Ida Bienstock Landau, Minna Goldsmith Mahler, Eva Efron Robyn and Sylvia StiermanCohn, known as the DIMES, created a sorority that would creategood fellowship among sorority women studentsthroughout the various colleges of this country...to create asecret society composed of these women based upon theirgood moral character, regardless of nationality or creed 88Though they founded a non-sectarian sorority, each of the DIMES went on to lead Jewishlives. For example, Ida Bienstock Landau, served as an assistant general manager for theJewish Telegraphic Agency, and helped relocate Jewish survivors and refugees afterWorld War I. In 1921 she married Jacob Landau, a Viennese, and lost her U.SCitizenship and her right to practice law. At this time, American women lost theircitizenship upon marrying a non-citizen. She petitioned congress, and as a result of theattention she brought to her case, the U.S adopted the Cable Act or Case Act, whichallowed American women to maintain their citizenship even if married to a foreigner. 89Despite the founders' Jewish pride, Delta Phi Epsilon remained adamantly Non-Sectarian.Though both sororities claimed to be non-sectarian, they were only incorporated into theNational Panhellenic Council along with the Jewish sororities in 1952, previously barredfrom the council until that year. The National Panhellenic held that if they "admit theJews, we'll have to take the niggers." 90 Like the fraternities, even though the nonsectariansororities admitted Gentile sorors, few wanted to break their bread or live withJews.88 Delta Phi Epislon New Member Orientation Manaul89 IDA BIENSTOCK LANDAU - Obituary - NYTimes.com," The New York Times - Breaking News,World News & Multimedia, May 07, 1986, section goes here, accessed April 28, 2011,http://www.nytimes.com/1986/05/07/obituaries/ida-bienstock-landau.html.90 Sanua, 19322
