Green InitiativesThe Office of Green Initiatives is responsible for ensuring that the District’s core value of green isimplemented throughout the park system. This is done in several ways; first by implementing broadgreen policy or procedures, second by supporting other department’s efforts in “going green” and thirdby managing specific environmental or green projects or initiatives.Going green not only makes us better environmental stewards, but it can save green as well. Bybecoming more energy efficient through lighting retrofits, heating systems upgrades, or buildinginsulation, we can reduce our energy usage and thus our utility costs. By implementing recyclingthroughout the parks with our blue recycling containers, we reduce the amount of waste that is sent tolandfills. And through good environmental management of special waste materials such as recyclingbatteries or asbestos abatement, we are able to responsibly green our facilities.Department ExpendituresAccount 2010 Actual 2011 Budget 2012 BudgetPersonnel Services $ 323,226 $ 507,379 $ 517,534Materials & Supplies $ 10,979 $ 1,000 $ 500Contractual Services $ 163,627 $ 267,350 $ 258,350Total $ 497,832 $ 775,729 $ 776,384Personnel FTE 5.5 5.5 5.5$800,000$700,000$600,000$500,000$400,0002010 2011 20122011 AccomplishmentsExpanded Green Office Challenge to include Regional OfficesInitiated ban on polystyrene (styrofoam) with concessionairesImplemented green permit process for special eventsApplied for and received Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grants from United States EnvironmentalProtection AgencyLaunched new communications effort at beaches regarding water quality2012 GoalsContinue to improve beach management to reduce swim bans and advisories and continue toexpand beach communication efforts to engage the public in efforts to keep our beaches clean andhealthyReduce energy usage district wide through energy efficiency retrofits and staff educationIncrease the number of events permitted under the green permitIncrease overall awareness of Park District green initiatives96
