MAKING CAR SHARING AND CAR CLUBS WORKCASE STUDY SUMMARIESSuccesses / Failures2.8 The car sharing scheme has solved the immediate car parking problems facing Barclaycard. The number of complaints about car parking is down, there are less instances of parking onthe approach roads to Barclaycard HQ and dangerous car parking on the verges around theroundabout leading to the main road has ceased.2.9 The car sharing draw drew attention to the scheme. Discussions with staff indicate that itwas the access to guaranteed car parking in a well-located car park that acted as the spurfor staff to start car sharing.2.10 Barclaycard does not monitor how staff who have chosen to car share used to travel. Thecar sharing scheme may have reduced the number of staff travelling to the Business Park bypublic transport. Two staff, interviewed for this research, formerly travelled to work on thebus and now travel to work by car, getting a lift from a colleague. However, both of thesestaff still travel home on the bus, because their car sharing partner finishes work at adifferent time.Supporting Measures / Alternative Approaches Considered2.11 Barclaycard has improved cycling facilities and set up a Transport Change Forum for staff. The Forum was developed following an Ideas Week, looking for solutions to the car parkingproblems. The first prize was a weekend for two in New York. About ten different practicalideas emerged, including car sharing, charging for car parking, and ‘blocking-in’ bays. These are bays used by staff who work part-time or regularly finish work before 5 p.m. Staffparking in the blocking-in bays have to leave a card on the dashboard giving a contacttelephone number, so that the car can be moved quickly if the blocked-in partner has aproblem and needs to use their car.2.12 Barclaycard at Northampton applied for support with their travel plan development from theEnergy Efficiency Best Practice Programme, but there was no cash left in the EEBPP budgetat the time. Barclaycard is looking to apply to the Transport Energy Programme for supportwith the development of a travel plan at their Tyneside Office, soon to be relocated.Final V1.1, Dec. 2004 - 8 -
