MAKING CAR SHARING AND CAR CLUBS WORKCASE STUDY SUMMARIES13 CHESTER BUSINESS PARKGeneral Background13.1 <strong>The</strong> Chester Business Park is on the A483 approximately 2 miles south of Chester citycentre <strong>and</strong> within 0.5 miles from the junction with the A55. It is close to Chester South Park<strong>and</strong> Ride. Bus links to the city centre <strong>and</strong> rail station, direct from the Business Park aregood, every 15 minutes before 9.00 a.m. <strong>and</strong> every 10 minutes after 10.00 a.m. <strong>The</strong>journey time from the station is approximately 15 minutes.13.2 <strong>The</strong> Park was built to emulate US-style business parks. It is on the edge of town, close tomajor road networks, with wide boulevards for car access, plenty of green space, limitedpedestrian routes <strong>and</strong> little thought for public transport use. <strong>The</strong> Park currently has 7,500employees working for 25 different companies. This is projected to increase to 12,000employees by 2007. MBNA Europe Bank <strong>and</strong> Marks <strong>and</strong> Spencers Money are the twolargest employers on the Park.13.3 <strong>The</strong> main drivers for introducing travel planning <strong>and</strong> car sharing have been: Congestion – it was taking 30 minutes to get on to the A55.Parking – l<strong>and</strong> costs, car parking building costs, <strong>and</strong> planning restrictions on parking.13.4 <strong>The</strong> Park has its own travel plan initiative: Smartways. It works with other companies onsite to develop public transport offers, <strong>and</strong> is trying to launch a park-wide car share scheme– so far only 6 employees have signed up.
