parentguidekids & tennis: a natural fitTennis is one of the most popular sports in the United States and the secondmost-played sport worldwide. Free or low-cost courts are available in nearlyevery community at schools and parks, and organized programs for kids arecommon throughout the country. All a child needs to get started is a racquetand some tennis balls. The cost of an introductory racquet and balls is extremelyreasonable, making the starting expense of playing tennis among the lowestof any sport.Research shows that tennis is also one of the best and most enjoyable waysto become healthy and fit. The very nature of the game of serving, returningand rallying makes tennis an active sport with plenty of movement, starts, stopsand direction changes.Tennis is a great cardiovascular activity, and the movements used on the courtdevelop balance, agility and coordination.Mental focus is sharpened because decision-making and concentration isnecessary every time a ball is hit. It is also one of the safest of all sports andhas a very low rate of injury compared to other youth sports.>Tennis provides a place for youngsters to make new acquaintances andstrengthen existing relationships with family and friends. It teaches theimportance of physical, emotional and mental fitness; of making good

GoalsIt is important to keep participation in youth sports in perspectiveand to understand why kids play. Many times adults have grandideas of a professional career or even a college scholarship. Whilethese could be long-term goals for those players who eventuallyspecialize in a sport, children play for different reasons. They wantto be active, be with friends, develop skills and, most importantly, have fun.As parents, one of the most important things you can do is to helpyour children discover their interests and provide experiences thatdevelop a love of the game. For new players it is not about winning, rankings and trophies, but playing, being with their friends, makingnew friends, being active and developing their skills. It might beparticipating on a team and having pizza after a match or practice. It might be going to a local college match or taking a trip with momand dad to a professional tournament.>When 28,000 boys and girls were asked in a study about whythey played sports, the top answer was “fun’” followed by “to dosomething I am good at” and “to improve my skills.”

play opportunitiesThere is a starting point for every child who is introduced to tennis. The firstexperience might be on a playground with friends, or it may be in the driveway witha parent or family member. Really, it could be in any numberof settings—at school during physical education class, duringrecess, or in a before- or after-school program. Many youthprogram providers also offer tennis, generally in after-school orsummer programs, and introductory tennis classes are commonin most communities in Coloado and are typically offered byparks, camps or clubs. However it happens, once your child has that first experienceand develops a perceived level of ability—the thought that,“Hey, I can do this”—it is important to identify opportunities foryour child to participate. Here are several possibilities that areall great for kids.Spontaneous PlayAn opportunity often overlooked in our highly scheduled society is spontaneousplay. This is where kids can learn and play either by themselves or with other kids. Itcould be hitting balls against a wall or garage door, or by setting up modified courtsthat fit into smaller or more restricted spaces.Kids in other youth sports shoot baskets, kick or throw balls in the backyard orskateboard down the sidewalk and off the curb. Playing tennis with foam balls ona modified court can provide endless hours of activity and fun. It is interesting tonote that champions in many other sports spent most of their developmental yearslearning from others and playingspontaneously.Previously this was difficult becausekids only had options of playingon the same-sized court and withthe same ball that the pros use. TheQuickStart Tennis Play format usesequipment that is scaled to the size ofthe child. Racquets are shorter, lighterand have smaller handles. Balls aresofter, lighter, bounce lower andmove slower through the air. Courtsare smaller and the net is lower. This makes it possible for kids to learn by playingrather than having to learn all the strokes before they even play the game.coloradotennis.comDriveway TennisSmaller courts can be set up on driveways, parking lots, playgrounds, activityrooms, gymnasiums and even on tennis courts using sidewalk chalk for lines and arope or “caution tape” as a net. Several manufacturers make pop-up nets that areportable and can easily be set up and disassembled.Wall TennisHitting balls against a wall or garage door has a rich tradition in our sport. Manychampions have grooved their strokes by hitting balls against a wall. With the ballsmodified so they are lighter, slower and lower bouncing (red, orange and greenballs), hitting against a wall is easier, safer and allows a child to take a full swing atthe ball and still have time to recover and prepare for the next shot.2011 big book of colorado tennis17parentguide

the parent’s roleLearning to play and enjoy the sport of tennis is one of the greatestgifts you can give your child. Tennis is almost unmatched in the physicalactivity it provides kids and players of all ages. As children go throughthe process of becoming a player, they will have numerous experiencesthat will serve as life lessons and create teachable moments. Childrenwill have different levels of success so make sure to be positive, patientand encouraging, and to reward their efforts. Your most important jobis to make the game fun for both you and your child. They will modelyour behavior so smile, have fun, be encouraging and positive in toneand body language.Parents play a very important role in selecting a program and acoach. Once those decisions have been made, the parent shouldconcentrate on being a supportive and encouraging role model andleave the teaching to the coaches.Let them be responsible forteaching the physical and mentalskills necessary for winning.Parents should concentrateon developing those life skillsthat develop character—suchas respect, effort, self-control,dedication, overcoming mistakesand adapting to the conditions—and will carry over into what yourchild becomes as an adult.< >It has been said that sport does not build character, it reveals it. Tennis providesmany opportunities for kids to learn and develop character by playing by therules, making their own line calls, respecting officials and opponents, learning towin humbly and lose graciously. These are all teachable moments, and parentsshould take these opportunities to teach character at the highest standard. Finally, a positive experience of learning, playing and competing, and the enjoyment your child will have on the tennis court, drivewayor hitting wall will be one of the great memories your child will takeinto adulthood. Tennis is a great gift—and one that every parent canprovide to his or her child.parentguidecoloradotennis.com2011 big book of colorado tennis19

Clubs, parks, schools and HOAs around the state have already begun preparing for the 2012rule change. In an effort to assist facilities looking to stripe for 36'- and 60'-lines and/orbuilding permanent courts, the USTA is offering a 50/50 grant up to $4,000.Info at USTA.com/technical.coloradotennis.comsize mattersIn a decision that will fundamentallychange the future landscape of tennis inthe US, the USTA has required that beginningin 2012, all 10 & Under tennis tournamentsand leagues must incorporatethe QuickStart Tennis format, using ageappropriateballs and racquets, smallercourts and lower nets. Even the scoringwill change for the youngest competitors. The new rules are structured for kids tolearn, rally and play quickly, and in a waythat is both enjoyable and rewarding.Tailoring equipment and courts so theyare sized appropriately for kids makesthe game more accessible —and morefun—by allowing kids to get involvedright from the start.2011 big book of colorado tennis21parentguide

ADULTLEAGUESADULTLEAGUESEVEN after 30 years,COLORADO adult league TENNISstill EXPERIENCING growing pains.Offering one of the nation's largest recreational tennis menus, the USTA Colorado Adult League Tennis Series is a thirty-yearsuccess story. The four hallmarks of league tennis have helped fuel the continuedpopularity of the program for three decades: competition, fun, fitness/health and social. Add to these the fact that playerscan continue to enjoy all of them well into their golden years andyou’ve got a recipe for long-term growth.Since their inception in 1980, adult leagues have grownalmost every year. In 2010, more than 30,000 Colorado playerscompeted in the adult league series, an 8% increase over theprevious year, and one of the largest increases ever recorded.Leading the way in this tremendous growth were USTA Adult,USTA Senior, USTA Super Senior and CTA Twilight leagues. To put the local league tennis series into perspective, considerthis: the Denver metro area ranks as the second largest in thenation behind tennis hotbed Atlanta. With more than 23,000league players, Denver is more than double the size of the thirdlargest area (which is also located in the Southern Section).Colorado's 30,000+ league players ranks ahead of the entireSouthern California section!Equally impressive is the fact that over the three days of theUSTA Adult District Championships, nearly 1,200 matches wereplayed. Again, to add perspective, only 800 matches werecontested during the 2010 US Open, and that event lasted twofull weeks. The sheer size and scope of the Adult League Series is impressive, and continued growth is a benefit to both players andfacilities. But due to infrastructure limitations, parks and clubsare being forced to get creative with their league scheduling. Aswe move a bit further into the 2010s, USTA Colorado will beexploring different ways to ensure a quality experience for allleague players. In addition to format changes, USTA Colorado is actively workingin communities across the state to increase and enhance ourtennis infrastructure, not only to accommodate current growth, but to encourage future growth as well.22 2011 big book of colorado tennis coloradotennis.com

Flight Playoffs:adult/twilight move to flight playoffsOur goal with all of USTA Colorado's league playoffs—conducted at no additional cost/fee for those whoadvance—is to provide the best experience possible andto ensure that we run a quality Championship. Since thereis not sufficient indoor court space available primarily forUSTA Adult or CTA Twilight, the decision has been madeto make modifications that will allow us to continue toprovide an outstanding experience for all players involvedeven if we experience inclement weather. So in an effort to "rain-proof" our two largest playoffevents, USTA Adult and CTA Twilight leagues will featurea flight playoff beginning the week after the last regularseason match. The flight playoff will determine whichteams advance to round robin play at each league'sColorado District Championships. This will happen wheneverthere is more than one flight at a specified NTRPlevel within a geographic area. For example, if there aretwo flights of 4.0 women’s teams in Colorado Springs, the winning team from each flight will play each other forthe single spot into Districts. If there are 20 flights of 4.0women in Denver, the winning teams will be paired up insingle elimination competition, with the 10 winning teamsadvancing to Districts. The rationale for this change is the fact that these twoevents have grown to the point that we are not able tosecure enough indoor courts to conduct them, should therebe delays due to inclement weather.Organizers and players were very fortunate in 2010to have good weather. With more than 108 courts usedfor the first two days—including a big chunk of the metroarea's indoor courts—any bad weather would havecreated enormous and insurmountable problems for theschedulers. We anticipate that this format change will help usmanage any weather problems that we face during theChampionships, and allow us to continue to provide thebest possible playoff experience to our league players.Changes to Match FormatDenver Metro onlyPlayers on each court will still have the ability to playthe third set out in its entirety for 2011; however, if anyoneon the court would prefer to play a 10-point matchtiebreak in lieu of the third set, it is required to be played. It is now required for all players on the court to agree tocoloradotennis.comcontinued on page 24 >>TWO MILLIONHANDSHAKESThe 4 Hallmarks of aGreat Local Pro Shop:Expertise.Relationship.Service.Community.Serving tennis players since 1979.Stop by to see what he looks like 30 years later.2011 big book of colorado tennis23ADULTLEAGUES

TOURNAMENTGUIDEtournamentguidefinding the right event:Many factors can help determine the right event for you or your child.Age, skill level, fitness and length of tournament can all be deciding factorsin determining which tournaments you should enter.USTA Colorado endorses/sanctions events that meet certain USTA criteriafor quality and consistency. Only Sanctioned Event results count towardstate rankings and NTRP ratings. Non-sanctioned tournament results do notfactor toward a state ranking, nor do their results factor into a player’s rating. All Adult, Senior and Wheelchair Sanctioned Tournaments require acurrent USTA membership, as do Junior Championship and Satellite events.Junior Novice and non-Sanctioned events do not require a USTA membership.Selected tournaments have been Designated so as to guarantee qualityranking information by forcing more head-to-head competition amongColorado's top players in a particular division. For a complete listing of2011 Designated Tournaments, please see page 47.Here's some basic information about the types of events Colorado hasto offer:Junior Tournaments:Junior tournaments are designed to offer a wide variety of formats andaccommodate players of virtually any age and skill level. Many eventsoffer guaranteed matches—round robins, compass draws, consolationbrackets—to ensure that players are getting the most from their experience.Beginning in 2012, all USTA tournaments featuring 10 and underdivisions will utilize the QuickStart format. For more information onhow the rules have changed for 10 and under players, please visit10ANDUNDERTENNIS.com.Novice:If your youngster is just learning the game, s/he would be right at homeat a Novice tourmanent. Novice events offer learning players the opportunityto experience tournament play and competition in a supportiveand non-threatening environment.Novice players have no previous competitive experience in tournamentplay (above the novice level), and have typically played tennis for twoyears or less. Because these events are non-sanctioned, a USTA membershipis not required and results do not count towards rankings. This year, nearly two dozen junior novice tournaments are beingoffered, nearly half of which will be offering the QuickStart Tennis formatfor 10 and under divisions.Satellite:Intermediate-level players with some experience will be right at homein satellite tournaments. These events offer junior players the opportunityto experience the next level of competitive play. More than 40 satelliteevents are being offered in 2011.Acting as a bridge between Novice and Championship-level events,Satellite events cater to players with one to three years of beginningcompetitive experience (i.e., novice tournaments, CARA, novice or38 2011 big book of colorado tennis coloradotennis.com

Player reached:a) the quarterfinals of a Designated Championship tournament(in-district), orb) the semifinals of any sanctioned Championship tournamentevent (in-district).A Satellite Ineligibility List will be published annuallybased on the prior year’s results. The Seeding & RankingCommittee periodically may determine additional playersto be ineligible for Satellite level play based on recentChampionship or Satellite tournament results. Players arestrongly encouraged to play within their age group in theChampionship level rather than playing up an age groupin the Satellite level. The Seeding and Ranking Committeewill consider written appeals from players for the Satelliteineligible list until April 12, 2011.Junior Championship:The Championship level is designed for the juniorplayer who is seeking the highest level of junior competitionin Colorado. Satellite players who are seekingmore advanced tournament play may also compete atthis level. Players listed on the 2011 Satellite IneligibleList—published on coloradotennis.com in March2011—are required to play at this level. Juniors seekingto compete at the Sectional and National levels areencouraged to compete in Championship-level events. There are nearly 50 championship-level tournamentsoffered in 2011.Adult Tournaments:Adult tournament participation has been steadily climbingfor the past half-dozen years, as more and more players arediscovering the competitive and social fun of tournament tennis. There are several types of events—NTRP, Senior/Familyand Championship.NTRP/Championship:Designed to pit players of compatible skill against oneanother. NTRP levels range from 2.5 to 5.0 Note: playersrated above 5.0 are required to play in the Opendivision; any junior player 18 & under MUST play in theOpen division, unless the player turns 19 by December31, 2011. They are then eligible to compete in an NTRPevent, but must contact the Tournament Director for entry. You may play at or above your specific NTRP level, butnot below your rating. If you don't have a current rating, you may self-rate and play in that division. For informationon NTRP ratings, see COLORADOTENNIS.com.Senior/Family Events:Also called age division events, Senior events pit players30 and older against similarly aged competitors. InFamily events, the only requirement is that the partners berelated (there are no upper or lower age limits). But beaware: there are no skill parameters in Senior or Familyevents. A player in the draw may be an expert, a novice,or anywhere in between. Players must be of division ageby December 31, 2011, and may not play in an olderdivision.registering for a tournamentUnless otherwise noted, all Colorado sanctioned events utilizeTennisLink, the USTA's online registration system. Use the TennisLinknumber provided in this publication for easy reference.it’s time to playPicking the events you want is very similar to picking outproducts at the store. You probably have four or five similarproducts to choose from. Do you rely on price, quality orsome other factor? Maybe you're willing to pay more for aproduct that lasts longer than others you've tried. Essentially, try looking for tournaments that will provide you with thebest value for your dollar. But just as important to consider is your present state of fitness—youmay want to enter an event that offers less matchplay if you are “getting your feet wet” for the first time.We hope you have found this guide useful. the10The 10 Things every junior tournament player should know1getting "help" at coloradotennis.com:Not to be biased, but our search features are infinitely simpler and more accurate than the USTA's TennisLink.Hit COLORADOTENNIS.com and use the “Helpful Links” drop-down menu. Click “Find a Tourney”. You cansearch by tournament name, or division. You can also look for tournaments in progress, those open for registrationand completed tournaments. And finding the tournament site has never been easier. Click “Find aCourt”, type in the name of the facility and voila. It's like having an EASY button.2verify all tournament information onlinePlayers are encouraged to verify all tournament information online. The information provided in the 2010 BigBook is accurate at the time of publication, but is not complete. Get draw times, weather announcements, schedule changes, directions, etc. You will find other important information online as well, like what time theplayer party starts and what size t-shirt you can order. It is the players’ responsibility to obtain and verify allmatch times. Check the event's online listing two days prior to the start of the event, or verify with tournamentstaff.3keep your information current with the ustaIn addition to ensuring that you'll receive your Big Book and other vital Colorado Tennis publications, keepingthe USTA up to date on your contact info is very helpful to tournament directors in case they need to reachyou for any reason during an event (Rain Delay, Default, etc.)JUNIORS4checking your standingYou're not vain, you just want to see where you stand in your division. Just go to COLORADOTENNIS.comand use the "Helpful Links" menu to access division standings.5seeding/formatsSeedings for Colorado events reflect the most current published Standing Lists. If Joe Smith is #1 in Boy's16 singles, he will be seeded #1 in that event. Also, please note that a tournament director and/or committeecan alter the schedule or scoring format due to inclement weather or size of the tournament.6CHECKING INPlease plan to arrive at your tournament site at least 15 minutes prior to your first match. This can help ingetting matches on earlier if courts are available and is very much appreciated by tournament staff.7warming up on tournament dayNot many events boast open courts during the tournament, so any warm-up prior to a match should be doneat a different location. Use the Court Locator at COLORADOTENNIS.com to find public courts near the siteto warm-up prior to your match.8COME PREPARED with the essentialsDon’t assume all sites have water on the courts. Come prepared with plenty of fresh water, a hat and sunscreen, especially for those hot summertime matches. Players of all levels should come prepared to everymatch with at least two freshly strung tennis racquets.9RESOLVING JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS/TOURNAMENT SCHEDULING CONFLICTSJunior Team Tennis and tournament play are great companions, and young players are encouraged to doboth. Any Junior Team Tennis players who discovers scheduling conflicts with a local tournament shouldcontact the Tournament Director immediately. Tournament Directors are required to accommodate the playerif the match falls on a Monday during the Junior Team Tennis league season.102011 RULE CHANGEA rule change to USTA Regulations (Table 10) now mandates a 3-minute rest period before a Match Tiebreakin lieu of a 3rd set being played (coaching now allowed as it is an authorized rest period). In a best two ofthree set match (third set played out), Table 10 also now mandates a 10-minute rest period for BG12-18divisions between the second and third set.TOURNAMENTSCHEDULEcoloradotennis.com2011 big book of colorado tennis49

adultsenior/ntrp/championship/family TOURNAMENTSCHEDULEthe10ADULTSThe 10 Things every adult tournament player should know1getting "help" at coloradotennis.com:Not to be biased, but our search features are infinitely simpler and more accurate than the USTA's TennisLink.Hit COLORADOTENNIS.com and use the “Helpful Links” drop-down menu. Check the event's online listing two days prior to the start of the event, or verify with tournamentstaff.3keep your information current with the ustaIn addition to ensuring that you'll receive your Big Book and other vital Colorado Tennis publications, keepingthe USTA up to date on your contact info is very helpful to tournament directors in case they need to reachyou for any reason during an event (Rain Delay, Default, etc.)4checking your standingYou're not vain, you just want to see where you stand in your division. Just go to COLORADOTENNIS.comand use the "Helpful Links" menu to access division standings.5seeding/formatsSeedings for Colorado events reflect the most current published Standing Lists. If Joe Smith is #1 in Men’s4.0 singles, he will be seeded #1 in that event. Players of all levels should come prepared to everymatch with at least two freshly strung tennis racquets.9hey, that kid isn't old enough to play ntrp!Any player who is 18 years-old, but will be turning 19 by December 31, 2011, is eligible to participate inAdult NTRP events. But there's a catch for 18s who want to register for an event: TennisLink is not set up toaccommodate you, so you must contact the tournament director to register for the event. They will happilyenter you into the draw.10by the bookThe USTA has recently announced several changes to the Code, USTA Rules & Regulations, etc. Playersshould keep a copy of the most recent Friend At Court with them, or know of any recent rule changes. Thereis a summary at the beginning of the 2011 Friend At Court which can act as a quick reference guide to playerswho want to be up to speed on the recent changes/additions.
