466 CAMPING AND WOODCRAFTtwo or three days old, where both eyes were swelledshut and other parts correspondingly affected, withapplications of the tincture of grindelia. But whatacts as a specific in many instances may do littlegood in another. Edward Cave recommends "boilinga dime's worth of cardamon seeds (capsuleswith seeds in them) in a pint of water, for a badcase, and applying the 'tea' thus made as a lotionwhen cold. The more frequent the application thequicker the remedy." Another cure, that is highlypraised by J. S. McGehee, is three parts olive oiland one part carbolic acid. If this does notredden the skin a little, he adds more of theacid, very gradually, testing until ft "nips." Twoapplications, eight or ten hours apart, generallycure. This, of course, would not be safe to useover a large surface.Foreign Body in the Eye.—As I do most ofmy roaming alone, I usually have in my pocket atiny mirror with which to help myself if a "redpepper" gnat flies into my eye, or something elseof the sort happens, when I am miles from help.If a foreign body lodges beneath the lower eyelid, there is little or no pain; but if beneath the upperlid, or if embedded in the eyeball, a man is quiteout of action until the thing is removed. If theoffender cannot be seen, it is probably under theupper lid. When a man is alone, the best he cando in such a case is to pull the upper lid over thelower and hold it so until the tears have a chanceto wash the irritating particle away. Close thenostril on the other side, and blow your nose hard.Do not rub the eye, for that might embed the thing. In examining another person's eye, first havehim look up while you press the lower lid down.If the particle is under the upper lid, have himsit down with head bent backward. Stand behindhim, place a match across the upper lid half aninch from its edge, and turn the lid up and backover the match.
