Understanding The VariousRifle Trigger MechanismsThis section applies to T/C rifles only. It does not apply to the Patriot Pistolwith double set triggers which operate differently. For information on thePatriot Pistol, see the section in this manual pertaining to the Patriot Pistol.Depending upon the model, Thompson/Center muzzleloading rifles areequipped with two different types of trigger mechanisms (Single Trigger orDouble Set Triggers). Single trigger models are non adjustable and require littleexplanation. With these models, the rifle is fired simply by placing the hammerin full-cock position and squeezing the trigger.Double set trigger models will function either as “double-set” or “singlestage”. In other words, you need not set the rear trigger to fire the rifle. Therifle will fire simply by pulling the hammer to full-cock position and squeezingthe front (firing) trigger. Always use the trigger in this “single stage” mannerwhen hunting game. The purpose of the set (rear) trigger is to decrease the amount of creep inthe front trigger and to lighten trigger pull when the rifle is being firedfrom a rest position and at a stationary target. Always be certain that therifle is in a rest position with the muzzle on target before you set the trigger. When ready, squeeze the rear trigger hard until an audible “click” isheard. The front trigger will now have a very light trigger pull so beextremely careful. The use of this device is optional and it should be usedwith discretion and common sense. Use the set trigger only when shootingfrom a bench at a stationary target. Never set the triggers while huntingor shooting off-hand. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE RULES MAYCAUSE AN ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE, RESULTING IN INJURYAND/OR DEATH TO THE SHOOTER OR BYSTANDERS AND DAM-AGE TO PROPERTY.ADJUSTMENT OF THE SET TRIGGERThe adjustment screw located in front of the rear trigger controls theamount of set trigger engagement. This adjustment screw has no affect onsingle stage trigger pull! Single stage trigger pull is non-adjustable.The set triggers on T/C rifles are adjusted to our production standard beforeshipment. Triggers are adjusted to what we feel is an optimum let-off travel. In order to check the adjustment for let-off travel, the following procedureshould be used: With the rifle uncharged and unprimed, place the hammer27
