This award, formerly given to someone for distinguished service toJewry, is now given to an individual or an organization that has touched Jewish lives. 197The award is named for Dr. Richard James Horatio Gottheil, an eminent Columbiaprofessor who was instrumental in ZBT's founding. As one of the first Jewish professorsat Columbia, Gottheil advocated for the Jewish student body. Gottheil concluded hisfinal statement to the fraternity, directly prior to his death, with, "Long live Jewry! LongLive Zionism! And long live Zeta Beta Tau!
