1995 FOOTBALL COACH OF THE YEARRUSS MORRELL, Bon Homme High SchoolPerennial contenders for state honors in football, the Bon HommeCavaliers have become firmly entrenched at the top of the heap. Theywon their second straight Class 11B state championship at the DakotaDome last fall, runnlng their wln streak to 21 games. For the Cav'ssparkling success, coach Russ Morrell has been honored as FootballCoach of the Year.Russ has racked up a career record of 160 wins and only 55 losses,but the state crown had eluded him until now. "The smtles on thekids' faces show how happy they are because they had a goal andworked hard to accomplish it. They'll always remember that lesson."


1995 BOYS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEARFORREST FLAAGEN, Rapid City Stevens High SchoolVeteran coach Forry Flaagen's team won its first state championshipunder his leadership last fall - his eighth season with the Raiders.He has coached three girls' teams to state titles in previous years atStevens and has won two other championships while coaching atSpearfish. The Stevens Raiders swept borh the boys' and the girls'state titles last fall.


1995 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEARMARLENE LORENZ, Arlington High SchoolMarlene became the girls' cross country coach in Arlington for thefirst time last fall - and it will be hard to match her inaugural season.Her Cardinals won the state Class B state title in October, and shehas been chosen as Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year. She hadpreviously coached the Cardinals distance runners for the track team.


1995 GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEARBOB SITTIG, Baltic High SchoolWhen the Baltic girls defeated Avon 59-56 in two overtimes to winthe girls Class B state basketball championship, it marked the firsttime that a Baltic team had ever won a state title.Bob Sittig, in ten years as the girls' coach in his home town, hadled his team to the regional finals four times, but hadn't gotten pastthat hurdle until this year. His overall record is 154-170.


<strong>1996</strong> GYMNASTICS COACH OF THE YEARRANDY HAGEN, Rapid City Central High SchoolRandy Hagen set high goals for his gymnastics team at Central,and it paid off. His girls won the state championship, and his peersvoted him Gymnastics Coach of the Year.A Sisseton High School and Northern State graduate, Hagencredited a season-long head-to-head struggle with crosstown rivalStevens as a key factor in the Cobblers' success. "Our spiritedcompetition kept us both sharp all year," he said. "That and our greatwork ethic were determining factors in our success."


<strong>1996</strong> VOLLEYBALL COACH OF THE YEARMIKE WEST, Philip High School"We just refused to get beat," commented Mike West in recappingthe Scotties' state championship year. "Our girls were behind in boththe semifinals and the finals of the state tournament, but decidedwhat they had to do to win; and they took it all."West, a hometown boy and a graduate of Black Hills State, has beenat the helm of the Philip volleyball program for eight years. Thevolleyball crown is the first-ever state championship in the school'shistory.


<strong>1996</strong> WRESTLING COACH OF THE YEARKEN RUML, HowardKen Ruml's ourstanding success with the Howard wrestling teamsreally paid off for him this year. Last summer he was awarded nationalcaaching honors and his colleagues in South Dakota followed bynaming him the state's Wrestling Coach of the Year.Ruml's Tigers have been Class B contenders in nearly all of hisnineteen years at Howard. He has a dual record of 161-37 with fiveundefeated teams. He has coached seven individual state championsand 72 stare place wlnners. Ken is proud of his young wrestlers. "Wehave a good junior high program, and that really helps."


<strong>1996</strong> BOYS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEARJIM SCHLEKEWAY, Mobridge High SchoolSuccess has followed ]im Schlekeway throughout his longinvolvement with the game of basketball. After an all-state career atBritton, he went on to Northern State College and scored 1,862 pointsfor their record book.He began coaching at Sioux Falls O'Gorman, spent two years inBloomington, Minnesota, then coached at Todd County for sevenyears. He has been at Mobridge for fifteen years and has a 28-yearcoaching record of 336-210.SchlekewaY1s last year's Tigers had a 19-2 record. "We had a goodgroup who enjoyed playing basketball:' he said. "The camaraderieand chemistry were really good."


<strong>1996</strong> GIRLS TRACK COACH OF THE YEARGENE BROWNELL, AberdeenThe Aberdeen Central girls' track team was successful in theirdefense of the Eastern South Dakota Conference track and fieldchamptonship. They also scored the highest point total ever by theGolden Eagles in state competition - 75% points. For his team's fineshowlng, Gene Brownell was named the Girls Track Coach of theYear - the second year in a row he has won the honor."1,was surprised to win:' he said. "It says an awful lot for the attitudeof the klds and the coaches in our roe ram."


<strong>1996</strong> BOYS TRACK COACH OF THE YEARJIM MINER, YanktonThe Yankton Bucks turned on the speed to win the state Class AAtrack and field championship. With his young team taking home thegold in the dashes and both short relay races, the state crown followedtheir E.S.D. conference title win."We had some fine talent," commented Miner. "and we had anoutstanding work ethic and great leadership. That's a \\.inning


<strong>1996</strong> TENNIS COACH OF THE YEARCHRIS DUMMERMUTH, Siow Falls Lincoln High SchoolChris Dummermuth's Lincoln Patriots dominated the Class A boys'tennis scene in South Dakota last spring, taking home another statetitle after an impressive showing. During the past ten years she hascapably led her teams to the top of the heap. For her continuingsuccess, Chris has again been named the Tennis Coach of the Year.


<strong>1996</strong> GOLF COACH OF THE YEARJIM SCHLIMGEN, PlankintonHard work, as well as talent, made the <strong>1996</strong> Plankinton golf teamthe most successful in the school's history and made Joe Schlimgenthe Golf Coach of the Year. Junior Adam Anderson was the ClassB tournament medalist and led his team to a strong second-placefinish.


<strong>1996</strong> ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEARIN BOYS' SPORTSRAY BOETEL, Rapid Citv Stevens High SchoolRav Boetel has been a member of the Ra~id Citv Stevens trackcoaching staff, specializing in jumping and vaulting events, since 1984.He had previously taught and coached at Lake Preston and at DouglasHigh School.His Raider pole vaulters have had outstanding success, with fiveof them in the top eight places in the AllTime Top Ten list in SouthDakota. His student athletes have won the gold in the last five statemeets. Boetel coached the state's first high school seven-foot highjumper and the first sixteen-foot pole vaulter.


<strong>1996</strong> ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEARIN GIRLS' SPORTSTERRY ENGELLAND, Sioux Falls Lincoln High SchoolTerry Engelland has been a member of the Sioux Falls Lincoln trackcoaching staff since his graduation from U.S.D. in 1970. He is a SiouxFalls native, having graduated from Washington High. A popular trackclinician, Terry has coached twenty state high school hurdlechampions and has had 32 gold medal hurdlers in the Sioux InterstateConference.In addition to his coaching duties, Engelland is the chairman ofLincoln High's social studies department.


<strong>1996</strong> ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEARIN JUNIOR HIGHMIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTSLUCY LINDSKOV, Whittier Middle School, Sioux FallsLucy Lindskov, Whittler's athletic coordlnator, has been at theschool slnce 1969, and has coached basketball, volleyball, gymnasticsand track. She has been lnvolved w~th girls' athletics since 1962, whenshe began a girls' track program in Lemmon.Llndskov has been a leader in gymnastics in the state since thesport's inception. She recelved the National Distinguished ServiceAward in gymnastics in 1994-95.


<strong>1996</strong> ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEARBOB PETERSON, Sturgis(posthumously)"It is difficult and sad to honor a fine man like Bob Petersonposthumously," commented .one of Gs colleagues. "He was one of themost popular men in our profession."Peterson, who died in March, had coached both boys' basketballand golf at Sturgis for many years. His 1972 Scoopers were the stateboys' golf champions. Sturgis put in a new track and field faciIity anda new basketball court during his administration. He was in his finaldays as president of the Black Hills Conference at the time of hisdeath.


<strong>1996</strong> OFFICIAL OF THE YEARRICHARD ROCKAFELLOW, GeddesRockafellow's long officiating career began when he was a highschool student. "I used to work 'B' games in basketball and then playin the varsity game," he reported.He became a registered official in 1956 and retained his certificationuntil 1988. His ongoing involvement in track has made him one ofthe state's busiest meet starters. Also a respected baseball official,Rockafellow was inducted into the South Dakota Baseball UmpiresHall of Fame in 1993. He is now the Superintendent of Schools inGeddes.


<strong>1996</strong> SPORTSWRITER OF THE YEARDON LINDNER, Rapid CityDon Lindner will retire from nearly a half century of covering SouthDakota sports this summer; and he will leave with the coaches'accolades ringing in his ears as he receives the Sportswriter of theYear award.With tours at Madison, Watertown and on the staff of SoDak Sportspreceding him to his long tenure in Rapid City, his successful careerhas been emphasized by the eleven "Sportswriter of the Year" honorshe has received from his peers, the National Association of Sportswritersand Sportscasters.


An outstanding athlete at Scotland High School and at SouthernState College, where he earned twelve varsity letters in football,basketball and track, Rohr coached and taught in the Watertownsystem for thirty years, retiring in 1987.Most of the Arrows' fine group of athletes were started in theirathletic careers by Rip Rohr. He coached elementary football for thirtyyears, basketball in grade schools for most of his long tenure, andbegan the Watertown elementary track and field program.
