KNOTS, HITCHES, LASHINGS 283your left hand, the post being next to you, and theend of the rope in your right hand ; lay the endover the standing part and make an overhand knotas if you were going to make a reef knot; then bya tvvist, capsize the knot so that it becomes a halfhitch in the standing part. Now pass the endbehind and around the standing part, away fromthe post, and back down through the same halfhitch. Then pull tight.FiSHERMAN^s Eye Knot (Fig.1 32).—A bightis first made, and an overhand knot is tied withthe standing part around the other as in Fig. 135;the end is now passed round the standing part, andknotted in the same way. Thus there is a runningknot a followed by a check knot h, which, when the loop is hauled on, jam tight against oneanother. The strain is divided equally between thetwo knots, and the loop will stand until the lineparts. This is one of the best ways to make aneye on a fishing line or gut.Loop Knot (Fig. 133).—Shown in the illustrationas formed before drawing taut, which isdone by pulling on the end with one hand and onleft-hand side of loop with the other. Jams fast, but is not so strong as 131, 132, or 134.Central Draught Loop (Fig. 134).—Anotherexcellent loop for lines or gut, as it will not givenor cut itself. Make the bight a, then h over it,and pass the end d under the standing part; thenthread d through the opening c, over the standingpart, and out between the bights a and h. Nowdraw the bight h under and through the bight a,in the direction of the arrow. Haul taut by pullingon e and d.Slip Knots.—A plain slipknot or running knotis made by first forming a bight and then tying acommon overhand knot with the end around thestanding part (Fig. 135). It is a common knotfor forming a noose, but inferior to the runningbowline (Fig. 140).
