While one person is doing this,another must keep up the rubbing <strong>and</strong> massage."Instances are on record of recovery after severalhours of suspended animation,"Chilblains.— If unbroken, rub lightly withdiluted alcohol, whiskey, or alum water. If broken,apply boric acid or an ointment. The Red Crosstreatment is: 'Taint every two or three days withtincture of iodine pure or diluted with alcohol.Several coats of collodion at intervals of a fe^vdays are also good, as the collodion exerts considerablepressure on the dilated blood-vessels."Corns.— "Hard corns should never be cut, butshould be rubbed down smooth with s<strong>and</strong>paper afterwashing the skin. They should then be coveredwith a corn plaster or a piece of adhesive plaster.Cutting a corn, if you get below the hard skin, islikely to prove very dangerous, as it often resultsin blood-poisoning."Soft corns should be treated by careful washing<strong>and</strong> drjang of the foot, especially between the toes,then dusting in a little talcum powder <strong>and</strong> keepingthe toes separated by a small piece of gauze."{Red Cross.)Ingrowing Toe-nail.—Toe-nails should alwaysbe cut straight across; rounding off the cornersis one great cause of the <strong>com</strong>plaint. A pieceof tinfoil, doubled or trebled, may be inserted betweenthe granulations <strong>and</strong> the nail <strong>and</strong> all keptdusted with boric acid.Chafing, Blisters.—See Page 140.Boils.—These <strong>com</strong>e from infection of the hairfollicles. Hot antiseptic poultices will help drawthe boil to a head. I am aware that the practiceof poulticing boils <strong>and</strong> felons Is discredited by manyauthorities; but this, I think, is chiefly due to thefact that a poultice as <strong>com</strong>monly made is an Ideal
