indicates the location of selection (see table below). The zero lettercombinations (OM,OY,etc.) are reserved for populations carried as bulk in thatgeneration. Examples follow:Type of cross Cross Plant selection and locationnumber (by generation)F] F 2 Fa F 4 F 5F GSimple (Variety xvariety) CMl162 2Y 1M 1Y OMTop (F1 X variety)and Double (F J x 0) CM33027 F 15M 500Y OM 87B OYIt is hoped that various national wheat breeding programmes will also developor evolve a similar standardised system of reporting selection history, which inturn will facilitate identification of cultivars with common origins at globallevel.Since a large number of crosses are made annually by Indian Wheat ImprovementProgrammes, CIMMYT and other cooperating institutions, and manycultivars based on such crosses are released every year, this bulletin willrequire updating and revision at least every four years to accomodate additionalentries. In a compilation of this nature, where the information is based onseveral sources, including published reports, there is a high probability ofcarrying forward errors, omissions, etc. I, therefore, welcome information andsuggestions for making this compilation more comprehensive and useful towheat researchers the world over.REFERENCESAgrawal, R K. 1986.
