LAMBEAU FIELDHALLOWED GROUNDCOMMUNITYADMIN. &COACHESVETERANSDRAFT &FREE AGENTS2010 REVIEWRECORDS &HISTORYLAMBEAUFIELDMISC.One of the National Football League’s most reveredstadiums, Lambeau Field this year is hosting its 55thseason of football.A year-round destination venue to be enjoyed byPackers fans in a variety of ways on an everyday basis,it underwent a dramatic facelift that added a host of newamenities and attractions. The conclusion of the redevelopmentproject was marked by a rededication game, Sept.7, 2003, against longtime divisional rival Minnesota.Featuring the only true “retro” look in the entire league, the glorious tradition and history of the Packers iscarried forward in the “like-new” LambeauField with its heart – the original seatingbowl – saved. The same hallowedground where many of theNFL’s greatest moments havetranspired continues to exist, acanvas where current playerscan paint their own memoriesin future years. At the same time, thestructure has been transformedfrom a football stadiumthat fans could use only10 days during the season to aPackers cultural center that can beenjoyed throughout the year. Withinthe five-story Lambeau Field Atrium, located on the stadium’s east side, is the25,000-square-footHall of Fame, corporate meetingand event facilities for 25to 1,200 people, five differenteating options highlightedby a one-of-a-kind brew pub(Curly’s Pub) with interactiveareas, and a larger PackersPro Shop (see page 601-603for a full listing of the Atriumdining, entertainment and retailoptions).Just outside the Atrium inthe Robert E. Harlan Plaza, named in honor of the formerteam CEO (1989-2007), arebronze statues of team founderCurly Lambeau and legendarycoach Vince Lombardi.Sculpted by Julie Rotblatt-Amrany (Lombardi) and OmriAmrany (Lambeau) of Fine ArtStudio of Rotblatt-Amrany inHighland Park, Ill., at a costof more than $400,000, eachstatue is 14 feet tall, atop threefeet of steps and a four-footbase. Put into motion by a county-widereferendum that approved a half-cent sales tax increase onSept. 12, 2000, the project was financed jointly by the cityof Green Bay, county taxpayers, the Packers and the NFL.The Packers’ football facilities – a vital element inattracting players in today’s ultra-competitive NFL – alsowere enhanced greatly by the stadium’s redevelopment, debuting in time for the 2002 season. The centerpiece ofthese quarters is a breathtaking, 64-by-120-foot, footballshapedlocker room with 64 stately wooden lockers.Another 25 lockers can be found in anadjoining, auxiliary locker room, to beutilized during training camp. The new football facilities alsofeature a much larger trainingroom with all of the latesttherapy pools as well asa permanent X-ray machine,a new weight room, individualposition meeting roomswith theatre-style seating, a150-plus-seat team auditorium,a basketball court with a parquetwood floor, a racquetball court,a team dining room and a players’lounge. Not forgetting the Packers’ rich traditionand history at Lambeau Field, then-GM/Head Coach Mike Shermanrequested three slabs of concretethat were located in theteam’s former field tunnel atthe north end – which werewalked over by many of thegreatest players in club history– to be moved to the newtunnel in the southeast corner;the players began usingit during the 2002 season.A nearby plaque recognizesthe presence of the concretefrom the old tunnel. In July 2002, all of theteam’s administrative andfootball-operations officesalso relocated to within theLambeau Field Atrium on thestadium’s east side.Other benefits realizedthrough the redevelopmentproject include a modern systemof field lights that is morethan eight times brighter thanthe previous stadium lights, and a new visiting-teamlocker room. Also, a larger, more comfortable and modernpress box that can seatin excess of 250 media membersfor a playoff game – andpositioned along the sidelines– debuted in 2002. In 2003,the press box was renamed“The Lee Remmel Press Box” in honor of the former newspapersportswriter, Packers public relations director andteam historian. Remmel retired in 2007 after more than 60years of close association with the organization. The Packers continue to upgrade the stadium as well. This season, a distributed audio system that is designed todeliver sound more consistently and evenly throughout thestadium bowl will benefit fans. But,as new stadiums rose throughout the NFL in the 1990s,Lambeau Field became outdated. As a publicly ownedteam, the Packers must generate a significant amount ofincome from their home to remain competitive. Challengeswith capacity, as well as the need for updated suites plusmore club seats, restrooms and concessions, made redevelopmenta necessity.Faced with these challenges, the organization went towork in October 1999, assembling a plan to protect 80years of Packers history and ensure the club’s continuedviability. After several feasibility studies and overwhelmingsupport for renovation, as opposed to building a newstadium, the redevelopment plan was dubbed the propercourse of action. Unveiled in January 2000, the plan ultimatelywon voter approval that September with the hardwork of people committed to preserving Green Bay’sunique franchise.“Our fans overwhelmingly asked us to save LambeauField,” then-President and CEO Bob Harlan said. “This planaccomplishes that while giving the Packers an economicbase to build for the future in Green Bay. We want this tobe the No. 1 destination in Wisconsin. We’re going to builda stadium that the rest of the National Football Leaguewished it had.”Included in the redeveloped stadium are more than11,600 additional seats, including roughly 6,000 morebowl seats, to increase Lambeau’s capacity to 73,128. The stadium’soriginal architect, Somerville Inc.,favored the current site because itwas sloped, making it perfect to builda bowl.Lambeau Field, now in its 55thNFL season, is the longest continuouslyoccupied stadium in the league– 10 years more than the next-closestvenue, Qualcomm Stadium in SanDiego at 45 years. In pro sports asa whole, only the Boston Red Sox atFenway Park (100 seasons) and theChicago Cubs at Wrigley Field (98seasons) have longer active homefieldtenures.Including the redevelopment, eightseating additions – all paid for bythe Green Bay Packers, Inc. – haveincreased Lambeau’s capacity from its original 32,150 to38,669 in 1961, to 42,327 in 1963, to 50,852 in 1965 andto 56,263 in 1970. Construction of 72 initial suites in 1985moved capacity to 56,926, and a 1990 addition of 36 boxesand 1,920 theatre-style club seats changed the number to59,543. The seventh seating addition, a $4.7 million projectin 1995, put 90 more suites in the previously open northend zone, for the first time giving the stadium the feel of acomplete bowl and upping capacity to 60,890.Ultimately, the eighth addition bumped stadium seatingcapacity to 73,128. During the 2002 campaign, with workongoing, capacity fluctuated between 65,290 and 66,110as the season progressed. In 2007, the Packers installed an entirely new playingsurface, including a completely new drainage and heatingsystem, bringing the latest technology in field managementSept. 29, 1957ORIGINAL CONSTRUCTION• Proposal: The Packers’ Fred Leicht, whosupervised the 1925 construction of CityStadium, in May 1955 submitted a proposalfor a new, 32,000-seat facility.• Referendum: Passed April 3, 1956 (11,575to 4,893), while community leaders continueddebate over a site.• Site: In late April 1956, the Packers hiredan engineering company to study proposedlocations. Chief to thenew system is DD GrassMaster, anatural-grass surface reinforced withman-made fibers. All existing levelsof the field were removed and the newsystem began with a clay sub-gradelevel, compacted and graded (with a.6 percent slope), including drain tile, irrigation pipe and thermostat wiringfor the heating system. The secondlevel consists of 5½ inches of peagravel. On top of the gravel layer is30-plus miles of ¾-inch tubing for theheating system which can maintaina root-zone temperature of 55-plus degrees to keep theground from freezing during the season’s latter months.Level three consists of 12 inches of root-zone sand andKentucky bluegrass turf. DD GrassMaster’s synthetic fibersare stitched into the surface, providing strength and stabilityto the field. Fibers extend approximately seven inchesbelow the surface, are exposed approximately one inchabove the surface, and are spaced every three-quarters ofan inch. Approximately 20 million individual stitches makeup the process. The slope equates to a crown of about 5½inches on the new surface. Also prominent within the stadium are the names ofthe 21 Packers players and coaches elected to the ProFootball Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The Packers’ 13 NFLChampionship seasons (southeast corner) and five retiredjersey numbers (north end zone) are on the facade as well.THE LAMBEAU BOWLOne of Lambeau’s special characteristics is its classic seating bowl, now exclusive to Green Bay. The bowl design, common inmany traditional college football stadiums, remains virtually untouched following a $295-million stadium renovation. Did you know…• The original architectural firm, Somerville Inc., favoredthe Lambeau construction site because it sloped, perfectfor building a bowl.• The bowl’s outstanding sightlines are generally creditedto Dick Gustafson, who worked closely with John Somervilleduring the design phase.• Some of Gustafson’s inspiration came from MichiganStadium in Ann Arbor, where he went to college.• Despite seating more than 62,713 (including an additional6,601 from the recent renovation), the bowl still offersthe NFL’s highest percentage of great seats. Somervillecredits that intimacy to the fact that the stadium was thefirst in the world designed exclusively for pro football.• The original stadium district instructed Somerville todesign a facility that could easily expand, and allow for offseasonconstruction projects to be completed by August.• The first significant project came just one year after thestadium’s opening campaign. Workers replaced the originalwooden bleachers with aluminum benches beforethe 1958 season.

In December 2006, the facade’s northeast corner becamehome to the name of Ron Wolf, the former Packers generalmanager (1991-2001). Bob Harlan, then CEO, had thename installed, in a new tradition, separate from the ProFootball Hall of Famers, so that Wolf could be recognizedin a way that is befitting of his enormous legacy with theorganization.Lambeau Field is among the NFL’s toughest placesto play. Green Bay holds a 114-38 (.750) regular-seasonrecord at Lambeau since 1992, plus an 8-3 mark in theplayoffs, for an overall record of 122-41 (.748). Evenmore imposing, the Packers have won 114 of their last151 games in Green Bay (including the eight postseasonvictories), since Oct. 10, 1993.In the midst of nearly four full seasons at home withouta defeat – prior to a 1998 Monday night loss to Minnesota, their last setback at Lambeau had come in the 1995 seasonopener – the Packers established the NFL’s second-longesthome winning streak (25). Only the Miami Dolphins (1971-74) have won more consecutive regular-season homegames (27).Over the past two decades, prior to the start of theredevelopment project, the Packers organization itselfhad spent more than $50 million on improvements to thestadium, the previous club administration building andtraining facilities, including construction of the originalindoor practice structure in 1982 and its replacement, theDon Hutson Center, in 1994 at a cost of nearly $4.7 million.Recent improvements include DD GrassMaster surfaces onpractice fields, Clarke Hinkle Field (2006) and Ray NitschkeField (2009). Nitschke Field also has a new seating facilityfor fans attending training-camp practices.Lambeau Field now is owned by the city of Green Bayand the Green Bay/Brown County Professional FootballStadium District; retirement of the city’s original $960,000debt was celebrated at a mortgage-burning ceremony inMay of 1978.Sold out on a season-ticket basis since 1960 (293consecutive games at the start of 2011, including playoffs)Lambeau was not the Packers’ only regular-season homeuntil 1995. Thereweren’t even any seats, and admission was free. From 1919-56, the Packers played their Green Bay games –including their first league contest – at virtually the same address.Their first home games were at Hagemeister Park, a vacant lotmarked with a football gridiron, adjacent to East High. There were no gates because there wasn’t a fence. By moving as play progressed, one always had a “50-yard line”location and was handy for any donnybrook that might require a littlehelp. In fact, when things got exciting, the crowd sometimes spilledright onto the field, surrounded the scrimmage in a big circle andvirtually took part in every play. Teams didn’t huddle in those days,or the fans would have been in that, too. When the half ended, teams grabbed blankets and adjourned toopposite end zones where they relaxed and talked over the tacticsof the next half. The crowd formed a ringaround the players, a practice encouragedsince it made a handy wind break. Fansweren’t bashful about joining the discussionseither, sometimes with surprising results. LAMBEAU FIELDCITY STADIUMBellevue obviously was inadequate and too farout, lacking about every amenity needed for football.Agitation to build a new stadium somewherenear the original site culminated in the erection ofCity Stadium, behind the new high school. The new facility was barely completed in time forthe 1925 opening, but it was an immediate success(the Bears opener drew a record crowd of 5,389). Itwas a typical small-town park of its day (pictured atbottom), with wooden fences and stands on bothsides between the 30-yard lines. Seating capacitywas gradually increased until it seated 15,000 by1934, with the end zones still uncovered. With thefilling in of the area around the end lines, the ultimatecapacity of just over 25,000 was reached (inset atleft, middle photo). After World War II, City Stadium gradually fadedfrom its once proud position as one of the favoredfields in the National Football League, to an inadequateand obsolete installation. As pro crowdsincreased, it was impossible to expand the stadiumany further. With limited capacity, the Packers foundit increasingly difficult to schedule topopponents at home. On Nov. 18, 1956,the Packers lost their final game at the stadium,to the 49ers. A new City Stadium, onGreen Bay’s west side, opened the followingyear (renamed Lambeau Field in 1965).MILWAUKEEThe decision to play games inMilwaukee (including State Fair Park, above inset; and County Stadium, aboveright) played a key role in the Packers’survival.
