Main StreetEl CajonOpen 7 Days 11 amReview by James ColtHarrisonMadonna’s new filmW.E., which she directed, intertwinesthe story of the greatest romanceof the 20th century, and a modern girl’s infatuationwith it. Wally Winthrop (AbbyCornish) is a lonely New Yorkerwho is obsessed with the lovestory and how it influenced theworld. She is having an embryonicaffair with Russian Evgeni(Oscar Isaac). She researchesthe story of King Edward VIII’sabdication of the throne for adivorced woman he loved, anAmerican commoner namedWallis Simpson from Baltimore,Maryland. One misconception is thisfilm is the only story of theKing and Simpson, but it’snot. So it becomes confusingat the beginning becauseit’s not apparent who thecharacter Wally really is. Isshe Mrs. Simpson as a youngwoman, or is she a characterwho is impersonating her? With Madonna responsible— AT THE MOVIES —‘W.E.’ – she took away the British throneW.E.Studio: The Weinstein CompanyGazette Grade: C+MPAA: “R” for some domestic violence, nudity, and languageWho Should Go: Those who like British scandals.$2 .00 FREEANY ORDER OF $ 10 .00OR MOREDRY CLEANING— OR —ALTERATIONSAlterations& Repairsfor the script along withAlek Keshishian, the credit, and blame, must be puton her as sometimes thestory is muddled and totallyconfusing. Intertwining thetwo stories of young WallyWinthrop and Wallis Simpsonand the King takes a bit ofgetting used to and sorting outthe details is a bit daunting. But once you figure out who iswhom, it’s kind of a revelationto realize who the charactersare and how they connect.Naturally the “romanceof the century” is easy tofollow as it has taken on theaura of a myth by now. In1936, King Edward gave upthe throne for “the woman Ilove,” and astonished millionsaround the world. Brits werealmost apoplectic, and theRoyal Family was aghast. Not only was Mrs. Simpsona “commoner,” but she wasan American (horrors!) anddivorced three times. With no King to his title,Edward and Wallis becamethe Duke and Duchess ofAndrea Riseborough and James D’Arcy star in W. E. Photo Credit: The Weinstein CompanyWindsor forevermore. In theirdisgrace, they soon becamethe toast of Europe and thenAmerica – two prize guestsat any party and were thejewels in society that openlywelcomed them. The RoyalFamily, of course, dealt withthem with a ten-foot pole, and would only invite themto Buckingham Palace on rareoccasions.Andrea Riseborough playsSimpson as though she wereSimpson herself. She’s a deadringerfor the woman whonearly caused the downfall ofthe British Empire. She’s verychic as was Mrs. Simpson, and she even captures thoserare humorous moments withrestraint and dignity. JamesD’Arcy plays the formermonarch a little more sprightlythan one would ever imaginehe was. In his photos healways looked rather dour, butin the film he seems to havecome alive and became alively and humorous human. Not that he was like the beerswillingguy next door, but hedid have his warm moments. The best parts of W.E. arethe flashbacks to the 1930swith some use of vintage film,Fashion Cleaners& Alterations$3 .00 FREEANY ORDER OF $ 15 .00OR MOREDRY CLEANING— OR —ALTERATIONS312 Broadway, El Cajon(In the Target Shopping Mall)(619) 579-0532$5 .00 FREEANY ORDER OF $ 20 .00OR MOREDRY CLEANING— OR —ALTERATIONSplus the newly filmed scenesthat capture the flair and styleof the era. Being a suckerfor more or less scandalousstories, the film pleased thisreviewer to no end to seeyet another version of thepampered lives of Wallis andEdward.Madonna may be justgetting her directing wings, and it may take a few morefilms before she really knowswhat she’s doing. The filmis not bad, but it looks likeit needs a little polishingand a little guidance for thedirector.St. Patrick’s DayAs the nation celebratesthis St. Patrick’s Dayon March 17 with frothy pintsof Guinness, many will raiseglasses to recognize the hallowedpatron saint of Ireland(who is actually British!).While those glasses areraised, consider cheering afew other Irishmen who madecontributions to the world. Didyou know an Irishman, JohnPhilip Holland, invented thesubmarine? Color photographywas invented by Ireland’s JohnJoly. And guided missiles, themodern tractor, and even acure for Leprosy were all inventedby Irishmen. So as you search for that elusivefour leaf clover, rememberthat Ireland has given us muchmore than just good beer!
