The following tests arerecommended by the Committee on Practice and Ambulatory Medicine’s“Recommendations for Preventive Pediatric <strong>Health</strong> Care”:• Hematocrit or Hemoglobin• Pap smear• Serum cholesterol screening• Sexually transmitted disease screening• Sickle cell test• Tuberculin (TB) skin testing• Urinalysis• Other tests, as indicated, such as stool for ova and parasitesNote: See Appendix D “Recommendations for Preventive Pediatric <strong>Health</strong>Care.”ContraindicatedTestsIf any laboratory tests or analyses are medically contraindicated at the time ofscreening, the provider should postpone it until the test is no longer medicallycontraindicated.Hematocrit orHemoglobin TestHematocrit or hemoglobin tests are recommended at the following ages withresults documented in the child’s medical record:• 9 months• 15 months*• 13 years* Recommended for children at risk.All menstruating adolescents should be screened annually. Other childrenshould be tested when medically indicated.Required BloodLead TestingFederal regulation requires that all children receive a screening blood lead testat:• 12 months of age; and at• 24 months of age; and• <strong>Child</strong>ren between the ages of 36 and 72 months who have not beenpreviously screened for lead poisoning.October 2003 2-13
