When purchasing Black Powder be certain that it is in the original manufacturer’scontainer and that its granulation or type is clearly marked on thelabel. Follow the storage and handling precautions which are on the label. Ifyou have any questions concerning the safe handling or storage of BlackPowder, write to the manufacturer of the powder. Additional information onpowder storage is available from the National Fire Protection Association,P.O. Box 9146, Quincy, Mass. 02269. Or call 1-800-344-3555. Ask for pamphlet#495.This instructional booklet lists a range of Black Powder loads which areproper for your Thompson/Center firearm. Use only the granulation ofBlack Powder that is listed for your specific caliber and model. You will notethat a series of charges are shown in each instance. The lightest chargeshown for your firearm is the starting load. The heaviest charge listed is themaximum load. Start with the lightest load and work upwards graduallyuntil you reach your best performing load. You will find that the bestshooting load is well below the maximum charge listed.Never exceed the maximum load listed for your particular firearm. OVER-LOADS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE FIREARM AND INJURYAND/OR DEATH TO THE SHOOTER OR BYSTANDERS AND DAM-AGE TO PROPERTY.Pyrodex is a propellant powder designed for use in muzzleloading caplock rifles, pistols and shotguns. Pyrodex is not a Black Powder. In accordancewith the manufacturer’s instructions, Pyrodex relates closely to Black Powderon a volume to volume basis (not weight of charge). In other words, a blackpowder measure set to dispense 70 grains of black powder will, in fact, dispenseapproximately 52 grains of Pyrodex (by weight). However, this lightercharge of Pyrodex will provide a charge which is ballistically similar to 70grains of Black Powder. For all practical purposes, knowing the actualweight of a charge of Pyrodex may be informative, but not necessary. Yourblack powder measure will dictate the proper amount by its graduationsaccording to volume. If you want to know the actual comparative weight of aPyrodex charge, contact the manufacturer, Hodgdon Powder Co. Inc.,Shawnee Mission, KS. 66201.Pyrodex does not ignite as easily as Black Powder and, consequently, it isnot recommended for use in flint lock firearms. Flint locks require strong, positiveignition and should be charged and primed with Black Powder of the appropriategranulation only.14
