Loading and Practical Tipsfor the Flint Lock RifleNever prime your flint lock until you are ready to fire it. Your flint lockshould remain unprimed (absent of any priming powder in the pan) untilthe instant before firing. After you prime your flint lock, your full concentrationshould be on the target and the act of firing. FAILURE TO FOL-LOW THIS RULE CAN RESULT IN AN ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGEWHICH MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY AND/OR DEATH TO THESHOOTER OR BYSTANDERS AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY.T/C recommends that you carry the flint lock with the touchhole pickinserted into the touchhole, the pan empty, the frizzen closed, and the hammerat half cock. Tying a thong to the touchhole pick and attaching it to the triggerguard will prevent its loss.Use TouchHole Pickafter each shot to helpassure reliable ignition.Many pioneers and frontiersmen often used a feather this way; insertingthe quill into the touch hole, with the frizzen closed, holding it in place. Whenit was time to prime, they opened the frizzen, pulled the quill and primed thepan. Fill one-half the pan with FFFFG (4F) black powder.Flint Installation - Reliable ignition of any flint lock is of utmost importance.Many variables affect a flint lock’s ignition and need to be addressed toprovide reliable ignition.
