Community DevelopmentYouth Leagues BoomTHE FLAGSHIP INITIATIVE of the club’sCommunity Development Programme, theU16 and U17 Fremantle Football Club YouthLeagues proved to be a fantastic addition tothe Junior Football Landscape in 2004.In 2005 the Youth League has furtherexpanded to include the junior competitionsin Albany and Esperance in the south of WAand the club provides resources, support andexpertise to all junior competitions involvedin both the 16’s and 17’s leagues.Aimed at improving the retention level ofyoung footballers in the game, the FremantleFootball Club Youth League encompasses all17s competition’s in the metropolitan WAFLdistricts while the 16s competition expandsacross the Southern Districts Junior FootballAssociation to include Peel, Albany, Esperanceand the South West regions.A key feature of the youth leagues this yearhas been the scheduling of selected games ascurtain raisers prior to each of the Fremantlehome games with Huntingdale, Kenwick,Noranda, Bibra Lake, West Coast, Roleystone,Booragoon/Applecross, Rostrata, AlbanyDemons, Lions, Blues, Saints and EsperanceNewtown, Vikings, Gibson and Port teams allenjoying the once in a lifetime opportunity oftaking centre stage on Subiaco Oval.Teams that have travelled from Albany andEsperance have also enjoyed tours of theFremantle headquarters, having a trainingsession on Fremantle Oval, use of the club’srehabilitation pool and enjoying a BBQput on by the club’s dedicated volunteers.Special thanks goes to WAFL clubs Subiacoand Claremont for providing the sleepingheadquarters for Esperance and Albanyteams respectively.MelbourneJunior MembersVICTORIAN MEMBERS and supporters hada sensational weekend in round six, when theteam not only defeated the in-form Melbourneat the MCG but also had the chance to meetthe players when they attended the MelbourneJunior Members Clinic at Keilor Park on Sunday1st May.More than 200 junior members attended theclinic and had a fantastic time, with kicking,handpassing and other fun footy drills andgames, as well as the chance to be up closewith their heroes and getting that much soughtafter autograph or photograph.AS PART OF THE CLUB’S CommunityDevelopment Programme, the School ofthe Week initiative has again been a hugesuccess in 2005. The club has committedmore than $250,000 to further developand expand the Community DevelopmentProgramme and the School of the Weekinitiative provides a fantastic opportunity forschools from right across WA to get activelyinvolved with Fremantle Football Club.The School of the Week programme givesprimary school children the opportunity eachweek of coming to the popular ‘People’s Night’Training session on Tuesdays at FremantleOval. The programme is also open to juniorfootball clubs.Once at the club, children have a fantastictime as they participate in a skills clinic, viewa highlights video in the players lecture theatre,watch team training, get that much soughtafter player autograph or photo and have aclass photo taken with a Fremantle player.The once in a lifetime opportunity has lit upthe faces of more than 2,000 children fromSouth Perth PS, South Fremantle PS, OreliaPS, Newton PS, Maddington PS, ApplecrossJunior Football Club, Fremantle PS, Mt BarkerPS, Maddington PS, Aquinas Junior, AdamRoad PS, St Patricks PS, Greenfields PS, OurLady of Mount Carmel PS, Cowaramup PS,Little Grove PS, Booragoon PS, Mt MagnetPS, and Scarborough Junior Football Club, alljoining in the fun at ‘People’s Night’ Trainingso far this year.42 Docker July 2005 fremantlefc.com.au
