<strong>Tanzania</strong> Cultural Tourism ProgramThe Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g1995: Young Maasai approached <strong>SNV</strong> and the <strong>Tanzania</strong> TouristBoard (TTB) for support<strong>in</strong>g a tourism <strong>in</strong>itiative as <strong>in</strong>comeopportunity for them.1996- 2001: TTB and <strong>SNV</strong> responded by develop<strong>in</strong>g a fiveyears program to support local tourism <strong>in</strong>itiatives withfocus on Northern <strong>Tanzania</strong>.2000: CTP receives ToDo!99 award for sociallyresponsible tourism at ITB Berl<strong>in</strong>.7

<strong>Tanzania</strong> Cultural Tourism ProgramLessons learnt and suggestionsfor further improvement:• Need for cont<strong>in</strong>ued capacity build<strong>in</strong>g: <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>essmanagement, ICT, product packag<strong>in</strong>g, negotiation skills,market <strong>in</strong>telligence, PR, market<strong>in</strong>g, hospitality tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<strong>in</strong>terpretative skills, languages, food process<strong>in</strong>g etc.• Functional network establishment: strengthenumbrella organisation for CTP members for future<strong>in</strong>dependent advocacy, quality standards and market<strong>in</strong>gpurposes.• Establish monitor<strong>in</strong>g system: Record keep<strong>in</strong>g etc.• Access to f<strong>in</strong>ance: Seed capital for facilityimprovements on site, expansions and <strong>in</strong>dividualmarket<strong>in</strong>g.• Support for local producers and suppliers foraccess<strong>in</strong>g tourism markets even beyond CTP.18
