MAKING CAR SHARING AND CAR CLUBS WORKCASE STUDY SUMMARIESunlimited use, which is considered to be a cheap cost for travel. <strong>The</strong> quality of publictransport vehicle is high, with many alternatively fuelled vehicles (including ethanol <strong>and</strong> fuelcell powered vehicles).Integration with Other Schemes24.10 <strong>The</strong> car club is well integrated with other transport modes. <strong>The</strong> smart card can be used forall City Taxi journeys, <strong>and</strong> the operators are currently looking to integrate with the publictransport operators (some initial technical problems are currently being examined in detail).Marketing <strong>and</strong> Promotion24.11 A mobility centre is due to be launched in early 2005 that will promote the implementation ofcar clubs in all 17 districts in Stockholm. This centre will coordinate all promotional materialincluding posters, fliers, e-mails <strong>and</strong> radio / TV advertisements.Research <strong>and</strong> Development24.12 <strong>The</strong> long term aim for car clubs in Sweden is for the private scheme developers to run <strong>and</strong>develop <strong>and</strong> manage all schemes (i.e a migration away from some of the publicly runinitiatives). This includes the private operators <strong>and</strong> cooperatives. <strong>The</strong> main mechanism forthis promotion will be through tax incentives, the delivery of low cost dedicated parking, <strong>and</strong>strong on-going political support.Support/Consultation24.13 One of the key drivers of success has been the strong level of political support. <strong>The</strong> privatecar club operators developing the market in Stockholm do not receive any level of financialsupport / subsidy, but the political backing, including tax incentives for car club membership,ensures the prospect for further developments remain strong.User Perceptions24.14 <strong>The</strong> system has proven to be very reliable <strong>and</strong> is well liked by the end users. Full usersurveys have been recently completed, <strong>and</strong> will be reported in the final MOSES deliverable(due in January 2005). <strong>The</strong> two user groups most likely to use the car club are:young / well educated couples, often with small children; <strong>and</strong>well educated professionals in the 40/50 year age bracket.Final V1.1, Dec. 2004 - 140 -
