<strong>Child</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Check</strong>-<strong>Up</strong> Coverage and Limitations Handbook<strong>Health</strong> Education, Anticipatory GuidanceDescription<strong>Health</strong> education consists of informing the child and the parent or caregiverabout the benefits of healthy lifestyles and practices, and how to preventaccidents and diseases. It also includes anticipatory guidance to explainmisconceptions, introduce new information, and reinforce what the family isdoing well.RequiredEffective October16, 2003The provider must provide age appropriate health education includinganticipatory guidance to all children and their parents or caregivers anddocument in the child’s medical record that health education was provided.Providers must also provide age-appropriate health education regarding smokingand smoking cessation.RecommendedEffective October16, 2003In addition to general health education including anticipatory guidance, thefollowing are recommended as appropriate for age and health history:• For children from 6 months to 72 months of age regardless of the risk forlead poisoning, give detailed lead poisoning prevention counseling includingways to reduce lead exposure through nutrition, personal hygiene, andhousehold hygiene.• For the school-age children, address behavioral risk on topics such assmoking, substance abuse, sexual activity as appropriate, andabsenteeism.• Address injury prevention such as use of car seats, seat belts, bikehelmets, and water safety.• Provide guidance on violence prevention including counseling on conflictresolution, negotiation and dealing with anger constructively.• Counsel on sun protection.• Counsel on STDs and HIV.• Counsel on sleep positioning.• Counsel on nutrition.• Counsel on the importance of physical activity.Note: Bright Futures Anticipatory Guidelines is available atwww.brightfutures.org; see the AAP website at www.aap.org.RequiredFrequencyThe provider must provide and document health education including anticipatoryguidance at each <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Check</strong>-<strong>Up</strong>.2-18 October 2003
