as laying the table, doing dishes, taking out the
garbage and similar things that the other children
in the family do.
Do i get credit in my home country for
the school year abroad?
Generally, courses taken while on exchange do
not count for credit. However, you should consult
with a school counselor prior to departure
to see whether your school might grant credit
for some of the courses taken while away.
What subjects will i study?
This varies depending on your program country
and the school. Typically, the school will require
you to study certain mandatory subjects and
then you will be able to choose a couple optional
courses. Examples of subjects that are
often mandatory are history, English, a foreign
language and mathematics.
How big of a school will i attend?
STS works with both big and small schools. New
schools are added every year so we cannot say
in advance what size of school a student will
attend.
Will the students be able to graduate
and get a high school diploma?
This is up to the school board of the school in
question. STS cannot influence this decision.
Will i be able to practise my favourite
sports?
If a particular sport or another special interest
is important to you, you should bring this up in
the student letter so that we may take this into
account when placing you. We will do our best
to accommodate these wishes but we cannot
guarantee anything. The time abroad will also
give you the opportunity to try a number of
new and exciting sports as well as other activities.
What about spending money?
The student’s natural parents agree to send
adequate spending money. This money should
be enough for clothing, social activites, trips,
school expenses, and telephone calls to the
home country. It might be a good idea if the host
family helps the student set up a bank account
to help them keep their money in a safe place.
am i allowed to travel in the host
country or will there be organised
tours with leaders and other exchange
students?
You may travel with your host family, school,
church or similar organised trips, but not on your
own or with friends. Each year, STS organises
trips and get-togethers for the students. These
optional trips provide plenty of opportunities
to travel throughout the students host country
and meet other exchange students from other
parts of the world. The optional tours are offered
to the students at an additional fee. Availability
and cost often depend on the number
of participants. You will get information about
such tours while on the program.
