<strong>HYWEL</strong> <strong>DDA</strong> <strong>NHS</strong> <strong>TRUST</strong><strong>PRESS</strong> <strong>RELEASE</strong><strong>FAO</strong>: The EditorDATE: 23 June 2009Best of health staff awardsLocal unsung heroes of the health service have been recognised for theircontribution to patient care at Hywel Dda <strong>NHS</strong> Trust’s Beast of <strong>Health</strong> StaffAwards.The ceremony was held at West <strong>Wales</strong> General Hospital on Tuesday and wasattended by more than 70 staff from across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion andPembrokeshire.W<strong>in</strong>ners and nom<strong>in</strong>ees came from a range of discipl<strong>in</strong>es - from doctors andnurses to IT specialists and librarians - represent<strong>in</strong>g the huge field of careersavailable <strong>in</strong> the <strong>NHS</strong> and the contribution they all make to deliver<strong>in</strong>g patientcare and sav<strong>in</strong>g lives.The awards scheme is organised by the Trust <strong>in</strong> order to recognise andreward staff who go the extra mile <strong>in</strong> their day-to-day work. Nom<strong>in</strong>ations were<strong>in</strong>vited from staff, patients, carers, relatives, GPs, voluntary groups and thegeneral public.Chief Executive Mart<strong>in</strong> Turner said: “We are extremely grateful and proud ofthe work carried out by our staff – they really are our greatest asset. Thisevent provides us with an opportunity to thank and recognise some of theexemplarily work that is carried out by <strong>in</strong>dividuals and teams and to take stockof the positive impact this has on our patients’ lives.”Chairman Chris Mart<strong>in</strong> added: “It was a really humbl<strong>in</strong>g experience to readthe award entries, which were of an extremely high standard. Choos<strong>in</strong>g thew<strong>in</strong>ners was a very reward<strong>in</strong>g but difficult task.”The Chief Executive’s Award for Outstand<strong>in</strong>g Service Innovation orExcellence <strong>in</strong> Improv<strong>in</strong>g Patient Care or Experience was awarded to theTrust’s Intra-Vitreal Lucentis Service, which treats Wet Age Related MaculaDegeneration.AMD is the biggest cause of sight loss <strong>in</strong> the UK, affect<strong>in</strong>g the olderpopulations, and is the most common cause of bl<strong>in</strong>dness and partial sight <strong>in</strong>England and <strong>Wales</strong>. Lucentis is a relatively new drug, given by <strong>in</strong>tra-vitreal<strong>in</strong>jection, and not rout<strong>in</strong>ely available for use <strong>in</strong> the <strong>NHS</strong>. A team of cl<strong>in</strong>iciansand managers from the Trust and Local <strong>Health</strong> Board developed a robustbus<strong>in</strong>ess case for the development of these services for patients <strong>in</strong> HywelDda <strong>NHS</strong> Trust.


The service began <strong>in</strong> June 2008 at Amman Valley Hospital and a cl<strong>in</strong>ic hass<strong>in</strong>ce opened <strong>in</strong> Aberystwyth to treat patients specifically for Ceredigion,South Gwynedd and Powys and to reduce patient travell<strong>in</strong>g times. The teamare now progress<strong>in</strong>g plans for a treatment centre <strong>in</strong> Pembrokeshire.Feedback from patients has been excellent, as the service is giv<strong>in</strong>g patientshope and the opportunity to have therapy which can improve vision <strong>in</strong> up to athird of cases.Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Mr Manoj Kulshrestha, who accepted theaward on behalf of the team, said: “It is satisfy<strong>in</strong>g to see patients who thoughtthey were <strong>in</strong>itially go<strong>in</strong>g bl<strong>in</strong>d to be read<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>, or stabilis<strong>in</strong>g their vision.
